ESC 2016-17 WEBINAR SERIES Fall 2016 Webinar 1: September 16, 2016 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Plays Well With Others: The Ethics of Interprofessional Collaboration Presenter: Sherry Sancibrian, M.S/CCC-SLP Description: Interprofessional collaboration has become accepted as an important component of educational and healthcare environments, with a positive impact on the quality of services provided. However, when different professionals work together, challenges often arise, such as poor understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the various team members, power dynamics, poor communication, and conflicts over differing approaches to intervention. Participants will review suggested competencies for ethical decision-making when working with others. This session will primarily focus on the code of ethics found in TAC 741, Chapter 22, subchapter D. Some ethical issues addressed in this presentation relate to both Texas law and the ASHA code of ethics (e.g., conflict of interest, delegation of tasks, accurate documentation, and remuneration).
Webinar 2: October 21, 2016 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Starting Out with Core Vocabulary: What and How? Presenter: Gail Van Tatenhove, M.S/CCC-SLP Description: This webinar explores the issue of using core vocabulary with two population groups: preschool students with various speech & language challenges, and students with severe cognitive and/or multiple impairments, including transition-level students. The webinar will answer the questions, “What words to use?” and “How to teach them?” The emphasis in the webinar is on four communication partner strategies for teaching core vocabulary: (1) modeling, (2) creating communication opportunities, (3) responding to communication attempts, and (4) asking appropriate questions.
Webinar 3: November 11, 2016 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Using Descriptive Teaching to Support Pre-Literate Students Using AAC Devices in General & Special Education Classrooms Presenter: Gail Van Tatenhove, M.S/CCC-SLP Description: This webinar describes the theory and practice of the Descriptive Teaching Model, an approach that focuses on the use of core vocabulary to define and talk about key concepts in classroom lessons in both the special and general education classroom. Descriptive teaching is used with students who are pre-literate or insufficiently literate to use spelling to communicate content-specific words in classroom lessons. The webinar describes the power and practice of Descriptive Teaching, along with a collaborative model for its use with special and general education teachers.
Webinar 4: December 9, 2016 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Language Therapy Strategies for Building Vocabulary, Language, and Discourse Skills with Students Using Robust AAC Systems Presenter: Gail Van Tatenhove, M.S/CCC-SLP Description: SLPs are trained to provide intervention in the areas of pragmatics/discourse, phonology, vocabulary, syntax and morphology. This webinar applies these traditional areas of language intervention with schoolaged and transition-level students using AAC systems. It addresses the issues of appropriate goals, modifications of traditional materials, and implementation of AAC-applied therapy techniques. A focus will be on a semantic networking approach for teaching vocabulary and building a cognitive structure for vocabulary retrieval. The intent of this webinar is to help SLPs who are NOT experts in AAC to become more comfortable providing services to school-aged and transition-level students using AAC systems.
Spring 2017 Webinar 1: January 20, 2017 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Speech and Language Assessment for English-Language Learners (ELLS) Presenter: Lynette Austin, PhD/CCC-SLP Description: This overview session will provide information regarding the process of second language (English) acquisition, and strategies for assessing the language of children who are not fluent speakers of English. Cultural diversity considerations for speech-language assessment will also be discussed. General strategies for culture-fair testing will be explained.
Webinar 2: February 17, 2017 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Dynamic Assessment for ELLs: Who, Why, and How Presenter: Lynette Austin, PhD/CCC-SLP Description: In this session we will discuss the importance of dynamic assessment as an evidence-based method to use in the assessment of speakers with limited English skills. The theory behind dynamic assessment will be explained, as well as “how-tos” for developing and using dynamic assessment tasks. Finally, procedures for interpreting and reporting on dynamic assessment outcomes to others will be presented.
Webinar 3: April 21, 2017 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Effective Intervention for English-Language Learners with Speech and Language Disorders Presenter: Lynette Austin, PhD/CCC-SLP Description: This session will provide a framework for designing effective, evidence-based intervention for ELLs. Appropriate therapy goals and objectives will be discussed, with emphasis on decision-making strategies for which language and communication areas to target. Engaging, meaningful, effective therapy strategies for this population will be presented
Webinar 4: May 12, 2017 (9 am – noon) 2.5 TSHA CEUs Title: Using Current Evidence to Plan Engaging and Effective Language Therapy Presenter: Mary Beth Schmitt, PhD/CCC-SLP Description: As the heterogeneity of children receiving language therapy in the schools expands, it can be challenging for professionals to identify and implement effective strategies for addressing the language and learning needs of their students. In this presentation, participants will learn current evidence specific to providing therapy in the public schools, explore implications for that evidence for a heterogeneous caseload, and identify specific therapy ideas and strategies they can use Monday morning to not only make therapy more fun, but more effective for promoting language growth.
