Spartan News Graduation Cap and Gown History I don’t know about you, but I’ve questioned more than once the reason behind why graduates wear those funny square hats and long billowy gowns. They don’t do any specific purpose for us now days, but what about way back when. Well, back in the middle age medieval scholars would make vows to the church so their main dress would be the church robes. The robes/gowns were used to keep them warm when the winter came and the church would become very cold. As centuries went by some colleges made it mandatory that all scholars were to wear a long gown. Gold tassels were worn only by people who paid for the status of "gentlemancommoner,” which was a prestigious title. The “ordinary commoner” wore a black tassel. Eventually around the 1800’s they started to use colors to signify areas of study. As time went by all colleges adapted their graduation dress to the cap and gown. High schools were the last to join in.

Athletic Banquet On April 22, 2015, the Spartan Athletic Banquet was held. The program went as follows: a guest speaker, the football team awards, the volleyball team awards, recognizing the crosscountry team, girls basketball awards, boys basketball awards, the cheerleading squad, recognizing the track team, recognizing the baseball team.

The post season awards were also presented. The following were presented:

The guest speaker was John Hagerly, head coach of the University of Jamestown’s volleyball team. He grew up in an athletic family, and got to travel with his dad and twin brother to his dad’s games. His father retired just last year from being a coach and teacher. Mr. Hagerly was involved in all youth athletics. He told all of the athletes and their parents that a significant part of his growing up took place on the court. Towards the end of his speech, he taught us three lessons: being able to understand our level of commitment and persistence of a sport; not trying to be something that we aren’t, but instead, just being ourselves; the power of people working together and being on the same page.

The volleyball team was announced after this happened. Mr. Pool took a couple minutes, saying how proud he was of his girls, and how much he would miss the seniors next year. He also talked about how happy and proud he was of the team for being the runner-up for the Region 2 volleyball tournament. The girls were so close to going to the state tournament, but they fell short by one team: Thompson. But, they still had a fun season, all the same. The team was recognized, along with the stats lady, Alex Chapman. Again, Mr. Pool made a scene, saying how much she would keep her in line, and she just kept smiling to receive her award for being the volleyball manager. The following were the awards that were announced:

FCCLA Fundraising After a great three days at the State FCCLA conference, the six students that are advancing have reached a financial crisis: they had to fundraise $12,000 by May 15th!!! Some of the competitors had already been to the National Conference, so they knew what to do. Others were panicking, because they were also informed that their parents would have to come up with half of the money for them to even go. But, they have had a good start. The students and their advisor went around the community, asking businesses for donations for the students, and the group just finished with a pancake breakfast, which was a free-will donation. The students also sold pizzas, butter braids, and puffins. For those of you who don’t know, butter braids and puffins are pastries with fruit stuffed inside them. Finally, the group plans on making a meatball supper on Wednesday, May 13. The supper costs $10 for adults, and $7 for children 12 years old and younger. The supper will be from 5 to 7:30. After the students and advisor clean up the supper, they will be rushing back to the school and plead their case to the school board for a donation. We hope for the best for all six students and their advisor, Monica Hanson, in their financial plans, and we wish them the best of luck in the National FCCLA Conference in Washington D.C. from July 5-11.

The team has had a rough season, but the boys have tried their very best. There are many young faces on the team, and they are getting all the help they need to be better players from their fellow senior players, who will never play with them again. Still, they will get the guidance and the knowledge of the game from these seniors, and they will better perfect the sport of baseball in their later years of school.
