Alan Evans - Celebrating 40 Years of Calling July 16th proved to be a “Right Royal Occasion” when over 100 present and past Square Dancers, including two from NZ, gathered to honour Alan Evans, Caller Extraordinaire’s grand achievement of 40 years of Square Dance Calling. He was presented with a Throne, Robe, Chains of Office, a beautiful gold crown encrusted with jewels and a personalised bottle of Bundaberg Rum, and glasses set. Past President and current Vice-President Harold Liley presented a history of Alan’s career, and presented Alan with a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. Alan’s wife Jane was also honoured for her contribution to Square Dance, and her support of Alan. Joy Kurtz read a poem she had written for the occasion Several callers attended and assisted Alan with the nights entertainment, which also included a round dance and clogging demonstration. A wonderful supper topped off a very special and fabulous night, which was enjoyed by all. Heather Pennington - President Gumdale Grandsliders Square Dance Club Inc.

Alan Evans It gives me great pleasure to be standing here next to Alan celebrating his 40 years of calling. Having called at various clubs for some time, Alan started up his own club (Alan’s Allemanders) in 1975 and 39 years later it is still going strong. In 1992, when Eric Wendell was no longer able to call for Gumdale Grandsliders, Alan was asked to take on the position of club caller. After 22 years he is still able to bring lots of laughter and good dancing to our growing number of members. Alan has been a regular caller at Logan City Square Dance Club since 1994. He was fundamental in the establishment of the club. Burleigh Squares approached Alan to be their club caller in 1997. Over a period of 17 years the club has gone from strength to strength. Alan also served as Vice President of the QCA for 2 Years 1993 & 1994, President of QCA for 8 years 1995 – 2003, Caller Trainer for the QCA for 8 years during this time. He was also a member of the Program & Development Committee for 17 years 1995 – 2012. His dedication to square dancing has been recognised by the ACF and the QCA in a number of ways. The presentation of the Silver Microphone Award by the ACF for (25 years of calling), Life Membership awarded in 2009 (he is only 1 of 2 people given this award) and the addition of his name on the Scroll of Honour in 2004. We are all very familiar with Alan’s “true” stories, his strange sense of humour and his quick wit. Even though we have all heard his jokes and stories several times, we never really tire of them, although, sometimes his “true” stories are questionable. Apart from all this we love him to death and wouldn’t have him any other way. Jane Evans Jane is the quiet one of these two, but behind a good man there is a good woman who keeps him as organised as she can. Without Jane, Alan wouldn’t know what he is doing from one day to the next. Unlike Alan, she has kept up with technology and has the responsibility of handling any paperwork and anything that involves the use of a computer. Over the years Jane has given her support not only to Alan, but to the Clubs involved, having served on the committees of Alan’s Allemanders, Logan City and Gumdale Grandsliders. Along with Alan, she is a life member of Alan’s Allemanders and an Honorary Member of Gumdale Grandsliders. Thank-you Alan and Jane. Harold Liley – Gumdale Grandsliders

WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS On the 2nd July we walked into the hall to see the stage decked out in Red White and Blue. We were celebrating G/Day U.S.A. and it was a sight to behold. Christine and her band of merry helpers had done yet another great job on the decorations. Everyone came dressed in red, white and blue for the occasion. Some of the items for supper were also U.S.A. orientated. Sid called a lot of numbers within the theme as well. A great night was had by all. June Lambert

Quite a number of our members have been having a rough time with either sickness or injuries over the past number of weeks, including Margaret. Our "Anything Goes In August" dance will be on, on the 30th August. Full details are on our flyer. We would love to see you there. This will be our second last dance. STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING Since last we met, I have received a number of requests for an expanded report on the 19th ACA National Clogging Convention, held with much fun and top organising in our northern most capital city- DARWIN; pleased so many readers were enthusiastic about the big ‘D’. Soooo here we go! This city really looked after us with friendly help, the wonderment of the Territory’s natural beauty and wildlife (bearing in mind that old song ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’). Virtual armies of tourists and backpackers, fly-in fly-out miners, and armed services personnel makes it a really alive place to visit. The expansion of residential suburbs, the high rise apartment blocks, and the many kilometres of road works, made many an eye pop for those dancers who may have been to Darwin in earlier years, and certainly impressed those of us who have never been before; but now we know, and so glad we did go. The cleanliness of the city is another great advert. for them. Regarding work opportunities in Darwin, as one on the locals put it “There is plenty of work available, providing you are not fussy what you do, aren’t lazy, or have so much money you don’t need to work.” Back to the Convention itself, which was held in several of the many halls sited in the huge Marrara Sports Complex, and we had the pleasure of having Shane Gruber from Michigan as our Guest Instructor. Shane did a super job and is a natural entertainer. This year’s Showcase winner was Victoria dancing an Intermediate dance to the music ‘Stuck’ choreographed by Josh King. Congratulations to the Vic. Team - a top performance. Thank you to all the dancers and supporters who attended, the Cuers and Instructors who all did a great job, and all the members of the organising Committee lead by Jenny Neal as Convenor. Jenny has completed her term as ACA President, with incoming President being widely known Clogger and Square Dancer Jason Nicholson. Jason, along with his wife, the lovely Leanne, are joint Convenors for next year’s ACA National Clogging Convention to be held in Gosford on the New South Wales Central Coast in September, 2015. Easy to get a registration form, plus info. on accommodation etc.; email the Gosford Team at: [email protected] or look on the ACA website: www.cloggingaustralia.com Our best wishes to Nathan Ballard who is now on a 12 month’s stay in the good ole’ US of A. Nathan advises he is enjoying many a Clogging Session during his visit. Clogging is a very popular pastime in the Land of the Stars and Stripes. Olive Borovsky is very pleased with the number of enquiries received since the Darwin Convention for info. about this year’s Aussie Clog, to be held on the first weekend in September. Her telephone number is 3345 3066. Dancer numbers are keeping up at Clubs despite the Winter shivers doing the rounds in most parts of Australia. People certainly warm to Clogging. Enjoy the day! Best Wishes, Frances FRANCES LOOK O.A.M. ‘PHONE: 07 3391 6526, MOBILE: 0429 851 891 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: www.cloggingaustralia.com

Cairns City Square Dance Club The Club’s Friday night’s dancing numbers has been down over the last couple of weeks with members either away or unable to dance due to injury. We also did not dance on the night of the Cairns Show holiday. Plus night has continued this month with Elva and Eddie visiting form Ulysses Club. At our Annual General Meeting held on 13th July the club’s executive remained unchanged with Ron remaining President, Henry Vice President and Bev, Secretary/Treasurer. On Wednesday 23rd July 9 members enjoyed a get together lunch on the Cairns Esplanade at the RSL club. The Club subsequently gained 9 new members. That seems to all the news for now. CANE COUNTRY SQUARES Have any of you been to a "Back to School Event"? If so, you will remember some of the punishments handed down for various reasons. Did you ever have detention for having your shirt hanging out or socks not pulled up? We were reminded of those days again when Cane Country Squares held their Back to School theme on 21st June. Our Guest Caller was Michael Mills from Rockhampton and he and Rachelle added so many laughs to the night with this theme. There was also a parcel post which was "too hot to handle". May be everyone was afraid too many tales would be told out of school. Margi re turned to dark hair plaits and Shirley had no-one to play basket ball with. It was a good workout when Michael called for "A" dancing the following morn ing, and Rounds in the afternoon. It was a busy weekend enjoyed by all who attended. Some of our learners also joined in the fun. Thanks Michael and Rachelle. We have given you a "High Distinction" for your efforts. Cane Country Squares have commenced a lucky membership draw at the end of each month commencing with $20.00 and if not claimed that month another $5.00 is added until the prize is claimed. Members must be financial and pre sent on the night to be eligible for the draw. Pam was the first member to claim the June prize and also won the raffle draw of the same night with two free entry passes to dancing.

SUNSHINE SQUARE & ROUND DANCE CLUB On the night of 18th July, Lynette had a party night with a difference. It was actually someone’s 60th birthday party. Marilyn Weier, a past dancer, wanted to celebrate her 60th with friends from Square Dancing. Four sets took to the floor for most of the night and again it was like going back in time. It was good to see some of the dancers from the old Pine Rangers Club dust off their dancing shoes for this fun night. Some people have to remember though that they are not as young as they used to be and the consequences are going to be felt the next day if they try too hard to re-capture their youth. Thanks to Helen for the birthday cake and Jim Endres for the beautiful basket of orchids presented to Marilyn. Also thanks to Beryl and her younger granddaughters for looking after the door and selling of the raffle tickets and older granddaughters for helping with supper. SUNCOASTERS We welcomed Nev and Bev back from their holiday at the beginning of July. Some of the nights have been very cold for we Queenslanders (although it is much colder down Victoria way). Many of us have kept our gloves on all night while dancing. We are still enjoying our dance sessions very much. During the day on Wednesday is a lot of fun for those who don’t like to go out at night. We are now looking forward to a big weekend starting Friday, 1 August which marks the opening of our lovely hall at Dixon Road, Buderim.

Graham & Margaret Brandon To all our many friends, I suppose you have been wondering where we are. Well here is a quick story. Graham was admitted to hospital on the Sunshine Coast late April and it was found that only 30% of his heart was functioning. He was discharged 10 days later. Doctors felt that it may be possible to improve the condition with medication. This didn’t work and it was decided that it would be best for him to have a combined defibrillator/pacemaker unit fitted to his heart. This was done on Thursday the 17 th July. Graham and Margaret had planned to attend Carousels Birthday but health comes first. During this time it was decided that it would be best for all concerned to relocate to the Sunshine Coast. This will take place on the 28th July. Here are our details and we would love to have you visit when up on the Coast. We will also try and visit clubs when we can. Please give us a ring any time.

Pine Rangers Square and Round Dance Club 1975 - 2001 Pine Rangers Square & Round Dance Club was started by Caller, Alan Leighton and wife Jennifer on 4th April 1975. Their first dance venue was the Pubic Hall in Kallangur. The club was well-attended and danced on Friday nights. Over the years, Alan, Jenny and their dancers held many different fun nights and special activities at Pine Rangers and even hosted the Society Christmas Party at Scarborough in 1984. In 1979, Alan started a second group on Tuesday nights at the Uniting Church Hall, Gerald Avenue, Clontarf. This group included Plus and Round Dancing as well as Mainstream. Eventually, Pine Rangers moved from its Kallangur venue and all dancing was held at Clontarf. Beginners classes were regularly held on Friday nights at Alan & Jenny’s home. At the end of 1985, Alan decided to give club calling away due to family and work pressures. Lynette Warrington (now Macpherson) was given the opportunity to take over the club, having commenced dancing with Pine Rangers in March 1984. With only 6 months calling experience, it was decided to appoint John and Margaret Casey as co-callers until Lyn had enough experience to run the club on her own. In 1989, with Lyn now as sole club Caller, Pine Rangers moved to the Clontarf Community Hall, Cornelius Street, Clontarf. Many special nights were held in this hall and one of the highlights was a special club visit from Eric Wendell and his club, Gumdale Grandsliders. Pine Rangers dancers were very active in the local community and often did demonstrations at the Redcliffe Hospital, Freeps, Festivals and the local shopping centres. On the 7th April 2000, Pine Rangers celebrated its 25th Birthday with a huge party. Over 100 dancers attended, including many past members. Special guests that evening were Graham and Val Rigby, Sid & Betty Leighton, Gary Petersen and Alan & Jenny Leighton . Sadly, due to family illness, Lyn placed Pine Rangers into recess in June 2001 after calling for the club for 15 years. Some of the Pine Rangers dancers still dance at other clubs but many retired from dancing when the club closed. When Lyn returned to club calling in 2009 at the old Pine Rangers hall under the name of Sunshine Square & Round Dance Club some of the past Pine Rangers dancers returned to dance with the new beginners.

On Friday 18th July 2014, a Pine Rangers Reunion was held at Sunshine Squares and 18 past members attended.
