Bugle - April 2016 The Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc. held our AGM Meeting and Dance on Sunday, 13th March 2016. This year the event was hosted by Gary Petersen and his club, Bribie Island Squares. The theme was “Beach Party” and everyone was asked to dress accordingly. The Stage was bright and colourful and so were the Callers and Cuers. Dancers were entertained by - Gary Petersen, Nev McLachlan, Sid Leighton, Lynette Macpherson and Dawn Keenan along with Cuers, Bev McLachlan and Julie Jensen. It was a great afternoon of dancing and fellowship. The meeting was vey well attended and we were delighted to welcome our Patron, Kerri-Anne Dooley. Thank-you to everyone who was involved in making the afternoon the success that it was. SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB We at Suncoasters are very happy, after a lot of fund raising and sausage sizzles etc, to at last be getting a new roof on our hall – there will be no more buckets around the floor to catch the drips when the rain comes down here. We only have to miss out on one week of dancing during the building work and this includes the Easter weekend. Plans are well under way for the National Convention to be held in Buderim at the end of June this year. We hope you have all registered but if not, there is still time for you to do so. The Sunshine Coast is a great place to be in the winter. We are looking forward to a Country and Western night at our club on 30 April and then the Club’s 46th Birthday night with the theme “Something from a Song” on 21 May. News from Rocky Twirlers Square Dance Club We are so very proud of our young dancer Madison Dyer for her recent efforts in our community. Maddy has grown up with us at square dancing and along with mother Ann-Maree and father Greg are a big part of our dancing family at Rocky Twirlers. Maddy has just finished Year 12 at Rockhampton State High School where she was school captain. She was also awarded the school $2000 bursary to help with tertiary studies and more recently Madison was awarded Young citizen of the year on Australia Day 2016 in Rockhampton for her endless list of distinguished sporting, musical and academic achievements. Maddy has also received numerous awards for her involvement in mental health. From all of us here at Rocky Twirlers we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours. We know you will go far!

Report from the 'AGM' "Beach Party" hosted by 'Bribie Island Squares' Many dancers, Callers and Cuers braved the Hot conditions to attend the Society AGM and stay on for the Beach Party. Some were also concerned with the change of dress code but soon relaxed and understood why. The AGM itself is an opportunity to find out what has been happening in the Society, vote on incoming committee members and accept Bids to host future Society Functions. The Bribie Island dancers quickly organised the stage and the kitchen for the proceedings to follow the meeting. Around 50 attended the event at the Recreation Hall and even though the Air Conditioning was on the blink { NB hall not advertised as air conditioned } Dancers enjoyed a mixed program of dancing provided by the Callers and Cuers. The Bribie Island dancers donated about 38 prizes for the raffle and all but 3 were picked up. The COLD water was in great demand and topped up regularly while the hot water was kept bubbling. The rolling Afternoon Tea just kept on rolling. On behalf of the Bribie Island dancers thanks for participating in our Beach Party! Keep on dancing, Gary Petersen

VALE TONI CREAGH At City Hall 50+ Square Dance Club, we sadly miss one of our dancers who has passed away recently. In fact the very last thing that Toni did was to square dance with us one Tuesday recently and at the end of that morning said she did not feel very well. Just to be on the safe side, one of the dancers called an ambulance and Toni went off to hospital. Toni had a stroke and died peacefully shortly after that. Toni also danced every Wednesday at Keperra Sanctuary Retirement Village where she was a resident. Then on a Thursday she also danced at the Carina Club. Square Dancing was something that gave her a lot of joy and something she looked forward to very much. She was a petite little Japanese lady who absolutely loved her square dancing and her smiling face will be greatly missed by our Club and the other Clubs where she danced. We have lost not only a dancer, but a friend. Cane Country Squares Twelve Cane Country Squares members celebrated the Club's 33rd Birthday with dinner at Across the Waves Club before dancing, and followed by good dancing and a chat during supper. Due to Matthew's absence because of illness, Shirley called some "Tough Plus" testing our interpretation of movements and providing a good night of dancing. Shirley's "A" dancing challenges us with many of the "all four" movements while Matthew provides an interesting afternoon of "A" dancing on Sundays with various combinations of movements in changing directions of travel. "Motivate" has been one of his favourite creative calls, sometimes ending in offset positions. We had two sets dancing for our "St Patrick's Night" with many wearing green for the occasion. Heather visited us from Gumdale Club, and we had a good roll up of our own members. Our Club Easter Raffle of $30 Coles Voucher was won by Alan Haslemore and low and behold the end of month member's draw on the same night with $20 cash value was won by Leslyn his wife - a lucky night for them both. All dancers are welcome to dance with us when our Guest Caller will be Michael Mills from Rockhampton on 2nd and 3rd of April. Saturday night will be classified an "April Fool's Dance". Hervey Bay Square Dance Club Hi from Hervey Bay, We are so excited. Recently, we held a free 'Come N Try' Saturday morning and we now have at least two squares of new dancers. They all seem keen to learn and love the way we are so friendly. Kay Walker came to call for our 27th Birthday on 12th March. The hall was suitably decorated with coloured balloons and lights. Our president made a lovely Birthday cake which she cut ably assisted by one of our Life Members, Daphne. Some of our new learners came and joined in the festivities which was great. After supper Kay was able to get them on the floor with the experienced dancers while she called the few moves they had just learnt. They were all excited to have danced to their first live caller. We celebrated two milestones last month. Iris had her 90th Birthday and flew to Adelaide to be with her family and Alf turned 85 years. More celebrating and eating cheese cake. Happy Birthday to both of them. Our next caller will be James Reid on the 14th May - Theme 'In the Pink'. Many of us will not have danced to James so are looking forward to a great afternoon and night. Cairns City Square Dance Club Our Club has danced regularly during the last month with consistent numbers. Diann has had both eyes operated on but was good enough to still come on the Friday night and operated the music. This then freed up the programmer to dance in a set. We celebrated our 43rd birthday on the 18th March with Elva, Eddie and Kevin from Ulysses Club visiting. We all had an enjoyable night’s dancing and a delicious supper afterwards. Last month we welcomed Phil and Glenda Johnson from Texas USA and enjoyed meeting and dancing with this interesting couple. They presented the Club with a toy bear called ’Debbie’. They asked the Club to have the other Cairns’ Clubs sign an attached booklet and then hand ‘Debbie’ onto clubs to the south of Cairns. This we will do when possible. The idea is that after travelling around Australia ‘Debbie’ will eventually return back to them in Texas. That is all our news for this month until my next report in 2016. 2016 Caller / Cuer Conference Calling Queensland Callers, Trainees and would like to be Callers. Did you know that the Australian Callers Federation (ACF) is hosting a Caller Cuer Conference prior to the National Convention? Paul Bristow (UK), Ken Ritucci (USA) and Steve Turner (Australia) will be featured presenters. Qld. Square Dance Society is offering subsidies to callers/cuers who are the listed as Caller/Cuer for Society Affiliated clubs e.g. those that are listed on the club's affiliation form are eligible to receive $ 50.00 for full time callers and $ 30.00 for Trainee callers. Application forms are available from the Square Dancing Society, the QCA, or from the conference website: http://acfcallercuerconference2016.weebly.com To apply for this subsidy the caller is asked to forward to Society Secretary their receipt for payment to register to attend the Caller Conference. The Secretary will then forward a letter either advising of the acceptance or otherwise. If accepted then the letter will state required details e.g. their bank account so that the Treasurer can transfer the money.
