Sessions 7th & 8th Graders UNC vs. Duke: Are you a Blue Devil or a Tarheel? Spend the week digging into and researching the rivalry that is UNC and Duke. Examine the history of the universities, their similarities and differences, and how the rivalry came to be. Then write, prepare, and direct a commercial advertisement or other media production to promote one of these stellar universities! Brilliant Bloggers: Want to be a published author? Want to create stories, arguments, and innovating conversations with other students? Then Brilliant Bloggers is for you! Learn how to express/edit/revise/ publish your thoughts, opinions, and ideas on a class blog that invites the world into our classroom. What’s My Line? Do you have a love for drama and great literature? Join our class, “What’s my Line?” as we work through some of literature’s most favorite monologues and best improvisational theatre games and perform some of them in class. We’ll then look at how a playwright writes a monologue. Finally, we will create our own unique monologues and perform them! Design and Functions: The Geometry of Bridges: Ever wondered where bridges get their shape? Or how a bridge’s shape affects its strength? In this class, we’ll look at the geometry behind common constructions such as pillars, chains, and bridges. Using paper, glue, and string, we will construct our own bridge designs and test the strength of each. It’s All About the Benjamins: Have you ever wondered how credit cards work? Or been curious about the different types of insurance and how each operates? Do you believe you have what it takes to become successful in the stock market? This course is designed to give you a basic foundation for how to make the most of your money. A real-life version of the board game Life, we’ll preview everything that goes into financial planning. Hip Hop It: Examining Rap As An Art Form: Are you a budding hiphop artist? This course will focus on the history of rap as a music genre, highlighting specific rappers, songs, and events along the way. You will examine lyrics of specific songs, and the impact certain artists and songs have had on pop culture. You will also get to create your own hip-hop masterpiece using popular music apps such as “GarageBand.” Whimsical Gadgets: Exploring Engineering and Physics through Rube Goldberg: Do you want to help make a super machine? In this class we will bring a few of Rube Goldberg’s designs to life using knowledge of energy and simple machines.

Aliens, Wizards, and Zombies: Writing That Fantasy: Are you a fan of books like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games Trilogy, or the Twilight Series? If so, you’ll love further examining this genre of classic and contemporary Science Fiction and Fantasy short stories as you prepare to write your own masterpiece. Writing workshops and close readings will be cornerstones of this project-based course! Flash Mob Mentality: What turns a crowed into a Mob? Students will explore the concept on “mob mentality” and examine why individuals in a crowd act differently then they do when they’re alone. In big groups, people might laugh louder, feel braver, or get angrier. In some instances, significant historical events have been triggered by the action of a mob. Students will analyze how mob mentality influences human nature and evaluate how the tools of conquest do not necessarily come with violence. The Rhythm of Poetry: Exploring Poetry Through Music: It has been said that, "Poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for!" Learn how to examine the best that life has to offer through this unique poetry course. We will examine songs as poetry and how the two have combined to change the world. The People’s Court: The Court of Durham County is now in session. Through the process of enacting trials, you will experience the justice system of the United States. Will you take on the role of the judge, jury, prosecutor, defender or witness? In this course you will learn to organize facts, develop speaking and questioning abilities, and understand the concepts of the justice system through deliberation. Experimental Photography & Screen Printing: Transform your digital photos into display-worthy works of art in this experimental photography and printmaking class! All the printing techniques will be done outside of the darkroom so you can continue to print at home! We will create ink jet transfers, Polaroid film transfers, screen-printing and more! Leave this class with ready to hang and wear artwork made by you!

4th - 6th Graders Around the World: Have you ever wondered what children in other parts of the world do for fun? Do you know any games from other countries? After exploring popular games from around the world, we will create and come up with OUR OWN unique game! Imagination, creativity, and collaboration combined with infinite fun! Web Page Creation & Tech Tools: Want to learn how to make your own webpage? Webpages are helpful tools for both social and academic purposes. Learn how to embed pictures, make a blog, create an online poster and discover how to tell a story using animation. Art for a Cause: Are you tuned in and passionate about an important issue like equality, homelessness, pollution, global warming, or some other cause? Learn how artists like Picasso, Beardon and Banksy have spoken out on issues they were passionate about through their art. Experiment with abstract, collage, and graffiti and design a plan to promote your selected cause through art.

It’s Electric: Come and be an electrical engineers creating circuit boards for a new invention! You will learn about open and closed circuit boards using common household materials and create circuit boards that are commonly used in today’s electronics while exploring applied mathematics and science concepts. Join us for this hands-on, minds-on course! There’s a Scientist in the PantryTake a look in your pantry. Do you know how many fun, exciting science experiments can be completed with baking soda or sugar? We will open up our pantry and discover many cool chemical concoctions! You’ll never view your pantry the same way again! Please Keep Your Arms and Legs inside of the Car at All Times: Did you know you can explore mathematics, physics, and engineering through roller coasters? In this class we will explore concepts of gravity, force, balance, acceleration, and friction. Newton's Laws of Motion have never been this exciting! Nature’s Fury Robotics: Did you know that robots can be of great assistance during a natural disaster? Join our team as we research the impact of natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or wildfires and design an invention to assist the community in the event of such an occurrence—including programming a robot! Awesome Archimedes: Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Join us as we explore many of his greatest discoveries including: The Archimedes Principle (Why things float or sink), the mathematical principle of the lever, the Archimedes’ screw, the story of the golden crown, and the approximate value of π. Using the scientific method we will explore the many discoveries of this great mind. Bridges to Span the Test of Time: Bridges are our connections to the world. There are millions of bridges throughout the world and we rely on them everyday. Engineers have designed them since ancient times to withstand all forces of nature. Come explore, cross and create bridges of your own and learn the engineering secrets of building structures that span the test of time.

Spin Me a Story: Travel around the world as we explore ancient and modern cultures through the stories of its people. Folktales with interesting characters and plotlines spun with wisdom have been passed down over the generations. Explore these folktales and learn about the art of storytelling by creating and performing your own.
