Natasha Barrett studied in England for masters and doctoral degrees in electroacoustic composition, after which, in 1999, she moved to Norway. Since then her work with sound has expanded to encompass soundart, sound-architectural installations, interactive techniques, collaboration with experimental designers and scientists as well live performance and improvisation. She says: “Although computer and digital technologies are my core tools and sometimes the technology stimulates ideas and becomes the focus, most of the time I find technology is just a tool to realise ideas in sound. Technology has changed so fast over the past 20 years and will obviously continue to do so, yet art has a slower sense of evolution, which although connected to changes in both technology and society, has a timeless aspect long after technology has become retro. For me, science, the organsiation of society and culture are more significant driving forces. I’m interested in listeners hearing and feeling

Skandināvija, 2006), Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Awards (France 2001, 1998 & 1995), Concours Luigi Russolo (Itālija, 1995, 1998), Prix Ars Electronica (Austrija, 1998).

conception and approach to his instrument, the music and space changed. He is now considering the guitar more like a battery, an organ, a modifiable instrument deployable at will. Through a mix of actions on the instrument and a play of foot on effect pedals, taking inspiration from the technique of Tap Dance, it completely opened the possibilities, sound and physical environment of the instrument. This results in a practice where body is engaged to its fullest. Now evolving between sound art, performance and contemporary improvisational music, his work today is centred around all the questions that exist within a stage space, through body, space, sight and light, but where the sound remains the central pillar. Julien is also a co-founder of the Collectif Coax, a music cooperative based in Paris and created in 2008, which was recently labelled “Compagnie Nationale” by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. He’s also played with Charlie Haden, Mats Gustafson, Louis Sclavis, Tortoise, Han Bennink, Rob Mazurek, Jef Parker, Frank Vaillant, Noël Ackchoté, David Grubbs.

— Under the moniker of Varg, Jonas Rönnberg runs a cunning operation. Covert transmissions, alongside penetrating statements from techno’s core, are stacked adjacent to self-assertive live performances with an agility and depth of focus rarely summoned so instinctively. With a still-rising presence, Jonas Rönnberg makes sense of the decadent overdose privy to underground musics at this time. And producing work on his own prolific schedule, his barelycontrolled chaos isn’t stopping to check that you’ve noticed.

Tempering a caustic rhythmic sensibility with a pneumatic palette for high definition synthesis, Rönnberg’s unique embrace of risk tests the reliability of the forms he works in as well as the genre borders he surveys. His crucial techno releases on Semantica Records are a beacon amongst his engulfing ambient side projects such as D.Å.R.F.D.H.S., not to mention the persistent after-image of his black metal roots. Presiding over Stockholm’s Northern Electronics label with Abdulla Rashim, Rönnberg casts a cryptic shadow from the North over contemporary aesthetic platforms in club musics as well as the long arc of experimental music practices. The latter is best understood in terms of the collaborative pact with Copenhagen’s Posh Isolation, which has most notably given rise to Body Sculptures, a group that brings Rönnberg together with Loke Rahbek, Puce Mary, and other unique voices in European electronic music today.

Ankersmit has long-term collaborations with New York minimalist Phill Niblock and Italian composer Valerio Tricoli. His music is released on the Touch and PAN labels. Acoustic phenomena such as sound reflections, infrasonic vibration, otoacoustic emissions, and highly directional projections of sound play a central role in his work. His work has been presented at venues such as Hamburger Bahnhof and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Kunsthalle, Basel; Tate Modern, London; Serralves Museum, Porto; MoMA PS1, New York.

Perhaps the most notable shift was in Rowe’s approach: his playing grew increasingly subtle, and was often described in painterly terms, as though he were offering a canvas for the other musicians to color. Later collaborators have included saxophonist Evan Parker, cellist Rohan de Saram, and clarinetist Ian Mitchell. Christian Wolff also returned as a collaborator for a concert at the Conway Hall in London in 2001. Prévost has reported that of all their collaborators, Parker and Wolff best grasped the AMM aesthetic.

music beyond the boundaries of conventional jazz, as part of a larger movement that helped spawn European free jazz and free improvisation. Pianist John Tilbury – previously an occasional AMM collaborator – joined in about 1980. His shimmering Feldmanesque playing brought a measure of conventionality to AMM (relatively speaking); unlike Rowe or Prévost, Tilbury’s instrument was nearly always recognisable in conventional terms. This version of AMM generally explored quieter, more meditative sounds, perhaps having more in common with minimalism—though they could generate a cacophonous racket when so inclined. Of this period, one critic has noted that “their ability, after more than 35 years as a functioning unit, to avoid

To view familiar musical forms from a different perspective and venture into new terrain is at the heart of Nordic Affect’s music making. They got together in 2005, shortly after completing their studies in historical performance and it was from the very beginning clear to them that they wanted to combine new compositions with the music of the 17th and 18th century. For them this comes as a natural reaction to the vibrant musical life of Iceland, where music from ancient manuscripts is being rediscovered at the same time as new compositional computer software is being developed. Their discography can be found on Deutsche Grammophon, Bad Taste Records, Musmap and Brilliant Classics labels. Furthermore, their work has earned them international recognition namely a nomination for the Nordic Council Music Prize.

industrial subculture movement, Sturm, released the first STROPS CD – “Slepenie Rotaļlaukumi” (Secret Playgrounds), which marked the beginning of the project’s most active period. At this time, neighbour and schoolfellow, Juris Kirilovs (Arkls), was invited to participate, and the records which were created together with Kirilovs were very experimental, drifting between different genres starting from dark ambient and 90s industrial to drum’n’noise and power electronics. STROPS last album was released in Germany using only George Trakl’s (1887-1914) poetry. In a ritual performance in 2008, a personal computer with all of the project’s files was buried, and STROPS cased to exist. In this year’s Skaņu Mežs, STROPS will not reincarnate but will rather transform and create a retrospective of past records.

(contrabass), Edgars Rubenis (electric guitar) and Elizabete Lāce (harp). By analyzing the spectrum of soundwaves, the composer arranged the instruments in such a way that lets the listener get an intimate experience of each sound, and hone in on minute details. This arrangement creates the piece’s structure, in which the instability of the sounds interchanges with harmonies. The overtones of the harp, heard in the intro and the coda, were orchestrated specifically for the ensemble and which, resting on the piece’s structure, grow into an arc connecting the piece’s first and final notes.

tion course at Jāzepa Vītola Music Academy in 2013 and later graduated under Jānis Petraškēvičs. Ķirse currently works with both academic and independent music and also composes soundtracks – the artist is primarily interested in the fusion of academic and electoraccoustic music. In the summer of 2016 Ķirse finished working on the multimedia installation, Koka opera (Tree Opera), which premiered at the Sansusī music festival in the middle of a forest clearing. A second part is currently in production. Parallel to her work in music, Ķirse works with modern opera as the creator and organizer of LULU – a project aimed to introduce contemporary opera to audiences. When she composes, she often collaborates with specific musicians with whom she explores the acoustic possibilities of each individual instrument thereby creating a very conscious and specific score. Her work is influenced by electronic music and underscored by a wish to push the boundaries of what acoustic instruments can do. During Skaņu Mežs Ķirse will premiere her piece Artifex Auditionis, conducted by Artūrs Gailis and performed by Nadīna Zapacka and Alisa Klimanska (flute), Jānis Porietis (trumpet), Jānis Tretjuks (bass clarinet, clarinet), Arvīds Zvagulis (violin), Pēteris Trasuns (alto), Ēriks Kiršfelds (cello), Viktors Stankevičs

stona pieteiktajām mūzikas organizēšanas sistēmām un to pretstatīšanai Eiropas brīvās improvizācijas tradīcijai.

Cellist Daniel Levin has been called “one of the outstanding cellists working in the vanguard arena” (All About Jazz), “ridiculously fluent, virtually overflowing with ideas” (New York City Jazz Record) and “very much the man to watch” (Penguin Guide to Jazz). Elements of European classical music, American jazz,

microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in his unique sound. As critic John Sharpe observes in The New York City Jazz Record, “he invokes all manner of musics with prodigious skill: jazz, classical, improv, noise, vocal chorus. His technique is unquestioned and he revels in the physicality of the instrument. Those with an adventurous streak or interest in the outer reaches of the cello universe will find much to savor.” Born in Burlington, Vermont, he began playing the cello at the age of six. In 2001, he graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory of Music, and arrived on New York City jazz scene shortly therafter. Since then, Daniel has developed his own unique voice as a cellist, improviser, and composer. Ed Hazell noted upon release of Levin’s first record as a leader, “Cellist Daniel Levin is a major new voice on his instrument and in improvised music.” http://www.joe-morris.com http://daniel-levin.com

Joe Morris / Daniel Levin Joe Morris is an uncompromisingly original guitarist following in the tradition of other conceptual free jazz guitar innovators like Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, Eugene Chadbourne, and James Ulmer. However, Morris developed his own unique approach to guitar playing, composition, and improvisation which is unlike his peers. He usually incorporates a clean tone of the bebop lineage for his single-note-driven improvisations, although his intonation has become icnreasingly more varied during the past decade. Morris has been called „one of the most profound improvisors at work in the U.S.” (The Wire magazine) and “… the guitar revolutionary to pay attention to” (The Boston Phoenix). Morris is also an educator: though he is largely self-taught, he has been well received on the faculties at Tufts University Experimental College, the Longy School of Music of Bard College and, for the past 15 years, the New England Conservatory.

“Es nespēju to saprast.

augstāku līmeni un uzurpēt to. (..)

— The release date of Contact marks the ten-year anniversary of Margaret Chardiet’s project, Pharmakon. While working on her newest release, she began to evaluate the project as a whole. Though the content of each record has been very different and specific, the pervading question, which has underlined them all, is what is means to be human. Her last album, Bestial Burden, focused on the disconnect between mind and body, looking at the human as an isolated consciousness stuck inside of a rotting vessel. For Contact, she wanted to look at the other side of the spectrum – the moments when our mind can come outside of and transcend our bodies. Because an album is itself an object, she struggled with how to convey the transcendence of the physical, through a physical medium. She started to study trance states and equate her live performances to them. In trance

Dillon taught at Darmstadt from 1982–92, and has been a guest lecturer and composer at various institutions around the world. He taught at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota from 2007 to 2014. Shabazz Palaces šovasar laiduši klajā divus albumus: Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star un Quazarz Vs. the Jealous Machines.

[..] Batlera grupa allaž bijusi šokējoši unikāla.”

decided to structure the compositions of each side of Contact after the four stages of trance: preparation, onset, climax, and resolution. By using these stages as a biorhythm for the album, she animates it, and instills the intention of communion into the music.

states, music and the body are used to transcend the physical form and make contact with some outside force. Jlin jeb Džerilina Elizabete Petona sākotnēji piesaistīja uzmanību ar savu skaņdarbu Bangs and Works footwork izlasē 2011.gadā.

— Jlin first came to public attention featuring on the Bangs and Works footwork compilations at the start of the decade. Her debut album on Planet Mu - „Dark Energy” - displayed a unique creative talent that outgrew any easy genre tags, placing her in her own musical zone of hyper rhythmic cuts that displayed a tension between anger and colourful euphoria. Embarking on a world tour soon after the album release she grew a reputation as a formidable live act, and the album ended up in the top 10’s and 20’s of album lists for 2015 for lots of music publications. In 2017 she follows up

gathered positivel feedback; Pitchfork, for instance, wrote the following: „Gangster Star and Jealous Machines are essential counter-programming against the indoctrination of the screen-based economy—and a refreshing example of art and expression wholly unconcerned with convention.” Before the two albums’ release, Rolling Stone magazine named them among the 24 most anticipated rap albums of 2017, adding that „Shabazz Palaces are responsible for some of the most strangely alluring hip-hop of the 2010s”.

by the enigmatic, Seattle-based project, but that didn’t stop the local press from throwing praise at these EPs, which hit much harder than Digable while retaining that forward-thinking wordplay. The EPs became favorites at the Sub Pop offices, too, and in 2010, the usually indie rock label signed the project, releasing their debut album, Black Up, in 2011. Next, it transpired that Tendai Maraire — son of the famous mbira player Dumisani Maraire — was responsible for most of the instrumentation on that record and that Shabazz Palaces was, in effect, a duo. In 2014 they published a second Shabazz Palaces studio album, Lese Majesty. Three years later, in 2017, they returned with two further albums, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs the Jealous Machines; both albums chronicled the journey of Quazarz, a celestial being trying to navigate the harsh reality of life on Earth. Both Black Up and Lese Majesty were named among the „50 Best Albums of the Year” in 2011 and 2014 respectively, with Lese Majesty, being the most abstract of the two recordings, attracting also the attention of experimental music audiences and being named in a similar year-end-best-album list by The Wire magazine. The two recently released albums of 2017 have also

her debut with a new album due out in the first half of the year. Patton was raised in Gary, Indiana, United States. Growing up, she was exposed to music through her parents, and her favorite artists were Anita Baker, Rachelle Ferrell, and Sade. She also heard footwork at an early age. Patton began making her own music in 2008, and was inspired by her mother to pursue a unique sound. She also received encouragement from figures such as DJ Rashad, who she communicated with online. After making the track Erotic Heat, she was hesitant to release it because it did not fit the conventional sound of a footwork song. The track was ultimately released on Planet Mu’s Bangs & Works, Vol. 2 compilation in 2011, which showcased Chicago juke and footwork artists and brought Jlin attention. The song was later used to accompany a 2014 Rick Owens fashion show. She released her debut album Dark Energy in 2015 to critical acclaim. Dark Energy would help to popularize footwork on a global stage. In 2017, Jlin released her second album Black Origami. It features collaborations with William Basinski, Holly Herndon, Fawkes, and Dope Saint Jude.

Russian-born Anastasia Vtorova a.k.a. Machine Woman is a sound artist and image maker who often collaborates with other artists. Her works are inspired by late night listening to the sounds of down beat minimal electronica along with melancholic cinema from all over the world. She sets what has been defined as “waltzing the line between techno and avant garde”. Since 2014, there have been releases on Tesla Tapes, WTN?, Peder Mannerfelt Produktion as well as contributions to Sacred Tapes and low income $quad. Her work has begun to gather notable attention, having been highlighted in Fact Magazine’s ‘10 house & techno producers to watch in 2016’. November 2016 saw the beginning of Take Away Jazz Records, Vtorova’s own label the output of which she characterizes as “music for people who can’t sleep at night and are perhaps quite fond of mundane, abstract collages”. She has recently been offered a regular show on Berlin Community Radio as well as contributing a bi-monthly podcast to Bristol’s Noods Radio. Vtorova is currently working on a number of remixes and new material. Machine Woman is a fan of audio books and the Baltic Sea. She is an artist of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe.

At Skaņu Mežs, Kronlaks will be performing his electroaccoustic cycle, Akusmātika. “I composed this cycle, which consists of multiple parts, with the French masters of musique concrète in mind. The word “acousmatic,” which comes from the ancient Greek, akousmatikoi, is often used in the context of musique concrète. It denotes sound where the source is obscured. This is also reflected in the way in which musique concrète is traditionally performed as technical equipment is often used in place of visible live performers on stage. The masters of musique concrète opened up the magical nature of noise to the world by creating sound objects and musical structures using everyday sounds, sounds from nature, and other

— Roscoe Mitchell is born in Chigago, Illinois on 3 August 1940. Internationally renowned musician, composer, and innovator, began his distinguished career in the spirited 1960s of Chicago, Illinois. His role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, his innovation as a solo woodwind performer, his and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over four decades. Moor Mother

— Moor Mother is the viscerally charged output of Philadelphia based interdisciplinary artist, Camae Ayewa. Her music is often harsh and strange, projecting both the cathartic anger of punk and the expansive improvisatory spirit of Sun Ra. Using a variety of machines, field recordings, and analog noisemakers, Ayewa constructs fractured, cacophonous waves for her words of punishing pertinence to ride. She acquired wider recognition with album Fetish Bones that was released in 2016. The album is intended as a form of protest and as form of time travel — a collection of sounds that are events themselves, telling stories rich in history about the journey that brings us to today and the future we are creating. As a musician she has toured

As a soundscape artist she has had work featured at Samek Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art Chicago, and Everson Museum of Art. Fetish Bones works not just as an atlas and an archive but as a mausoleum, housing the bones of those who have fallen along a bloody trail stretching all the way back to 1886.”

emerge completely synergetic, offering up stunning improvisations that are as advanced melodically as they are texturally. The four pieces on Slant of Light are seductive and picturesque, with Lattimore’s elaborate melodies blossoming out of Zeigler’s tonal beds of synthesizer and guitar. Equally inviting and challenging, Slant of Light is an impressionistic work that draws on musical histories ancient and contemporary, existing outside current trends in music as a whole. There is nothing that sounds remotely like it. The strong and fast kinship between Lattimore and Zeigler is best understood in the context of their highly collaborative pasts. Lattimore has recorded and performed with Kurt Vile, Meg Baird, Jarvis Cocker, Wrekmeister Harmonies and Steve Gunn, to name a few, and her years touring with Thurston Moore inform some of Slant of Light’s noisier moments. Zeigler has played with members of Chris Forsyth’s Solar Motel Band, The War on Drugs, and A Sunny Day in Glasgow in his group Arc in Round. The contemplative, dynamic improvisations on Slant of Light reflect the collaborative ingenuity of musicians experienced in adapting their playing and sound to fit multiple contexts.

Merzbow / Balázs Pándi Merzbow is a Japanese noise musician, held as one of the most important artists in the field, and Balázs Pándi is a Hungarian drummer active in experimental metal, noise and free jazz. Masami Akita, better known as Merzbow, is a Japanese electronic music artist and composer, as well as a book writer and editor for various publications. Merzbow began in 1979 as a duo consisting of Masami Akita and Kiyoshi Mizutani, initially playing Industrial music, which was not well-recognized during their time. They began garnering recognition in The ’80s with their record label, Lowest Music and Arts, as well as its spiritual successor, ZSF Produkt, which released material produced by other industrial artists. During this era, the duo began producing recordings for

various international labels. In 1993, however, Kiyoshi left to pursue a solo career. As of the present time, Merzbow has released over 350 studio recordings. Merzbow’s music is a matter of debate among electronic music fans, owing to its highly experimental and abstract nature. He is frequently cited as an early pioneer of industrial music in the ’80s, alongside acts such as Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse. Due to this, he has gained substantial attention in underground electronic music circles, with many indie acts drawing inspiration from his works. However, he has also made forays into ambient-ish music and musique concrete. It is also arguable that he had a role in establishing/influencing the intelligent dance music (IDM) genre when it was still an unbuilt trope, before artists

like Autechre and Aphex Twin entered the spotlight. Since 2009, Merzbow often performs in duo with Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi, who has worked and toured with various acts from all around the world including Venetian Snares, Otto von Schirach, Last Step, To Live and Shave in L.A., The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and Zu. He also played drums for the Blood of Heroes project. His current projects include Italian doom band Obake, Metallic Taste of Blood (featuring Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, Eraldo Bernocchi of Obake and Jamie Saft), and Slobber Pup (Saft, Joe Morris and Trevor Dunn). He has also been playing solo shows at selected festivals under his own name since 2012. http://merzbow.net/

Those familiar with Oliver Ho’s fearsome and often brutal futurist early EPs on Blueprint and his more recent avant techno/house Raudive material will be aware of his ability to inject a dark narrative into functional electronics. The blank-stared, pin-pointfocused electronics and layers of noise betray no/ wave and post punk influences, dragging together industrial experimentation and pitch-black techno.

Porter Ricks is the sound project of Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig. by the Detroit-based label for new age and ambient music, Sounds of the Dawn. The music was inspired by BBC Earth nature documentaries, and written specifically for a one-act contemporary ballet performance at the Latvian National Opera. This fall it will be released on vinyl by Parisian label, Antinote. Sign Libra was selected as a participant of the Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal in 2016, becoming the first artist to represent Latvia at this event. Also in 2016, Sign Libra performed in New York at an ambient music show in the venue, Ambient Church, alongside Steve Hauschildt and Patricia. Sign Libra typically projects excerpts from documentaries or art films during her live performances, synchronizing them to her music in order to enhance the listening experience.

7 no festivāla programmā iekļautajiem mūziķiem pārstāv platformu SHAPE (Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe), kas veltīta novatoriskajai mūzikai un audiovizuālajai mākslai.
