SPRING TRAINING APRIL 22, 2017 CPCC LEVINE CAMPUS MATTHEWS, NC Spring Training is Mecklenburg County Council’s “GET OUT IN FRONT” and get ready for summer camp and being prepared for BACK TO SCHOOL volunteer assignments. Come participate in expert instruction to provide trained leadership for your UNIT! As with all MCC Training opportunities, Spring Training is for ALL adults. There are courses offered for new or seasoned leaders, wishing to either update their Scouting knowledge or simply learn something new and different. Courses are also available for Boy Scouts. Please note Rank and/or age requirements. Cub Scout Volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend this April training to get a jump on your new position role for BACK TO SCHOOL. Adult Leaders involved in Venturing should attend this great training. There will classes offered to help you get geared up for your Venture Crew as well as helping you beef up your program. What do you need? • • • • •
Bring pen and paper or PC/iPad for notes and a folder to hold the handouts. Unfortunately, we do not have Wi-Fi access through CPCC. Wear your Field Scout uniform and comfortable shoes. Doors open at 7:15 AM. PLEASE arrive at least 45 minutes ahead of your first scheduled session to help us get everyone checked in. Sessions start promptly at 8:00 AM! Lunch is provided.

ALL POSITIONS SPECIFIC CERTIFICATION COURSE Youth Protection Training & Certification (Y01) All registered adults MUST complete this certification every 2 years in order to be current during annual unit recharter. This training module is also available online.
CUB SCOUT POSITION SPECIFIC TRAININGS These courses offer in-depth details for fulfilling the responsibilities of the following leadership positions: Cubmaster, Den Leader (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos), and Pack Committee. These sessions should be completed within 60 days of accepting one of these positions. All adults are encouraged to complete Before the First Meeting and First 30 Days found at the Training Dashboard link at the National BSA website – www.My.Scouting.org Cubmaster and Assistant Position Specific Training (C40) This course is intended to provide Cubmasters and assistant Cubmasters with the basic information they need to conduct successful pack meetings. (Required for Trained patch for Cubmaster). Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters are also strongly encouraged to attend Pack Committee training. Cub Scout Den Leader and Assistant Position Specifics Training (C42) The Den Leader Position Specific Training course provides Cub Scout den leaders with the basic information they need to conduct successful den meetings. (Required for Trained patch for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Den Leaders). Pack Committee Position Specific Training (C60) This position-specific course for Cub Scout pack committee members is intended to provide members with the basic information they need to support a pack and conduct a successful pack program. This course is conducted based on the five parts of a typical pack committee meeting and is best when delivered at one time to all members of the pack’s committee and, if possible, the Cubmaster and assistant Cubmaster. (Required for Trained patch for Pack Committee member). Webelos Den Leader Training (C61) Learn about running a Webelos Den. Look at organization, recognition, and program planning for the Den. Discuss the transition to Boy Scouts. Membership – Cub Scout Recruitment (1PM – 2PM) A MUST for every Pack. This session will get you marketing your Pack year-round. It will also provide you with the essential tools for a fun and successful ROUND-UP. Remember, before we can get Scouting into our youth, we must get our youth in Scouting!
Lion Cub Den Leader Training A Lion den is a group of usually six to eight kindergarten-age boys who meet to participate in the Lion program with their adult partners.

BOY SCOUT POSITION SPECIFIC TRAININGS These courses offer in-depth details for fulfilling the responsibilities of the following leadership positions: Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Troop Committee Member. Training should be completed within 60 days of accepting one of these positions. There is one introductory session – Fast Start Orientation Training – that are ONLY available online and should be completed prior to attendance at Spring Training. Log into www.MY.Scouting.org to find this training module. Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training (S24) This training is specifically for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. This course is designed to introduce adult Boy Scout leaders to the basic information needed for operating a troop. It includes (1) Troop Organization, (2) the Patrol Method, (3) Leadership, (4) Advancement, and (5) Resources and Program Planning. (Required for Trained patch for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters). Troop Committee Challenge (WS10) Learn how a troop committee should be organized and the tasks which need to be completed by each member of the Committee. With proper organization, the Troop Committee can work better with the Scoutmaster and be much more effective at helping to deliver the Promise to our Scouts. (Required for Trained patch for Troop Committee members). Chartered Organization Representative Training (D72) Review the duties and responsibilities of the Chartered Organization Representative and how to be a more effective Chartered Organization Representative. Learn how to integrate the Scout unit into the activities of your chartered organization to achieve the missions of the chartered organization and the unit.
CERTIFICATION TRAINING SESSION – ADULTS ONLY Merit Badge Counselor Training (D76) Why are Merit Badge Counselors an essential part of the Advancement process? Learn who is qualified to serve as a Merit Badge Counselor, how to be an effective Merit Badge Counselor, and how to obtain approval of Merit Badge Counselors from your District Advancement Chair. Climb on Safely (S74) Climb On Safely is the Boy Scouts of America’s procedure for organizing BSA climbing/rappelling activities at a natural site or a specifically designed facility such as a climbing wall or tower. All unit-sponsored/planned climbing activities, regardless of where they are held, fall under Climb On Safely. This applies to a single unit or multiple units that may be participating in a joint unit climbing activity. Tour and activity plans are required for any unit activities involving climbing and rappelling. Tour leaders are responsible for making sure all points of Climb On Safely are followed. Unit committee chairs must ensure that an adult on the tour has taken Climb On Safely training.
CERTIFICATION TRAINING SESSION – ADULTS & YOUTH General CPR, AED, & First Aid Training and Certification Is your Certification up to date? CPR, AED, and basic First Aid (required for Camp Staff) is presented during this session. There is an additional $10 charge for this course. This course WILL NOT fulfill requirements necessary for Lifesaving Merit Badge. YOUTH AGE MINIMUM – 13 years old or First Class rank.
Mechanics of Eagle Advancement Learn about Boards of Review where participants will be instructed on how to properly conduct Boards of Review with emphasis on subject areas common to the Scout through Eagle Scout ranks. Learn the "nuts and bolts" regarding the steps that occur after a Scout thinks he has completed all requirements for Scout to Eagle Scout ranks. Topics will include Scoutmaster Review, Eagle Rank Application, Letters of Reference, differences in the Eagle Board of Review and other rank reviews, final evaluation of the Eagle Service Project and the appeals process. Learn about the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook and the process relating to it. The responsibility of the Scout and the role of supporting adults will be explained. The aim of this part of the course is to provide all the necessary information required so that the Eagle Scout candidate may successfully complete his project. The Eagle Scout Project Workbook will be fully explained. Life Scouts are eligible to attend this session for personal information and understanding in preparing, planning and executing their Eagle Scout project. The target audience is all Scouters who support Scouts’ advancement from Scout to Eagle Scout ranks. This includes Troop Committee members, troop leaders and District Eagle Review Representatives. The latter, if not up to date with this training, are especially urged to attend. Life Rank Scouts are welcome and encouraged to attend this course, especially from 10:00am until noon.. Lifetime Volunteer Commitments & You This is a course offered by the Membership Committee that will allow you to understand how your commitment as a leader helps both your Scouting organization and you become a more rounded group and individual. You will find new ways to inject energy into your Scouting group that will keep Scouts involved and attract new members.
VENTURING POSITION SPECIFIC TRAININGS Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) (P35) Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) course was created to help Venturers learn and practice the attitudes and skills effective leaders demonstrate. Practicing and mastering these skills within the crew will provide Venturers with positive leadership experiences in and outside the crew. This course consists of a series of lessons divided into three modules: Leading Self, Leading Others, and Leading Crews. This is a 6-hour class and TShirts for ILSC will be available for pre-order during this training ($10 each). Goal Setting and Time Management for Venturing Crews (P36) This course is a requirement for the Venturing Discovery Award. However, it can be taken by Venturers at any time regardless of whether they are working on the award. This course will be facilitated by experienced Venturers and will focus on the following: time management strategies, how to set priorities, how to perform work in a timely manner, and how to schedule time appropriately. This course will be a 2-hour class. Mentoring for Venturing Crews (P38) This training is designed to help Ventures understand how to mentor other members of the crew and appreciate the role mentoring plays in personal growth and leadership for both the mentee and mentor. After completing this training, an experienced Venturer will be able to successfully mentor a less-experienced Venturer through the planning an execution of a crew adventure. Venturing Advisor Specific Training The course will provide an introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Venturing crew leadership experience. Crew Committee Challenge (WS12) The Crew Committee Challenge is designed for crew committee members and becomes the course (along with the Venturing version of Youth Protection training) crew committee members need to be considered “trained.” Venturing Leader Specific Training (P21) This course is designed to introduce adult Venturing Crew leaders to the basic information needed for operating a crew. It includes (1) Here’s Venturing, (2) Understanding and Protecting Youth, (3) Leadership-Organization, (4) Advancement, and (5) Resources and Program Planning. (Required for Trained position patch)

Registration fee at check-in on Saturday April 22nd will be $30 for all participants, due to late lunch order requirements. Note the additional $15 charge for CPR. Lunch is included in the registration fee.
