March 11, 2018 St. Paul Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (E.L.C.A.). It is referred to as “Borchers” since Rev. Henry Borchers, who served our congregation from 1857-1881, advised and influenced a small group of pioneer settlers that wanted to establish a congregation in the area. This year we celebrate 166 years of life and ministry in this beautiful country setting in Southern Indiana. We look forward to many more years of growth and change as we seek continually to be faithful to God’s call to mission.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion is

offered at the 8:00 a.m. services on the 2nd and 4th Sundays and at the 10:15 a.m. service on the 1st and the 3rd Sundays of the month. Christians who believe in the true presence of Christ in the bread and wine for our forgiveness and salvation are invited to receive Holy Communion.

Sunday School classes are held each Sunday for all ages at 9:10 a.m. Visitors are welcome to attend.

HEARING ASSISTANCE: We have

head phones available for those in need of assistance with hearing. They are located on the table at the entrance of the sanctuary. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS—There

Questions To Ponder: 1— How does Jesus treat the Sabbath? 2— What do you think about Jesus continually breaking established Sabbath laws? 3— How do these texts relate to our ‘Blue Laws’ in our society today? 4—How does Jesus’ dealings with Sabbath shape how you live out the idea of the Sabbath in your daily life? 5—How do these texts speak to you today?

Prayer: Creator God, you established the Sabbath as a gift for humanity. Help us to not turn your gift into a law and a task to complete. May this gift be refreshing and rejuvenating for us. Amen.

This week’s Bible story is

The Light Lent 4 of the World

from John 3:14-21.

Jesus is the light of the whole world—that means everyone!

Ask each other what you remember about: • Nicodemus • Questions • Light • Everyone In Jesus’s time, people anointed bodies with oils and herbs before they buried them. When Jesus was buried, Nicodemus used lots of oils and spices—over 75 pounds!

Read the whole story together in the Bible! Spark Story Bible pages 416-419 Spark Bible page 1174

Family Prayer Dear God, as children of your light, you show us the way when we get lost. Help us be a light to other people: our family, our friends, our neighbors, and the whole world. Amen.

Family Conversations 1 How do you think Nicodemus felt when he talked to Jesus?

2

What’s the hardest question someone has ever asked you? What’s the hardest question you’ve ever wanted to ask?

3

If you could meet Jesus, what would you ask him? Write your question on a sticky note. Ask others in your family to write their questions on sticky notes. Make a question mark out of all the notes.

4

Are you good at asking questions? Did you know there are different kinds of questions to ask? For example, there are true/ false questions, yes/no questions, multiple choice questions, and open-ended questions. What type of questions do you like to ask? What type of questions do you think Jesus liked to answer?

Eye Spark Whenever you turn on a light switch, remember that Jesus is the light of the world!

Ear Spark When you hear someone ask a hard question, think about how Jesus would answer. Lectionary, The Light of the World Family Page. SparkTM Sunday School © 2011 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved. May be reproduced for local use provided every copy carries this notice.

live IT For families to do together Make a list of all the people that you ask questions of. Then make a list of all the people who ask you questions. Talk about how asking questions is a great way to show you are curious and care about someone.

For younger kids Walk around your home or church and point out all the things that give off light. What’s the brightest thing in your home or church? Which would you take with you if you were going camping? Driving a car at night?

For older kids Word about Jesus spread fast when he was alive. Nicodemus wasn’t the only one who asked Jesus questions. Use an online Bible tool to look up Matthew 9:11, Matthew 19:3, Mark 2:24, and Mark 12:14.
