A NEWSLETTER OF THE RUM RIVER SPECIAL EDUCATION COOPERATIVE

From the Director

It is with mixed emotions that I write this final newsletter as the Rum River Director of Special Education. As most of you know, I am retiring at the end of the school year. In the last nine years, I have learned more about special education than I ever thought possible. I’ve guided the RRSEC through the journey of becoming a joint powers district and collaborated with others to add another Federal Setting IV program in the cooperative. I could go on and on, but those things are insignificant in the big picture. My greatest joy has been working with all the people I’ve met along the way. Most are amazing: teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, interagency partners, parents, students, administrative assistants and everyone else who contributes to the success of the special education programs in our districts and to the positive outcomes for students with disabilities. But, I also count myself lucky to have worked with others that have caused me great stress, for they have made me stronger, more empathetic and resilient. I don’t know what retirement will bring for me, but it’s the unknown and potential that excites me. I’m not someone who seeks predictability and control - I guess that’s why special education was a good fit for me. I do know that I will miss all of you and will forever cherish the relationships we’ve had. I am your biggest cheerleader and I will continue brag about you and what we have accomplished. Thank you for all you do! With sincere gratitude- Pauline Pauline Bangma, Special Education Director

Additional Retiring Staff

As I write this message, I am only 23 workdays from retiring as a coordinator in the RRSEC. I have worked in the Rum River Special Education Cooperative for the past 18 years. In so doing, I have had the opportunity to work in the CambridgeIsanti, Princeton, Mora, and Braham school districts. During this time, I have met many wonderful and dedicated special education teachers/support staff. Your commitment to being the best educator you could be has been much appreciated over the years. When I am asked what I will miss most about my job, my answer is always the same - the many fine people I have gotten the opportunity to work with and come to know over the past 18 years. The paperwork and file reviews - not so much. J As I enter retirement, I have two things I plan on doing to help occupy my time. The first is to give a day a week to my church, during which time I will visit and give communion to shut-ins, who can no longer make it to church, or just visit with those who would like some additional company. I am also going to supervise four special education student teachers who will be student teaching in the north metro area. I am guessing this will keep me busy about a day a week. In closing, thank you to all of you who I have had the opportunity to work with. You have very challenging jobs that you do well and I hope in some small way that I may have helped you grow as special educators. Dave Dave Eberhardt, Special Education Coordinator

Well, it’s finally time for me to start my next adventure in my life! I have been with the CambridgeIsanti School District for 20 years. I started out as an Emotional Behavior Disorder Teacher at Cambridge Elementary School (that was the name at that time). I remember collecting data, putting data points on a graph that I manually created on graphing paper to show parents the progress their child was making. We even had to hand in our curriculum plans prior to the week that we would be implementing them to be ok’d. My how things have changed. I then took a position at Rum River South, our Level IV program, as a Reintegration Specialist. That was located in the hallway of our District Office! CRAZY BUT I LOVED IT! If only the walls could talk there! I currently work at Rum River Special Ed Cooperative as an Autism Consultant/Behavior Analyst; I cover Cambridge, Isanti, and Mora (birth to 21). The staff here and in all the schools have been like family to me! I will miss them all dearly; however, I do look forward to spending more time with my husband, three children, their spouses, and my three granddaughters! I plan to travel as much as I can and may just do a little consulting on the side. ;) I just don’t think I can give that part up completely, as I do love the children. Thank you all for providing me an excellent district to work in and with a place that I have always looked forward to coming to work! Lynn Lynn Schutte, Autism Consultant & Behavior Analyst
