September 11, 2016 St. Paul Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (E.L.C.A.). It is referred to as “Borchers” since Rev. Henry Borchers, who served our congregation from 1857-1881, advised and influenced a small group of pioneer settlers that wanted to establish a congregation in the area. This year we celebrate 162 years of life and ministry in this beautiful country setting in Southern Indiana. We look forward to many more years of growth and change as we seek continually to be faithful to God’s call to mission.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion is

offered at the 8:00 a.m. services on the 2nd and 4th Sundays and at the 10:15 a.m. service on the 1st and the 3rd Sundays of the month. Christians who believe in the true presence of Christ in the bread and wine for our forgiveness and salvation are invited to receive Holy Communion.

Sunday School classes are held each Sunday for all ages at 9:10 a.m. Visitors are welcome to attend.

HEARING ASSISTANCE: We have

head phones available for those in need of assistance with hearing. They are located on the table at the entrance of the sanctuary. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS—There

NOTES:

Readings for the Day:

Exodus 32:7-14: While Moses is on Mount Sinai, the people grow restless and make a golden calf to worship. Today’s reading shows Moses as the mediator between an angry God and a sinful people. Moses reminds God that the Israelites are God’s own people and boldly asks mercy for them.

I Timothy 1:12-17: The letters to Timothy are called the Pastoral Epistles because they contain advice especially intended for leaders in the church. Here the mercy shown to Paul, who once persecuted the church, is cited as evidence that even the most unworthy may become witness to the grace of God.

Luke 15:1-10: Jesus tells two stories that suggest a curious connection between the lost being found and sinners, each of whom is so precious to God that his or her recovery brings joy in heaven.

Questions To Ponder: 1— Why are the Pharisees and scribes grumbling? 2— What is surprising about these parables that Jesus tells? 3— Do you think that the tax collectors and sinners would have heard these parables differently than the Pharisees? Why or why not? 4— What do these parables tell us about Jesus? 5—How do these texts speak to you today?

Prayer: Lord Christ, you are the Good Shepherd who searches and searches for the lost. We give thanks that you never give up and faithful search until you find all the lost. Amen.
