SJ Montgomery Elementary School Lafayette Parish School System Stephanie Robin, Principal Jenny Andrepont: Parent Engagement Contact Person School Mission Statement: I am learning today so I can lead tomorrow School Vision Statement: At SJ Montgomery we are creating a confident community of happy and healthy learners. At SJ Montgomery School, emphasis is placed on the belief that: • Students must come first in the development of a school. • The school, parents, and community must work together to achieve the most success in educating students. • All children can learn. Individual abilities, interests, and learning styles must be considered in the education of the students. Faculty and staff members, as well as community members, helped develop the mission statement. The mission statement and beliefs are reviewed annually and revised as needed. SJ Montgomery: SJ Montgomery Elementary is located in the southern section of the city of Lafayette, Louisiana on approximately 6 acres of land donated by Samuel Joseph Montgomery. The school was built in 1959 to accommodate 450 students. Today the campus houses 618 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The current ethnic composition is 55% African American, 33% White, 9% Hispanic and 3% Asian. Approximately 19% of our students have an Individual Accommodation Plan or an Individual Education Plan and receive special education or accommodations. Our school serves hearing-impaired students form a four parish area including Lafayette, St. Martin, Vermilion and Acadia parishes.

A committee consisting of SJ Montgomery faculty and staff and parents of SJ Montgomery students, have developed a parental involvement policy. This policy can be found on our school website. During the first PTO meeting in the fall of each school year, parents are informed of their right to be involved. They are also informed that we are a Title I school. A certain amount of Title I funds are put aside specifically for parental involvement. Parents invited to discuss use of these funds and will are given the opportunity to make suggestions. A Teacher/Student/Parent Compact is sent to each family. This compact explains each person’s role in the educational process so that all parties can understand the importance they have in this process. Parents are invited as members of the School Improvement Team and have the opportunity to make suggestions to the School Improvement Policy. Weekly newsletters (Tuesday Tidbits) are sent to parents. The newsletters inform parents of current events within the school community. Articles providing parenting tips are included. In addition, agenda books are assigned to all students as a daily form of communication. Parents are encouraged to read daily and express concerns/questions as well as monitor students’ progress. Parents are invited to be a part of the Lafayette Parish Parent Advisory Group that meets quarterly to discuss and share concerns with other parents of Title I schools. Workshops and conferences are held on various topics to offer support. Information concerning Louisiana State Assessments and Common Core Curriculum, benchmarks, and grade level expectations can be found on our school website through the link to the Louisiana Department of Education website. Information on state assessment results are sent home to parents as the school receives the information from the district or the state department. Parenting workshops are held on various topics. One workshop offered is on state standardized testing. This workshop also helps the parents to become familiar with the format of the test in order for them to be able to

assist their child. In addition, workshops are given by the classroom teachers on assisting parents to help their child with reading skills and mathematics through the numeracy and literacy picnic. An Open House is held in the fall of each school year to explain policies and procedures to parents. The classroom teacher explains his or her expectations for the students and plans for the class. Individual conferences are held on the annual Parent Teacher Day. In addition, parents are encouraged to make an appointment with the teacher as needed to discuss academic and/or social concerns. The school will provide school information to parents with Limited English Proficiency by enlisting the assistance of the community liaison for the English, Speech, and Foreign Language Department at the school board office. Telephone conferences are held for parents who are unable to attend meetings and conferences. School counselors provide assistance with parents who have low-level literacy skills. An interpreter is always available for group performances as well as individual meetings. We also have a television that is in our lobby that displays upcoming events and important information for our school. Parents volunteer in various ways assisting with tutoring, office/workroom help, the annual picnics, pictures, and library help, etc. S.J. Montgomery has a reverse mainstream Pre-K program. Pre-K students for hearing impaired and special education programs are serviced. The hearing impaired program services students from Lafayette, Iberia, Vermilion, Acadia, and St. Martin parishes. Students are referred to Montgomery from the Parent-Child Center of Lafayette Parish. An IEP meeting is conducted with a plan being devised by the teachers and parents. Three year olds normally attend three days a week. Four-year olds usually attend four days a week. Parent-teacher contact is frequent. Telephone conferences are held in addition to conferences at school as needed. The school administrators have an open-door policy in which parents can voice their concerns and/or share ways to better the school. Those concerns are taken under consideration on an individual basis. Parents have the opportunity to attend PTO meetings as well as serve on the board.
