Background This workshop is organized by the “Global Citizenship Education Center at National Chiao Tung University” (NCTU-GCEC) in Taiwan. The Center was founded in 2016 in collaboration with Professor Carlos A. Torres, a distinguished professor of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). The Center aims to become a leading institute focusing on global citizenship education in Asia. The mission of the Center is to develop pedagogical activities and research projects related to global citizenship education and to establish links among academics, teachers, public servants, NGOs and other interested parties in the practice of global citizenship in Asia. This international event is the first of a series of public speeches and in-depth workshops hosted by the Center annually with different topics and participants each year. This year, NGO leaders are invited to participate in the workshop. Other than the first day keynote speeches that are open to the wider public, the workshop sessions will only comprise a total of 25 to 35 participants and speakers. As participants are expected to come from a wide range of different countries, all speeches and workshop sessions will be conducted in English without translating into any other languages. Participants satisfactorily complete the workshop requirement will obtain a certificate from the Center.

Purpose 





To empower participants by learning new concepts of global citizenship education (GCE) and by sharing skills & experiences among NGO leaders. To promote understanding, respect and appreciation of differences in culture, religion, and race/ethnic groups. To contribute to the awareness of global warming and the protection of eco-system to create a



healthy and sustainable world. To counter against factors impeding human rights, egalitarianism, integrity, social justice, and peace. To exchange experience and to establish connections of NGOs among different countries.



All in all, to develop strategies and action plans by participatory learning and to facilitate NGOs’



global citizenship practices.

Application and Qualification  



Participation is by invitation or application. The submission deadline is June 25, 2017. All invited and applied NGO people who wish to attend this workshop need to fill an application form accompanied by required documents. The application form can be requested via e-mail [email protected] or can be downloaded through the website: globalcitizen.nctu.edu.tw; A complete application form should be sent to the above e-mail (Note: If sent by fax or regular mail, be sure to have it arrive us before the deadline). Applicants are expected to satisfy the following requirements:  At least three years of experience in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and a proven 



record of leadership. A will to share her/his experiences in NGO activities and to enhance the spirit of global citizenship. Capable of conversation in English: Be good at least in listening and spoken English. Note: The whole workshop will be implemented in English. (No translation will be provided)

Registration Fee and Grants 





A registration fee of US$ 250 (including workshop participation, welcome dinner, lunches & refreshments and a day tour to Taiwan’s GCE sites) is set for the duration of the workshop. Applicants may obtain grants from the organizer upon the quality of application and available resources accrued by the Center. Grant application: Two types of financial assistance may be offered to participants. The selection criteria will be based upon applicants’ background, NGO experience, and the significance of proposed content for sharing to others in the workshop (as stated by the applicant in the form).  Full grant: Including the support of return airfare (economy class with a set upper limit), accommodation (twin share) and registration fee.  Partial grant: Including the support of accommodation (twin share) and registration fee. Participants will be selected by a screening committee composed of NCTU-GCEC related members.

Main Components of the Workshop  





Keynote speeches: Three world-known scholars will address issues on global citizenship education. Workshops: Key issues on global citizenship education and NGO participation will be the main focus of all workshop sessions. Participants sharing workshops: Each accepted participant will present her/ his major NGO project relevant to global citizenship education and exchange ideas with others in certain sessions. Site visit: A tour to understanding the experiences relevant to global citizenship practice in Taiwan.
