2017

From the Pastor’s Desk (2017 is the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, during this year, I am going to be using a series of articles that the ELCA produced so that people might have a greater understanding of the Reformation, the history, and the impact it has had over the years.)

Martin Luther’s German Bible What version of the Bible do you hear and read? Just in English, we have many to choose from. They range from translations that aim to be as accurate as possible (such as the New Revised Standard Version) to others whose main objective is to be easy to understand, even if certain details get lost. Imagine, though, if there were no Bible available in English—if such a thing didn’t exist. What if the only Bible was in a language most didn’t know and we had to rely on priests and scholars to tell us what was in the Bible? That was the situation in the Germany of Martin Luther’s time. The Bible was most commonly found in Latin, though scholars could read it in the original languages of Hebrew and Greek. An important part of Luther’s reforms was recognizing that a German Bible was needed—and then actually creating it! Sometimes things happen because it’s the right time, and that seems to be the case with Luther’s Bible. Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of printing with movable type had come along a few decades earlier and was coming into widespread use. Luther recognized the need to provide a Bible that ordinary, literate people could read. The many dialects of the German people were beginning to coalesce into a form that was widely understandable. Luther even had an artist friend, Lucas Cranach, who could provide illustrations for the Bible, aiding people’s understanding. And finally, Luther had the time to devote to the project. The dispute with the Roman Catholic hierarchy that had begun with indulgences and Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses had expanded and now came to a head with the imperial council (or “diet”) held at Worms. Luther strongly defended his writings but still was condemned as an outlaw (in addition to already being named a heretic). He could have been arrested and executed, but his prince, Frederick the Wise, “kidnapped” him in April 1521 and hid him away in the Wartburg Castle. There the reformer had little to do, so he set out to begin his translation of the Bible. He started with the New Testament. He had learned New Testament (koine) Greek, the original language, and so began with that, not Latin. Since the German language was still evolving, Luther would make trips into nearby towns to hear how people actually spoke. Luther returned to his home in Wittenberg in 1522, and within six months, his New Testament was published. After that he worked with other pastors and scholars to prepare the Old Testament. The complete Bible, with 117 woodcut illustrations, was first published in 1534. He revised it several times up until his death. Luther’s work on a German Bible was a landmark achievement. It influenced others in many countries, including England, to do the same. He brought the scriptures into the language of his people, and in so doing spread the gospel.

Upcoming Worship Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sundays. Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon them in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

March 5th:

Text— Matthew 4:1-11

Today's gospel tells of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. His forty-day fast becomes the basis of our Lenten pilgrimage. In the early church Lent was a time of intense preparation for those to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. This catechetical focus on the meaning of faith is at the heart of our Lenten journey to the baptismal waters of Easter. Hungry for God’s mercy, we receive the bread of life to nourish us for the days ahead.

March 12th:

Text— John 3:1-17

During Lent we journey with all those around the world who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. In today’s gospel Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born of water and Spirit. At the font we are given a new birth as daughters and sons of God. As God made a covenant with Abraham, in baptism God promises to raise us up with Christ to new life. From worship we are sent forth to proclaim God’s love for all the world.

March 19th:

Text— John 4:5-42

In today’s gospel the Samaritan woman asks Jesus for water, an image of our thirst for God. Jesus offers living water, a sign of God’s grace flowing from the waters of baptism. The early church used this gospel and those of the next two Sundays to deepen baptismal reflection during the final days of preparation before baptism at Easter. As we journey to the resurrection feast, Christ comes among us in word, bath, and meal—offering us the life-giving water of God’s mercy and forgiveness. March 26th:

Text— John 9:1-41

Baptism is sometimes called enlightenment. The gospel for this Sunday is the story of the man born blind healed by Christ. I was blind, but now I see, declares the man. In baptism God opens our eyes to see the truth of who we are: God’s beloved sons and daughters. As David was anointed king of Israel, in baptism God anoints our head with oil, and calls us to bear witness to the light of Christ in our daily lives.

Lenten Services

The celebration of First Communion will be during the Maundy Thursday Service on April 13.

During the Season of Lent, we will be offering Wednesday Night services.

Any questions, please talk with Pastor Steve. The first Wednesday service:

March 1

Communion During Lent

Ash Wednesday worship at 7:00 p.m.

The season of Lent is a time of reflection upon the suffering of Jesus. Lent is also a time of preparation to celebrate Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Receiving Holy Communion is a great way to help us to focus upon Jesus’ sacrifice and His work upon the cross.

The service will include the imposition of ashes and holy communion.

The rest of the Wednesday night services will be brief (lasting about a half hour) with hymns and a short message focusing upon The Small Catechism.

By offering Holy Communion more often is a way of seeking to live out one of our core values which is spirituality. Hence, we will offer Holy Communion at both services during the entire season of Lent.

We are using the Small Catechism as our focus as part of an ongoing remembrance of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. The hope is that this focus upon the small catechism, a book Martin Luther wrote as a teaching tool of the faith, will help us see the significance and ongoing relevance of what happened 500 years ago. These services will begin at 7:00 PM. We are not having meals before the service. 

March 8: Ten Commandments

March 15: Apostles’ Creed

March 22: Lord’s Prayer

Thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Phi Beta Phi Cancer Dance Queen Contest. I raised a total of $750 with my cans placed at church and throughout the community. My personal goal was to raise around $400, so I definitely surpassed that!! Even though I didn't win, I was pleased to help raise funds for cancer research, since that has touched my own family. St. Paul Borchers Care Team MISSION CARE/ COMMUNITY CARE: It’s amazing, how

one person’s

act of kindness can change the course of your life. Today, follow their lead. . .

Pay It Forward!! Do you remember how St. Paul-Borchers benefitted last May from United Way’s Day of Caring? So many projects were completed in the Picnic Grove and at Borchers Chapel!! More was accomplished in one Saturday than would have been completed by us all summer because United Way provided a group of volunteers who devoted themselves solely to St. Paul’s projects for an entire day. And the volunteers ENJOYED THEMSELVES while they worked!

On the Welcome Center is a handy, red, pocket or purse-sized list of general items needed for Lutheran World Relief kits. Springtime means an extra PUSH to collect items in preparation for shipping to LWR regional headquarters. Why not pick up a list and take advantage of sale items you come across? Donations are collected in the wooden box near the kitchen. Items most needed at this time include:  lightweight bath towels  4 ounce bars of soap  metal nail clippers  toothbrushes  #2 pencils Please note- A bag of #2 pencils intended for use in LWR kits is missing! If you know of its mysterious whereabouts, please let Jan Otte or Michelle know.

LET’S DO IT !!!

A loyal group of blanket-makers has been constructing and sewing together colorful quilts from donated fabrics, and other gentlyused materials. Other volunteers have been faithfully tying, or knotting the quilts to ensure their durability. These lovely quilts will be sent to Lutheran World Relief, where they will be distributed world-wide to families in crisis situations.

All skill levels are needed. Sign up at the Welcome Center if you are ready to share with others what our congregation has to offer!

VOLUNTEERS WITH SEWING MACHINES NEEDED

This year St. Paul-Borchers has a chance to “pay it forward” by forming our own team of volunteers to complete projects for others.

FOOD PANTRY

Are you able to sew a basic zigzag stitch on a sewing machine?

peanut butter and jelly

Are you willing to give a little time to make cloth diapers from old T-shirts?

Please place your donations in the wooden box in the hallway near the kitchen, or in the basket near the main entry doors. Donations are given to food pantries at Provisions, Anchor House, and Turning Point.

All materials can be provided! Diapers will be given to needy families through Lutheran World Relief. Instructions and a sample diaper can be found on the Welcome Center. Please talk to Jan Otte or Trish Tangman if you are willing to help. 7

St. Paul Borchers Care Team FRIENDLY CARE:

SENIOR CARE: Think Spring!

Spring is a great time to get out and do something fun after we’ve hibernated for many weeks!

”The Shack” a movie!! Many folks read The Shack , which was a wildly popular book a few years ago. Several people even participated in The Shack book study that was held at St. Paul.

Trish is planning 2017 Senior Outings that promise to take in some interesting sights and locations. If you have ideas for outings, please let Trish know!

There will be a movie based on the book released in theaters in early March. Trailers are available online!

Borchers Breakfast Club

Plans are underway to attend the movie as a group and meet afterwards to discuss our impressions of the movie.

Borchers Breakfast Club (BBC) meets every Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 for breakfast, activities, and social time. YOU are welcome to join the group just for breakfast, or for the entire morning.

Watch upcoming bulletins for more information!

Praying in Color

begins on Ash Wednesday March 1 6:00-6:45 p.m.

Borchers Devotions at 8:30 a.m. in the sanctuary

This year during Lent an opportunity is offered to do something different in terms of reflection and drawing nearer to God. We will explore Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God, a book by Sybil MacBeth.

Everyone from the congregation and the community is invited to attend the brief services held on the first Thursday of each month. Start your day off with an encouraging message from Pastor Steve!

This method of prayer which is especially helpful for people who can’t seem to sit still long enough to get past the “Our Father” or “Hello God” step, or for people who are just in need of a spark in their stagnant prayer life.

You’re also invited to the Fellowship Room after the services for a hearty breakfast, compliments of Borchers Breakfast Club.

Although this prayer method does involve using colored pencils or crayons, ABSOLUTELY NO ARTISTIC ABILITY IS NEEDED!

THANK YOU  THANK YOU  THANK YOU

If this sounds interesting to you, join us in the Adult Sunday School room on Wednesdays from March 1st through April 5th, from 6:00-6:45 p.m.
