GENERAL Unix
INFORMATION
Accounts
To use Unix you need to get a Unix account. These accounts are available from Academic Computing Services Information (AD 1001) from 09:3015:30, Monday-Friday. The account comes with a secret password that allows only you to use it and it should not be shared with others. Here's how to get a Unix account: •
New students—you may pick up your Unix account from Academic Computing Services (ACS) starting the 3rd week of classes.
•
Previously registered students—if you have not picked up your Unix account you may come to ACS at any time, during the hours mentioned above, to pick up your account.
•
Students who already have a Unix account—you will retain that ID as long as you maintain "admitted status", but you will have access to the systems only if you are registered for credit classes at SFU. During hiatus semesters access may be maintained through purchase of an External Account.
•
If you are on the SFU payroll, i.e. faculty or staff, a Unix account will be automatically generated for you and sent to the departmental assistant in your department.
•
If you require a Unix account for a visiting professor, project assistant, etc. contact ACS Information at 291-3234.
Refer to the "How To" handout A-3 Understand the Campus Cluster of Unix Computers for the availability of specific computers to you. Other "How To" handouts are available in Academic Computing Services (AD 1001). See the Handouts section of this brochure for more details. DO YOU QUALIFY? The computing services described here are provided by Simon Fraser University FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE of the students registered and attending classes, faculty, staff, and qualifying ACS external clients OF SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY 6

AVAILABILITY
Availability
The Unix service will maintain a two-hour service window on weekdays in the event sched uled maintenance is required. Most often this will affect only part of the service leaving other components intact. We expect scheduled hardware maintenance periods to be infrequent. Software maintenance will also occur during the service window. Occasionally, extensive maintenance will be required. This will be scheduled so as to minimize impact on services and inconvenience to clients. There will continue to be unattended mode operations. During these times mere will be no operator available at the central site to provide trouble line assistance, restore failed services, or to provide operator functions(see graph below).

Having trouble with your LAN (Local Area Network) connection? Contact the LAN administrator in your department. If your LAN administrator can't solve your problem, or is unavailable, call the Network Operations Centre (NOC) at 2914532.
SFULAN is an internetwork of computer networks. Presently over 1500 Unix stations, Macintoshes and PC's are connected to SFULAN. These connections allow for potential access to other computers within a department, other departments across SFU, other universities in British Columbia and even around the world. Access to shared network resources such as files, printers, and electronic mail is also possible. If you would like further information, want to get connected, or to find out how to make the most of the connection you already have, contact Doug Davey in Academic Computing Services at 291-4714 or via electronic mail: Doug_Davey@sfu .ca

Information on computerized access to library services
To join these mail groups, you must have a Unix ID or an electronic mail address. When you add your name to a group, you will begin receiving messages from that group. The frequency of messages will depend on the group, but will generally be fairly low—the intent is to inform you of important news, not overwhelm you. To add or remove your name from a group(s), log onto Unix and type the command m a i l l i s t T h e n t y p e " ] "for join or " r " for resign and give the list name (see above). Note that the list names are in lower case letters—Unix is case sensitive, therefore you must type the list name as it appears above.
