Social Responsibility Contract Pre-AP/Incentive Grade 9 Rationale: Besides being a place for academic learning, school is also where students become social beings in a larger community, and where they learn to contribute and take on leadership roles. Consequently, the Pre-AP/Incentive Program requires every Grade 9 Pre-AP/Incentive student to complete 25 hours of volunteer work within the school community or in the community at large. Com pleting this volunteer com ponent is a requirem ent of the Program , especially if the student wishes to be considered for a Pre-AP/Incentive Scholarship during graduation from Grade 12 at Palm er. Please refer to the reverse side of this form for more information and guidelines regarding this requirement. Upon completion of the volunteer hours, students are required to fill in this form and submit it to Mrs. Calaciura no later than May 30. If a Pre-AP/Incentive student does not complete all 25 hours of volunteer service by the end of Grade 9, he/she is required to complete the balance during his/her Pre-AP/Incentive Grade 10 year (and the remaining hours will be DOUBLED for Grade 10).
Because these 25 hours of volunteer service are accumulated during Grade 9, they do NOT count towards the 30hour work/volunteer experience required from Grades 10-12 for high school graduation. However, the 25 hours that you accumulate for this Pre-AP/Incentive requirement MAY be used towards the 30 hours needed to earn a school service award (certificate).
You may NOT: - perform the 25 hours of service at your parents’ or guardians’ place of business (unless that business is a non-profit volunteer or charitable organization). - use an activity where you are “volunteering” but are essentially raising funds for your own school or extra-curricular fieldtrip or for personal use or benefit. - perform all 25 hours at one organization or activity only (UNLESS pre-approved by Mrs. Calaciura).
You MAY: - earn hours volunteering with school service groups and other certain school-based activities (but these MUST be checked with Mrs. Calaciura to make sure they’re on the pre-approved list ) - earn hours doing volunteer work for the Pre-AP/Incentive Program - use up to 5 hours out of the 30-hour Famine - use hours that are accumulated through Griffins That Give
In general, you may use up to 10 hours only at any one particular volunteering activity (but this MUST first be approved by Mrs. Calaciura). This is because one intent of this Program requirement is for students to gain an appreciation of and experience with the many types of volunteering opportunities available.
If you are not sure about the eligibility of your volunteer activity, check first with Mrs. Calaciura. Submit your hours (and paperwork) as you complete them. Do not hold onto them and submit them all at the end of May, and DO NOT wait until near the end-of-year to start this volunteer requirement, otherwise you will put yourself into a time-pressured and stressful situation, or you may not be able to complete all of your 25 hours in time!
