" " " " " Instagram #LookAtMe! By Andrew Jenkins" You live in a really cool age...the age of technology. It is growing and advancing so fast it can barely keep up with itself...but it is your generation that completely gets it. You are the ones that are keeping this technology stuff alive." !" You can instantly connect with anyone across the globe in just a matter of seconds...you can tweet at them, you can Facebook message them (not

sure if you still use Facebook, most teens seemed to get off Facebook after their parents and then grandparents got on), you can snapchat with people, you can share pictures with others...you can just about communicate with anyone at anytime however you choose..." !" I gotta say though...out of all the social media apps out there, my favorite has to be Instagram.
 !
How many of y'all have an Instagram account? I do too... you can follow me @____________" !" As of September 2013 Instagram had 150million users..." !" Pictures are great for telling a story...One of my favorite things as a kid were those flip books that told a story..." each page was a different picture from a scene...and when flipped fast enough told a short story.
 !
Ever heard the phrase, “Pictures are worth a thousand words”?" !" Shortly after Instagram was started...there was a new craze that took “gramming" by storm!
 !
To date the #selfie has been used almost 70million times. The #selfiesunday has been used almost 6million times...And those are only the ones tagged as selfie... there are no telling how many actual selfies have been taken...like this one taken by Brett Thomas a couple of days ago." !" I wanna give you.."

!" 5 Rules for Taking Selfies:" !" 1. Selfies are off-limits for anyone over 21*
You are too old to go fishing for compliments with a self- portrait. Leave the selfies for Snapchatting teens who can use the word "ratchet" in a sentence without Googling "ratchet" and "urban dictionary" at the same time.
 !
 2. The following words and phrases are banned from selfie captions
 • "Bored"
 • "Studying"" • "Ready for bed"
 • "Good morning!"
 • "Hitting the gym"
 • "#GQ" (LOL)
 • "Work hard, play hard"
Essentially, ask yourself, "What would Kim Kardashian do?" Then do the opposite.
 !
 3. Use your selfie allotment sparingly
Selfies are like paychecks: If you're like most people, you only get two per month. You know that grid on your Instagram screen that only fits nine square thumbnails at a time? Your selfie-to-pictures-of-other-stuff ratio should be 1:8. Failure to comply gives your friends permission to mercilessly make fun of you.
 !
 4. Don't look stupid
No duck lips. No ironic peace signs. No fake sleeping. No lying down. No crying toddlers in the background. These kinds of things are nonnegotiable. Smile, if you're up for it. Failure to comply, again, gives your friends permission to mercilessly make fun of you." !"

5. Own up to it
Mirror pictures are allowed. You do, however, have to own up to what you're trying to accomplish by doing so. For example: "Check out my sick abs, guys" is more acceptable than "Lol my bathroom mirror is dirty" . Be honest. Honesty is good." !" I wanna tell you a short story about a guy who would have loved Instagram and the #selfie craze! According to ancient Greek myths there was a man named Narcissus." !" Narcissus was a very handsome young man. In fact, he was so handsome that he couldn't help but admire his own reflection in a pool of water. Avoiding personal relationships, he spent much of his spare time examining his features. Before he knew it, he had fallen in love---with himself. Narcissus loved the reflection in the pool so much that he would eventually die because he could not pull himself away even for a second." !" Narcissus sounds like a silly story to many people, but on a less drastic level many have become accustomed to a daily ritual of selfadmiration. This is where we get the term narcissism from, which is the fixation of yourself!" !" Now there is nothing wrong with posting the occasional selfie...and I’m not saying today that you are full of yourself if you post selfies. But there can be a danger behind Instagram and different social media sites." ! And here is the danger...the danger is that we let social" media become about us..."

!" The problem can be that you get so consumed about how you make yourself look on Instagram that we completely lose sight of God. We are so worried about how people will see us...we want people to know we just got a new car, that we went to that concert that nobody could afford tickets to, we want people to see the latest new piece of clothing that we got...and what starts to happen is that we buy into this ME ME ME mentality. And the problem with that is that it is the complete opposite of Christianity and what Jesus was all about..." ! Read Philippians 2:1-8.
 !
Jesus says, think of others...the world says, “look out for number one”
Jesus says, be Christ centered...the world says, “be self- centered"
 !
Jesus said it this way in Luke 9:23.
 !
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow
Me.” (Luke 9:23) Instead of “look at me,” the attitude should be, “I die to myself, so people can see that I am following Jesus.” When we become followers of Christ the Bible tells us in several places that we are to die to our old self...and that now we live a new life in Christ. And that new life is one that says, “It is no longer about me, but it is all about Him” “It’s no longer about looking at me, but it is about pointing to HIM.”" !" Social media should not be about building up ourselves and saying look at me, but rather it should be about HIM.! !
When thinking about people in the Bible who are self absorbed, I can’t help but think of a story that Jesus told in Luke 12 about a rather successful farmer, who had an amazing green thumb.!
 !
He had grown a crazy-good harvest and the time had come for him to collect the harvest and store it. Well, dude had a lot! In fact, he had more

than he knew what to do with. He didn't know where he was gonna store all of this excess...!
 !
Lets pick up reading in verse 18.!
 !
And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, and be merry.”!
And it doesn't take God long to respond to this guy...in verse 20, God calls the man a “fool” and goes on to tell him that he will die that very night.!
 !
Now there are several different lessons you can draw from this story, but here is a question...what was this guys problem?!" !" This guy was a little self-obsessed. Alright, he wasn't a little selfobsessed---he was EXTREMELY self-obsessed. He had a lot and he accredited his success to none other but himself. He was so focused on himself that he left no room or little room for God...and that’s what is so dangerous about this LOOK AT ME mentality...!
It draws attention away from God...Instagram is such an awesome tool, but when it becomes a magnifying lens for us to sit underneath---or even a mirror for us to examine ourselves in---there probably isn't a whole lot of room left for God.!
Before Jesus tells this story in Luke 12...he says something else that is pretty important for us to see when talking about focusing on us rather than HIM. Look at verses 8&9.!
 !
“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.”
 !
Jesus basically says, “If your life is all about bringing glorification to yourself...then don’t expect me to recognize you before the Father.”
 !

If you aren’t willing to acknowledge me through your Facebook, your Twitter or your Instagram...if" you aren’t willing to acknowledge me before others, then I won’t acknowledge you." !" So...what do we do? Do we only post Bible verses and pictures of the cross? Do we only post nights out with the youth group?
!" Probably not, so what do we do?" !" With the time we have left I want you to get in groups of ?? and talk about these questions:
 !
How do the things that I post on Instagram affect the way people see me? How do the people I follow on Instagram affect the way people see me? How do the pictures I like on Instagram affect the way people see me?" !" How can my Instagram activity point to HIM?" !" Here is the cold hard truth: YOUR ACTIVITY ON INSTAGRAM EITHER ACKNOWLEDGES CHRIST OR DENIES CHRIST.
!" I love Paul! One of my absolute favorite characters in the Bible. Here is Paul, this guy that has been persecuting Christians and thinks he is doing what is right...until one day Jesus meets him on the road. Jesus sets Paul straight...and from that moment on, Paul is changed!" !"

Everything that Paul did became about his Savior! Everything! If Paul had an Instagram account, he would have posted things like this:
!" @slave4Christ" !" 1. A Selfie with the hashtag #madeinhisimage" 2. A Picture of his church family everywhere he went" 3. He may have posted pictures of his beatings or" shipwrecks with the #forthesakeofthegospel" 4. A picture of the road to Damascus #tbt" #blindbutnowisee" 5. Pictures of Baptisms" 6. Livin' that jail life #prisonselfie with Silas photo bombing" I love the way that Paul sums up his life:" !" Paul wrote, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20) Instead of “look at me,” that attitude should be, “I no longer live, it is Christ who should be seen in me.”" !" Paul could say, “My life says look at Him!"" Does your Instagram account say #LookAtMe or #LookAtHim?"

" What does this mean?-------YOU HAVE A CHOICE!!!" " " " "

1. INFLUENCE - HOW WILL IT EFFECT OTHERS?! A. In our life we forget how much our actions effect other people.! 1. In making good decisions I need to ask, will this effect others?! 2. The world says, take care of number 1 and forget about everybody else.!

"

Rom. 14:12,13 - So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." 3. We are going to be judged according to how others react toward us.!

Matthew 5:13-16! "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." 15 "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand,

and it gives light to all who are in the house." 16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." High Potency + Close Proximity = High Impact"

"

High Potency " - “strong salt”" - A life that really is surrendered to God" - Strong beliefs, willing to state them" - A life that is always doing the right thing on display"

"

Close Proximity" - a willingness to get close to people, into their lives." - an attitude that says “watch, and I”ll show you.”"

"

High Impact" - people who will follow you in the right direction" - people who will want what you’ve got" - you’ll have an impact for God."

" " " " " What does this mean?-------YOU MADE A CHOICE!!!! " " " " 2. PURPOSE! Romans 12:1-2  - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.!   A. What are we to OFFER ? - BODILY DEDICATION (verse 1)"      1. How do people see you when your not around your Church Family?"      2. How are you perceived from the worlds perspective?" 2 Timothy 4:6 - I am already being poured out as a drink “OFFERING.”

And the time of my departure is at hand."      3. The Lord will come as a Thief in the night ...2 Peter 3:10"   B. What are we to AVOID? - WORLDLY CONTAMINATION (vs. 2a)" John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends."      1. The world today see Sacrifice more as survival."      2. Survival of the fittest (2 Friend go spelunking/Bear Story).    "   C. What are we to ACHIEVE ? GODLY TRANSFORMATION (vs. 2b)"      1. A Sacrifice isn’t A Sacrifice, unless you give something up. 2. There is a wrong way of doing things. (Annanias/Saphira, Acts 5)" 1 John 3:16-18 (ESV) - By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."      3. Transformers [More than Meets the eye]. What does this mean?---YOU MUST LIVE WITH YOUR CHOICE!!!! If needed - John 10:22-30. The good shepherd. ! Remember that Jesus is your friend on Facebook! 3. ACCOUNTABILITY" Romans 12:6-8  - Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness."   A. Have you ever messed up?"      1. Did you ever do anything wrong?"

"

     2. We have to be accountable to our Lord...offering, worship, service." 3. We must be the same person on this side of the screen as the other. (People say bad words and post stuff that they would never say or post in person.)" Ephesians 4:15-16 - ...speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love."   B. Spiritual gifts are not just given to church leaders, but to all believers.
   C. Gifts are given to followers of Christ for two purposes:
      1) To serve one another .
Galatians 6:2 -Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ          a. We are to watch out for one another & help each other. b. We are to be each others big brother or big sister...”ROLL the Gospel Chariot“
      2) To demonstrate God ’ s love to the world .
John 13:35 - “ Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."
   D. Our combined gifts are more effective than our individual gifts.
      1. Using our gifts together brings glory to God. (1 Peter 4:11)"      2. The bottom line is simply this: where social media is concerned..." Be the same person on both sides of the screen, or you will lose any credibility that you had built up. "

A LESSON ABOUT TWITTER!

"

JEREMY HINOTE — GULF 2014!

What does God truly want us to hear? What does he want us to know…" 1.You Need Jesus. Jesus desires to be the Savior of your Soul, the Leader of your Life, your guide and your friend. Without Him, your life will never be what God intended it to be. With Him, you can experience all God has for you. Jesus came to make you alive! " “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6! In our lives we try to make our own path….we try so hard to do it on our own…we try to go through life being able to say that we’ve never needed anything from anyone…" But God says….you do need one thing…and that one thing is my SON… and the only way to me is through him…God would tell us that We need Jesus…and he would want us to know because he knows that Jesus can save our souls….! 2.You are a Masterpiece. When we look ourselves in the mirror…do we really see a Masterpiece? Do we really see what God sees in us when he looks at us? For some of us we cring and shy away from looking in that mirror because of the things we have going on in our lives…when we look into the mirror we see the sin that is there…we see how gross sin has made us look….we just don’t feel like a masterpiece do we?" You might not feel like a Masterpeice, but how you feel doesn’t change who you are! God’s sees you as a one-in-a-trillion priceless Masterpiece created in His Own Image. The Mona Lisa has got nothing on You! " 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation…" “10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 ! God says…You Are my Masterpiece!!!"

3.You are Forgiven. Once you give your life to Christ through belief, repentance, confession and baptism, your sins are no longer counted against you, so don’t live in regret! " You are not defined by what you’ve done. God never measures our value by what we’ve done or by what’s been done to us, but by what He has done for us on the Cross. " God’s takes away our sin and makes us a New Creation so we can live in freedom and peace. " Rom 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." “if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” 1 John 1:9! God wants us to know…You are forgiven!!" 4.You are not Alone. Being alone is one of the scariest feelings that we could ever experience in this life. We attempt many things to not have to be alone…we’ll jump into relationships…we’ll hang around bad influences even though we know they’re bringing us down…we’ll change our convictions and beliefs….we’ll even loosen the strings of our integrity….all for the sake of not being alone…" We all have those moments where we feel lonely and abandoned, where we feel like no one else is there….that all hope is slowly escaping our grasp….but even in your darkest hour, even in the worst of worst….God is with you. He has never left your side and He never will. " “…God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  Hebrews 13:5" We can have comfort….we can have confidence…We can have assurance that God is there walking by our side…minute by minute…day by day… every moment that goes by….At work or at school…with the church or with our family….he is there!!!" What a relief it is, to know that I’m not alone….! 5.You have a Home in Heaven. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get to Heaven. And it’s not just so that I can escape the heart ache, and hurt, and guilt, and strife….and when I see others around me hurting as well….even though I can’t say that that’s not one reason

why I can’t wait…But, to get a chance to be with Jesus…to finally be with my Lord…my savior…my redeemer….and it’s those thoughts that make me want it more and more each day…" Jesus is preparing a place just for you. A perfect place awaits where the trouble and pain of this life will be no more and you’ll celebrate forever with your Savior and all of God’s Family! “" “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:1-3" 6.I LOVE YOU!!!! For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 (ESV)" "God says, "I will always love you and it is unconditional. You don't earn it."! God says you're lovable.  This is so important because you can't fulfill God's commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself" until you believe this. If you don't feel lovable, you can't love anybody else.  " This verse in Isaiah says a couple things about God's love for us." • God loves you consistently -- He doesn't love you one day and not the next.  He doesn't love you on your good days and not on your bad days.  A lot of you grew up with inconsistent love. One lady told me, "Growing up, I didn't know whether I was going to be hugged or slugged. My parents were never consistent." "

" God isn't like that. God is 100% consistent in his love for you and me." " "

• God loves you unconditionally -- He says, "My steadfast love shall not depart from you”.  You don't earn it." He doesn't say, "I love you if you're good, or I love you if you do these things, or I love you because you look this way or you do these things."  "

" What if you were unable to fulfill the condition?  Then all of a sudden you're not loved anymore."

"

But God says, "I don't love you like that." He says, "I love you consistently and I love you unconditionally." " You never have to wake up in the morning and say, "God, are You going to love me today?  Did I read my Bible enough?  Did I pray enough?" " He loves you consistently no matter who you are or what you do. " But, what is the result when you really understand this? " Daniel 10:19 says " And he said, “O man greatly loved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage.” And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”" That's a comfort to me. When I don't have to worry or be afraid of anything, then I am free to give love to everyone around me. " You see Giving Love is exactly what God himself showed for us…and he did this by allowing himself to give up his own son, for us…." John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." God wants us to know, that…" We Need Jesus" You are a Masterpiece" You are forgiven" You are not alone" You have a home in heaven" And that He loves us!!"

USING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR GOOD" By Eric Gray"

" " Focus: Ways we can positively use the internet & social media" " " Until around 2004, you never heard much about Social Media. But then the craze for Myspace began. Oh yea, I had one. My favorite song(s) that played in the background when you loaded my profile. No one knew much about social media, so no one really knew how to use it right."

"

For the last 10 years, Social Media has become so integrated into our lives that we would rather not eat for a week than delete our profiles. We check them multiple times a day. Constantly refreshing. Uploading. Posting. Liking. Following. Unfollowing. Commenting. "

" My 4 year old recognizes Facebook." "

Want to know how important social media has become? The Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year for 2013 was “selfie”. It was chosen as Word of the Year because of how much it has been used. While selfie tends to make us think of selfishness, it doesn’t mean there isn’t good being done through social media."

"

And while the news companies (and maybe even your parents or grandparents) have made a lot to do about all of the negatives that can come from Social Media, there are so many positives that can come and have come from Social Media. "

"

Today I want to share with you some positives that have been and are being done with Social Media, and then I want us to dream a little bit and brainstorm some ways we can positively use Social Media."

"

By the way, when I say Social Media, I’m talking about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, Path, Pinterest, Circle, Tumblr, Myspace, and Youtube. Any that I missed there?!"

Minddrive Students! ◦" This past May, a group of high school students from Missouri who are involved in an after-school program called Minddrive — a non-profit that inspires at-risk teens by focusing on electric car design — built a car fueled entirely by social media. The teens restored an older car and programmed it to be powered by social media interactions like hash tagging #Minddrive on Twitter and Instagram, liking their Facebook page and watching their Youtube video. The students then used all of the social fuel they accumulated to drive from Missouri to Washington D.C. in order to meet with elected officials to raise awareness about the benefits of this innovative kind of education."

POSITIVE WAYS WE CAN USE SOCIAL MEDIA:" ! •! Encouraging others! " ◦" Post positive comments on their Insta pictures, send encouraging verses & quotes to others through text, snapchat." DISCUSSION:! What are some ideas that you guys have? What are some ways you have used social media for good? What are some ways that you believe you could use social media for good? Let’s dream and brainstorm for a minute.!

" " "

TWO WORDS TO ALWAYS REMEMBER ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA:" " •" Public & Permanent" " ◦" Keep it clean." " ◦" Don’t trust privacy settings."

" "

CONCLUSION" Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all of the other social media sites are tools that can be used for God’s glory. So much good has been done and could still be done using each of them. The question is, what good will you bring about using them? "

"

Will you encourage others, stand up for what is right, teach the gospel and spread the Word of God? "
