St Michael & All Angels 18 June 2017, Te Pouhere Sunday

He Puanga Haeata– The New Dawn at Parihaka Three years ago, to coincide with the bicentenary of the first preaching of the gospel in Aotearoa, we held a series of evening talks here at St Michael’s exploring bicultural issues. One of those evenings was presented by Sue Corbett’s brother, Rob Ritchie, who spoke on his work regarding reconciliation of descendants of British personnel involved in the invasion of Parihaka. Rob told us a little of the story of Parihaka, (including the invasion on 5 Nov 1881) but spoke mostly of his work with the Parihaka committee, inviting descendants of British personnel to Parihaka to share their stories and work towards reconciliation and forgiveness. He spoke too of the monthly hui that Parihaka hold, to continue to discuss the issues facing them today, and how they can face them in the light of Tohu and Te Whiti’s kaupapa of peace. This week, some three years later, the Crown has just apologised at Parihaka for the historical injustice. Last weekend the people of Parihaka welcomed the Crown’s full apology, delivered by Attorney-General Chris Finalyson, in a reconciliation ceremony at Parihaka. “The sense of grievance that arises from that history is anything but historical,” said Mr Finlayson. “It’s remembered, it’s lived every day, that is why the Crown comes today offering an apology to the people of Parihaka for actions that were committed in its name almost 140 years ago. It’s also important to recognise that the Crown’s response to the challenge of Parihaka deprived the settlement’s residents of fundamental legal rights, which applied as much to them as to any other citizen. The Colonial Government failed to uphold the rule of law at Parihaka, and I am grateful for the opportunity as the current Attorney General to be able to play a part in helping put right what was a grievous wrong.” Descendants of the armed police who sacked Parihaka in 1881 were among those at the ceremony to witness the apology – some of whom were mentioned by Rob in his presentation to us 3 years ago. This momentous settlement paves the way for the work of Tohu and Te Whiti to continue more fully at Parihaka – hence the name of the ceremony being The New Dawn. It is hoped that the work of peace and reconciliation that has always been the heart of Parihaka will continue to flourish, with this apology and reconciliation agreement in place. Tohu and Te Whiti’s message is what lies at the heart of the gospel of peace and reconciliation that we celebrate and remember today, and every Sunday. You can read the Crown’s full apology at https://e-tangata.co.nz/news/parihakahas-waited- a-long- time-for- this-day This is a family church and children are very welcome—please feel free to go in and out as you need to if your child is restless - there are books & toys at the back of the church, and in the foyer. Children’s Time & Believers group meet on the second, third and fourth Sundays of each month during church. Visitors are welcome.

Trafficking/Labour Exploitation Conference 26/27 July Slavery was abolished by Wilberforce years ago, and yet it is a still real issue in our world today. Labour exploitation & people trafficking often remains hidden and involves a range of players from industries to businesses to consumers and people from all walks of life. What can we do? Our Diocese, together with the US Embassy, Stop The Traffik and Stand Against Slavery are presenting this conference at the Cathedral that seeks ways for us to work together to effectively disrupt this crime. By hearing how this is occurring, we will learn what steps are already being taken and what further can be done to bring an end to this within our community. Spaces will be limited, so register early. See movementonline.org.nz/events/tipoftheiceberg/ for more info or contact Chris Frazer on [email protected] or 027 4425065
