ST BRIGID’S HEALTHY EATING GUIDELINES Rationale The purpose of the St Brigid’s Healthy Eating Guidelines is to provide direction to parents/caregivers, teachers and students and the wider school community, including the Parents and Friends Association (P&F), on the promotion and modelling of healthy eating and good nutrition in school and activities relating to food and drink. The school follows the Australian Dietary Guidelines, Eat for Health: Healthy eating for children which is updated regularly. (Australian Government, Australian Dietary Guidelines)

Guiding Principles In the education and formation of students, St Brigid’s School actively promotes the Catholic world view which affirms every individual person as made in the image of God (Gen 1:27). Life and physical health are precious gifts of God. We promote and model healthy eating and good nutrition in school programs and in the school generally. This reinforces the teaching about nutrition that occurs within the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 6. The health of students is relevant to their learning and is important to the school. The present and future health of students can be enhanced by quality learning and positive experiences at school. Developing a ‘Healthy School Community’ is a key priority in preventing childhood obesity. The Australian Dietary Guidelines: Healthy Eating for Children are designed to help students and their families choose food and drink for a healthy life. The Australian Dietary Guidelines categorises healthy food into five groups (including water):  Vegetables, legumes/beans (GREEN)  Fruit (LIGHT GREEN)  Milk, yoghurt, cheese/alternatives (PURPLE)  Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts/seeds, legumes/beans (BLUE) Recommendations for ‘small amounts’ include, oils and butter. ‘Only sometimes foods and in small amounts’ include, soft drinks, fast foods, cakes, biscuits, ice-cream, cream, confectionary, chips, crisps, and processed fruit juices and meats.

Guiding Roles The role of the school:    

The Principal has the discretion to set and implement these guidelines The Principal will encourage all members of the school community to adhere to the guidelines which are consistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines: Healthy eating for children and is responsive to local needs, including cultural diversity. The school will promote ‘Nude Food’ lunch boxes (wrapping free) through the Green Thumb Award The Principal will review these Guidelines annually

The role of the teacher is to:  Teach nutrition education as part of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) key learning area which it is mandated by the NSW Board of Studies for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The teaching and learning and all class activities in all other key learning areas should reinforce healthy eating and good nutrition wherever practicable.  Reward student achievement with stickers/awards rather than confectionary  Model healthy eating habits in front of students  Provide a visual display of Australian Guide to Healthy Eating: Eat for Health & the Food pyramid

The role of the student is to:  Accept the responsibility not to bring confectionary or soft drinks to school  Eat the food their parents provide for their lunch and recess  Not share/swap their food with other students  Take home any food they are unable to eat  Inform parents if they don’t like certain foods  Abstain from eating foods that may adversely affect their health (food allergies/food intolerances) The role of the parent/caregiver is to:  Provide healthy lunch and recess food options  Ensure that food is stored correctly  Provide positive reinforcement, encouragement and guidance  Inform the school if their child is unable to eat certain foods due to allergy/dietary intolerance  Provide nude food lunch boxes (free of wrapping)  Model healthy eating habits  Not send any food to school containing nuts or nut trace elements 

NB With up to 34 students per class the school does not encourage or endorse parents/caregivers bringing food (cakes/ice-creams/confectionary) to class for student birthdays. An alternative is to celebrate at the park after school with the class.

The role of the wider school community including Parents & Friends Association:  Where school activities involve the provision of food and drink to students, consideration should be given to modelling and promoting healthy eating.  Where school activities involve the provision of food and drink to the wider school community consideration should be given to providing healthy food options. P&Fs are encouraged to follow the Nutrition Australia healthy food pyramid and the Federal Government up-to-date Healthy Fundraising Guidelines in this regard.

Special Days/Occasions Recommendations  
