Special Interest Group Activity As you are probably already aware Canada’s political system, for the most part, functions smoothly and efficiently. Laws are generally passed with the intention of serving the best interests of most Canadians. However, at times the legislative process may come across as undemocratic, as in the case of extreme powers of the Prime Minister, and the ineffectiveness of the Canadian Senate to actually provide a “Sober Second Thought” to bills passed in the House of Commons. In addition, there are many Special Interests Groups (SIG) that influence political decision making and the legislative process. Some of these Special Interest Groups operate to promote the economic interests of the group they represent (ie Tobacco Industry). Other special interest groups such as Doctors Without Borders operate to promote humanitarian issues. Definition: An interest group (also advocacy group, lobby group, pressure group or special interest group) is an organization that seeks to influence political decisions. This can be done by explaining the benefits of a policy to the relevant politicians, by making financial contributions or incentives, or a combination of the two. Public and private corporations work with lobbyists to persuade public officials to act or vote according to group members’ interests. So here is your assignment: Part 1 *Using the computer lab, research 2 Special Interest Groups (SIG) in North America (1 must operate in Canada) *from your perspective one SIG must provide a positive role in Canadian society, the other provides a negative role *You must provide a brief background of the SIG and explain what each group hopes to achieve. For each group you should also indicate if they have been successful in influencing the legislative process. Part 2 Using poster paper or some other form of visual representation (ie. pamphlets, brochures) research one SIG that you feel contributes positively to Canadian society and one SIG that you feel contributes negatively to Canadian society. For each SIG you must: Indicate what they hope to achieve Indicate where they get their financing Indicate the logo that is associated with the SIG (if possible) Indicate how each SIG has influenced the legislative process Provide a strong opinion of each SIG Present your finding to the class Due Date?
