We moved at mach speed since our last newsletter! We participated in Cadet Selection Exercise (CSX) for California Wing (CAWG) Encampment, Non-Commissioned Officer’s School (NCOS) South, Search and Rescue Exercise Training (SAREX), Air Show San Diego, Orientation Rides (O Rides), San Diego Air and Space Museum educational field trip, Color Guard, and CAWG Wing Encampment. Whew! I have to say, since my Senior Member activation in February, I have learned so much and met the very best people! Of all the activities I attended, I appreciated the CAWG Encampment the most. At times, I felt just like a Basic Cadet Student who was overwhelmed with learning new things on demand. Just as quickly, I was proud to march alongside our flight, provide leadership guidance, and assist with minor medical needs to help the students get through the day (moleskin is our friend!). During my 10 days at Camp San Luis Obispo (lovingly called CAMP SLO), I observed big hearted, leadership driven, successful volunteers from all over the state come together and coordinate in such a way that brought the most organized, high quality and fun training a cadet could ask for. Senior Member volunteers ranged from retired high ranking military veterans to new Air Force Academy graduates; most of the Senior Members were former cadet. The days’ schedule was from predawn to late nights and offered a range of experiences from several aerospace education workshops, a challenging obstacle course, a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter ride and much more. But before I say too much, take a look inside and see for yourself! The last two months are full of amazing memories. I hope you can join us next time for the outstanding leadership experiences, personal growth, and lasting friendships! ————————————————1stLt Jennifer Davenport 1st Lt Jennifer Davenport

CSX 2015 RECAP On 13 May 2015, 75 cadets across California traveled to Camp San Luis Obispo and underwent a rigorous Cadet Selection Exercise (CSX) to identify Cadet Cadre for the upcoming 2015 CAWG Encampment in July. Each cadet selectee submitted an initial resume, cover letter, assessment tests, and other various requirements BEFORE they even arrived. Once they checked in, the review process began immediately and lasted until the end of the weekend. Each cadet selectee had to prove their proficiency in Drill, 6 Step Teaching Method, Customs and Courtesies, Barracks Skills, Communication Skills, Physical Fitness Instruction, Review Boards, and pass a Comprehensive Test covering various related manuals. Then on Saturday night, a highly motivated group of Cadets and Senior Members carefully selected which cadet deserved which CAWG Encampment position. The meeting lasted well past midnight. Over 75 cadets applied and only 54 were chosen. Sunday morning at 0630 all of the cadets were gathered together, split into two groups, and given the news. I am proud to say all of the Squadron 144 Cadets that applied for CAWG Encampment Cadre were selected! Talk about an exciting ride home! I had a fabulous time driving and observing the whole selection process. I would do it again in a heartbeat! 1stLt Jennifer Davenport C/2dLt Calvin Amos: Lima Flight Commander C/2dLt Madeleine Angquico: Department Head of Mess C/SSgt Alex Davenport, Mess NCO C/SrA Jacob Richards, Alpha Flight Sergeant

What a great “ride” we had at the San Diego Air and Space Museum on 16 June 2015. We had an excellent turn out! We were honored to have three docents leading three separate tours for our cadets and family members. Each of the docents had great perspective, insight, and humor. There is always something new to learn about history, listen to the docent’s personal history, and become aware of the great sacrifices that were made to ensure our freedom. In addition, Navy Captain Milton Low, JAG, USN (Ret) was our special guest and awarded three top cadets with special achievements.

Orientation Rides

otherwise known as “O” Rides were offered on 26 June 2015 at Gillespie Field to cadets in order to expose them to a small single engine aircraft. Cadets are offered 5 free “O” Rides before the age of 18 in hopes to instill a love to fly. Each “O” Ride is tailored to educate the cadet on specific flight training objectives. To learn more, read CAPP 52-7 Flight Syllabus on e-services. Thanks to CAP Pilots for their time and expertise training the cadets. We are forever grateful!

NEW HORIZONS MISSION TO THE PLUTO SYSTEM ON 14 JULY 2015 By Maj Dennis Ammann, Aerospace Education Officer NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew by Pluto and its five moons on 14 July 2015 becoming the last planet like body in our solar system to be photographed. Only the USA has been able to do this through the years. This spacecraft was launched aboard a Atlas V rocket on 19 Jan 2006, becoming the fastest spacecraft in history leaving Earth at 37,000 mph. A year later on 28 Feb 2007 it received a gravitational assist from Jupiter, increasing its speed to 51,000 mph. Finally on 14 July 2015 with the Sun slowing it's speed, it flew by Pluto at 31,000 mph with it's closest point of approach at 7,800 miles from the surface. All on board instruments seemed to work fine, but we won't know for about 1.5 years from now, because that's how long it will take to download all the data to APL via the DSN. Go to: eyes.nasa.gov, download the software, and watch New Horizons fly-by Pluto and it's moons, while shifting from camera to camera, sensor to sensor, targeting Pluto and it's 5 moons. Ponder if you can, the brilliant people who built this robot that could go so far and still operate! Perhaps they attended a CAP STEM robot class in the past? New Horizons isn't finished yet, she's on her way to the Kuiper Belt to take pictures of a small object in two years and then onward to a second object 5 years from now. Eventually, NASA would like to New Horizons to measure where our solar system's border ends. NASA is already doing this with Voyagers I and II. Next year NASA's spacecraft Juno will go into orbit around our largest planet: Jupiter, for close-up encounter, so stay tuned and 'Keep Looking Up.' Maj Dennis Ammann sharing his telescope at our monthly PT meetings. He is always teaching us new things about aerospace! Thank you Maj Ammann for your enthusiasm! We appreciate you so much! 9

Air Show San Diego Another great year at Air Show San Diego on 20-12 June 2015. Thanks to Maj Dennis Ammann and his outstanding cadet staff, they were able to provide Flight Line Security for both days and have the opportunity to camp out on the tarmac Saturday night. Maj Dennis Ammann provided an Aerospace Education walk-around at 'Fighter Row' learning about the various WWII, Korean, and Vietnam War era aircraft, ending with a very informative replica small arms lesson by 1st Sgt Mike Wilgus, President, 82nd Airborne WWII History Assoc. Cadets and Senior Members from six squadrons were represented for a total of 38 personnel. Give it a try next year and enhance your resume and learn about AE.

California Wing Encampment 2015 was greatly anticipated by all. Over 200 cadets from across the state came together to either be a student and learn to follow or be part of the cadre and learn to lead. From aerospace classes and physical fitness to rifle simulation and U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopter flights, students and cadre had a opportunity to gain new experiences, learn from each other, and ultimately, come together as a team. Excellent experience! Congratulations to all who attended! Cadre: C/2dLt Amos, C/2dLt Angquico, C/SSgt Davenport, and C/SrA Richards. Students: C/Amn B. Braxmeyer, C/Amn J.
