Public Forum on the “Special Needs Trust” Date: 7 June 2018 (Thursday) Time: 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. Venue: Stephenson Harwood, 18/F, United Centre, 95 Queensway, Hong Kong Parents of children with special needs may be concerned that after their passing, the care for their children would be upset. The results of a recent questionnaire survey conducted by the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong in conjunction with the Concern Group of Guardianship System and Financial Affairs showed there is an urgent need to establish a safe and reliable asset management mechanism for individuals with special needs. The HKSAR Government has recently responded to parent demands as reflected in the survey. The Chief Executive’s policy address last year announced the government’s plan to establish a ‘Special Needs Trust’ (SNT) to provide trust services for families with special needs. The Budget released earlier this year also set aside HK$50 million to set up a dedicated office for this purpose. It is expected that the SNT will be launched by the end of 2018. To help the public understand the SNT, the present Forum will explain the legal framework, operational details, and challenges of the proposed SNT. Parents, special school teachers and social workers, medical social workers, social workers from Integrated Family Service Centres, and all those concerned about people with special needs are invited.

Speakers: Prof Lusina Ho & Asso Prof Rebecca Lee, Faculty of Law, HKU Online registration: https://tinyurl.com/yde78lu6 Enquiries: Ms Lydia Bute ([email protected] / 3917 2951)

The Forum will be conducted in English. All are welcome.
