From the Pastor’s Desk

Reformation The last Sunday of October is always the day that we celebrate Reformation Sunday. The Day of Reformation is technically, October 31 of every year—but we celebrate it on the last Sunday of October since the actual day does not always fall on a Sunday. But, what is it? And why do we continue to celebrate it? The book Martin Luther: The Best from All His Works (from the Christian Classics Collection) writes this: What started out as a peaceful challenge to the selling of indulgences initiated one of the greatest religious movements in history. Luther’s ‘Ninety-five Theses’ (posted October 31, 1517 in Wittenberg) indirectly gave rise to Protestantism. The dominance of the Catholic church was for the first time challenged with such force that it couldn’t stop it. In the ‘Ninety-five Theses’ Luther challenged the selling of indulgences by the Catholic church. Luther merely sought a peaceful means to communicate with Catholic authorities, but a great schism resulted, leading to Luther’s excommunication and the beginning of the Reformation. In the Theses, Luther pointed out that, according to canon law, the pope cannot remit penalties upon souls in purgatory. Luther attacked the greed and avarice found in the church, as well as the false teaching that men could buy their way into heaven. Luther ended the Theses by stating that Christ was the only source of salvation from hell, and that all men should cast their hope upon Him. It is no wonder that these and other charges were not taken well by the Catholic authorities. Some may see Reformation as a time to say we were right and others were wrong. However, this is not the proper way to understand Reformation. Rather, the focus and intent of the beginning of the Reformation was to make sure that the gospel message was proclaimed rightly and that Jesus Christ was the center of all that we do. The emphasis upon continuing to celebrate Reformation even almost 500 years later is to remind ourselves to remain centered in the gospel and call ourselves to the importance of the message that we are saved by grace and it is not our own works or effort that brings about salvation. Our prayer on Reformation should be that the Holy Spirit would continue to work in us and lead us in truth and righteousness.

Upcoming Worship Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sundays. Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon them in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship. October 2nd: Text— Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 Paul cited Habakkuk’s call for faith in God’s salvation in both Romans and Galatians, and there it became instrumental in Martin Luther’s theological breakthrough. The passage fits with today’s Lukan passage by calling us to faith. Today is the only citation from Habakkuk in the three-year lectionary. October 9th: Text— Luke 17:11-19 Most Christians have used this narrative as a call for the faithful to give thanks to God. At holy communion today, we do just that. In Lutheran speak, ‘law’ is ordering Christians to be grateful, and ‘gospel’ is proclaiming to the community the healing and saving mercy of God. October 16th: Text— Luke 18:1-8 Believers are called to keep faith in God’s justice. Come, Lord Jesus! The church prays. By contrast with the unjust judge of the parable, the Son of Man will judge us all at the end. Luke’s focus on the needy widow is held next to the depiction of Christ as the judge. October 23rd: Text— Luke 18:9-14 We who assemble on Sunday are both the Pharisee—people who trust that their religious practices are Godpleasing enough—and the tax collector—people who know their own sinfulness and plead for God’s mercy. God responds by justifying the unrighteous. October 30th: Text— Romans 3:19-28 (Reformation Sunday) On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Jesus Christ—the good news—that makes us free! Though we give thanks for the events of the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewal to the church of that time, we pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table.

Ukulele Group Group Practices / Jam Nights Wednesdays October 5 and 19

OCTOBER 30

At 6:00 p.m. we will hold a beginners practice. If you are new to the ukulele and would like help learning to tune your uke, practice strumming and basic chords, please stop by one or both of these practices.

This day celebrates Martin Luther and the other reformers who went against the church of the day to call the church and all Christians back to the core of the gospel message—that we are saved by grace through faith and not of our works.

Around 6:30 p.m. we invite everyone to join us playing our old favorites and learning new songs. Stay as long as you like and have fun playing and relaxing with some ukulele tunes.

As part of this celebration, we are asking people to wear something RED (which is the color of the day). We use red on reformation as a sign of the Spirit— because the reformation is a time when the Holy Spirit blew across the church to bring about renewal within the church.

Any questions, see Michael or Jamie Baker.

FOOD PANTRY Soup

Thanks for your patience while the recycling container was missing!!

Please place your donations in the wooden box in the hallway near the kitchen, or in the basket near the main entry doors. Donations are given to food pantries at Provisions, Anchor House, Human Services, and Turning Point.

Sorry for the inconvenience if you had to carry your recyclables in your vehicle longer than expected. In order to accommodate the parking lot resealing project St. Paul asked Rumpke to completely remove the container. It was returned as quickly as possible. The many inquiries received, asking “What happened to the recycling container?”, remind us what an important community service this recycling container has become!

Birthday Kits

Proposed

Imagine if you can, celebrating your child’s birthday in a homeless shelter. Parents of children living in homeless shelters don’t have the resources needed to give their child even a meager birthday celebration. You can help care for these kids!

The Care Team will be collecting items to be used at birthday celebrations for children temporarily living in a homeless shelter.

Jim Lloyd, a representative of Church Bus, Inc., will bring a church bus to St. Paul so members can experience what an actual vehicle would provide riders. He will be here from approximately 9:00-10:30 a.m. He will answer questions that church members have concerning the vehicle.

You can donate your extra birthday party items like napkins, plates, and cups, etc. for use in “Birthday Kits” that will be given to a local homeless shelter. Kits will include all that’s needed for a modest birthday party! Look for a collection box in the narthex. Items accepted:

SENIOR CARE:

Faith Through The Years

Many seniors at St. Paul-Borchers have shared their favorite bible verses or favorite hymns. A series of brief narratives about how particular verses or hymns have influenced the lives of these members have also been published in newsletters. These “faith stories” are shared with the hope of passing on inspirational thoughts that might inspire others to persevere in their own Christian walks. This month’s faith story was written after an interview with Maude and Virgil Kleffman.

Anyone who knows Virgil and Maude Kleffman would probably agree it’s been on rare occasions anyone can recall seeing one without the other. And the Kleffmans were together as usual for an interview which took place in their home, a few days prior to their 74th wedding anniversary. The main purpose of the interview was to find out what nuggets of wisdom could be gleaned from the Kleffmans about how they have managed to stay grounded in their faith throughout all the trials that come about in life. Maude and Virgil both have early memories of attending weekly church services with their families. Maude’s family worshiped at United Brethren Church in Acme, and Virgil’s family worshiped at St. Paul-Borchers. Maude Reah Anderson and Virgil Bernhard Gottlieb Kleffman were married by Pastor Heidmann on September 12, 1942 at Borchers. The couple remembers an older lady at their wedding who gave them some sound advice, “Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.” Maude and Virgil heeded that advice, taken from Ephesians 4:26, and believe it to be part of the reason they’ve stayed married for 74 years. They also give credit to the fact that every night before going to sleep they have prayed together The Lord’s Prayer. Virgil’s favorite hymn, “On the Road to Jericho”, is one he learned when he and Maude attended United Brethren early in their marriage. From his memory Virgil can still recall the words and the beautiful sound of the hymn played on the church’s old piano. “On the Jericho road there’s only room for two, just Jesus and you….”. On January 1, 1943, only a few months into their marriage, Virgil reported for what would be almost three years of US military service in Europe during World War II. In 1947 Maude and Virgil built a home on the farm where Virgil was raised. They brought up their three children, Connie, Benny, and Ernie in that home and still live there today. The Kleffmans agree that their life together has been very good, but not without trials and temptations which ultimately made them stronger. Virgil says that through the years when they have needed a little guidance in a tough situation, he has read the book of Proverbs. Among the chapters of Proverbs there has usually been an answer.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE:

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?? by Susie Schnitker, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner

Many people aren’t getting enough of this vitamin, dubbed “the sunshine vitamin” to stay healthy. It is difficult to get enough vitamin D from foods alone. Exposure to sunlight is the main source that helps our bodies make and use vitamin D effectively. Signs of vitamin D deficiency can be vague and may include feeling tired and generalized aches and pains. There are two ways to take in vitamin D: exposing bare skin to the sun or by ingestion through foods or vitamin D supplements. Natural food sources containing vitamin D are few and most contain only small amounts, although some foods, such as milk, orange juice and cereals are fortified with vitamin D. I have provided a table with the Recommended Dietary Allowances for men and women listed by ages. The biggest health risk of vitamin D deficiency is osteoporosis, a condition that more than 40 million US adults suffer from. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of the bones that increases risk of bone fractures. Calcium and vitamin D both play a role in prevention of osteoporosis so many times you will see these two supplements taken together. There is also emerging research that is indicating that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention of colon, prostate, and breast cancers but this is preliminary and further research is being conducted to see if there is a correlation. The other population where vitamin D supplement is recommended is for breast fed babies. Infants should get 400 IU’s of vitamin D daily and many breast fed babies don’t get this amount. Infant formulas and cows mild are fortified with vitamin D. If you think you are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, you should see your health care provider and discuss a simple blood test to check your level. 11
