School Climate Surveys The Accepting Schools Act requires that school boards conduct anonymous School Climate Surveys of students, staffs, and parents every two years. The Board last conducted the surveys during the 20102011 school year and they are being conducted again this school year, between May 624, 2013. Focus groups from our parent association (CSPA), the principals’/vice principals’ association (OCPVPA), and the unions (OECTA, CUPE 2357, and Unite Here) gave input on this year’s school surveys. The surveys relate to our board priority “Building faithfilled communities that support Catholic Character Formation” as they surveys measure how effectively our policies and practices are in ensuring a safe, inclusive, and accepting learning environment in our schools. This year’s surveys will focus on 4 indicators: Relationships, Teaching Learning Environment, Safety, and School Environment. For details on School Climate Surveys, view pages 1927 of the April 23, 2013 Board Agenda.
Communication Branding Update Director of Education, Julian Hanlon, updated the Board on the branding and communication strategy. It focuses on four key areas: Mission and vision; Vision branding; New motto; and Changes to Board logo. The strategy has been developed with input from stakeholder groups, trustees and senior administration and will launch to the system following Catholic Education Week 2013.
Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (BIPSA) Director of Education, Julian Hanlon, updated the Board on the branding and communication strategy. It focuses on four key areas: Mission and vision; Vision branding; New motto; and c Tom D’Amico, Superintendent of Human Resources, updated the Trustees on the ongoing Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (BIPSA) – Community, Culture and Caring Goal. Mr. D’Amico leads the interdepartmental team focusing on Building faithfilled communities that support character formation based on the Catholic Graduate Expectations. The presentation included examples of how Board staff monitor the implementation of this goal. He outlined three specific inquiry intentions: 1. If we focus on our Board Spiritual theme, "By our works, we show our Faith", will student work and discourse reflect our distinctive Catholic language and social teachings? 2. If rich learning tasks are a focus in religious education across all grades, will there be improvement in content knowledge and engagement? 3. If we focus on mental health knowledge mobilization and the promotion of positive mental health strategies, then we will decrease the stigma associated with mental health and increase the opportunities for student success?

An example of monitoring in the area of mental health included the tracking of the number of school staff that are being trained in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and Safe Talk, workshops to help identify and support students with suicide ideation. The strong focus on our Catholic Identity is evident from the overview provided of goal one of the Board Improvement Plan. For details on BIPSA, view pages 1618 of the April 23, 2013 Board Agenda. hanges to Board logo.
