January, 2012

Sew Busy Quilt Guild The Sew Busy Quilt Guild was formed in September, 1995 by a group of women who wanted to share their love of quilts. We are a non-profit organization whose membership is open to all! Hi Quilters, Happy New Year! Welcome to the January, 2012 newsletter edition. This year try something new, challenge yourself, and have fun quilting!

From the President: I’m sad to report that Joan Hansen has resigned from the board. The guild appreciates all the time that is put in by anyone serving on the board. Joan needs to put her family in the forefront at this time and everyone understands this. I am sure all of us want to wish her well and let her know we will miss her at the board gatherings. She is always welcome to let us know if she is available in the future. Thank you, Joan, for your dedicated service. Suzette DuPont will be replacing Joan as membership chair.

UFO Reminder Gather them all up and bring them to the January, 2012 meeting. Publicly proclaim that you will get this project finished in the next 6 months. We will take a photo of your work in progress so we can document the before phase. (It also puts a little pressure on everyone to get to work because we have proof!) Bring your beautifully crafted, completed project to the June meeting so we can all ooh and ah, in admiration, and revel in your triumph.

Everyone who participates will get a gift from the guild. If you have questions, you can call Karen Brown at 725-1566 or email at [email protected].

Thanks to all who finished their “sows ear” challenge. It’s always a pleasure to see your creativity- you’re a talented group-and you proved that there is no such thing as an “Ugly” fabric. If anyone finished their challenge and was not at the December meeting- bring it in January and receive your thank you gift. Thanks again for keeping our meetings fun and interesting. As always, Joanne

Sit and Sew Nights are held the second Monday of each month from January to June at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville (Ottaviano Hall).

The doors open at 6:00 PM.

Members are always welcome to work on their own projects on these nights. Tables are available to baste quilts, as well as plenty of space for committee meetings, work on Block of the Month kits, etc.

Sit and Sews Nights

On Monday, January 9, 2012 Georgia Budzekia-Rogers will be demonstrating some ideas of what to do with charm packs and jelly rolls. Bring a note pad as everyone remembers things their own way so writing ones’ own notes makes it easier to remember. At the Sit and Sew on February 13th, Suzette Dupont will be teaching a workshop using Paper Piecing and Foundation piecing. Suzette will have a supply list available at the January meeting. Jean Quick will feature a fun class on a woven background at the April 9th Sit and Sew. You may recall this background was on a piece she did for the Sunflower Challenge. She will show this again at the January meeting so everyone interested can start planning for the perfect fabrics to experiment with this great technique. If you wish to do the entire pattern which includes the woven background technique and a great sunflower machine appliqué, Sandi Christman has a few patterns available at a reasonable price. More information at the January meeting! At the May 14th Sit and Sew, Hand appliqué will be taught by Joanne Gasner. Carolyn Washburn will show ladies how to Machine appliqué. There will be two 30-45 minute time slots so that all present can take advantage of both of the demonstrations.  There are many techniques for hand appliqué and Joanne will be using the freezer paper/rubber cement combination. Small pins, rubber cement, appliqué pieces, thread and other supplies will be available to share. You will need to bring a couple of 9"or 12" squares of neutral fabrics (muslin works well) for practice, sharp scissors, appliqué needles if you have them, paper and pencil for note taking.  Carolyn will be demonstrating basic machine appliqué techniques. It is easy, fast and fun to do; we’ll discuss stabilizers, stitches and more. Hand-outs will be available. She’ll have some samples, also. Bring your questions too. At the June 11th Sit and Sew Debbie Marshall will be teaching a mug organizer class. You will need 3 fat quarters (outside pockets, inside of mug, binding). Please bring sewing machine, marking tool, fabric scissors, and thread to match fabric, low loft batting, Velcro, and basic sewing supplies. Deb will have a sample to show closer to June, and can answer other questions (669-9441) you may have before the June sit and sew.

3 Meetings are held the third Monday of each month from January to June at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville (Ottaviano Hall). The doors open at 6:30 PM. Meetings will begin at 7:00 PM. Each meeting will have guild business and show and tell. In addition, each month there will be various other demonstrations and/or presenters. The March community project work session will begin at 6PM with pizza and salad. The June party will start at 6 PM and will include a covered dish dinner.

Kathie Greenwold Lecture and Workshop Monday, April 16, 2012 - Kathie Greenwold will be presenting her newest lecture, "Cleaning Up the Leftovers or What to Do With Your UFO's." Just like leftover Thanksgiving dinner fills your refrigerator, your UFO's fill your studio with clutter. This clutter is potential for new quilts, just like the leftovers become turkey tetrazzini! This lecture will include a trunk show of some of Kathie's UFO's that have been transformed and completed with suggestions for how you might take a fresh look at the leftovers lurking in your sewing room. Members are encouraged to bring your own UFO's that need completion so we can look at projects and come up with possible solutions for them. Saturday, April 28, 2012 - Full day workshop 9:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Members who attended Kathie's lecture at Empire QuiltFest loved Kathie's technique for monoprinting with gelatin plates and asked that we schedule a workshop so that's what we've done. Kathie will be teaching "Monoprinting on Fabric." Using Knox gelatin plates, we will print natural scenes and motifs on fabrics. A fun way to create images for your quilts from natural materials like fern leaves, blossoms, grasses, and commercial products that reflect our natural world. You will go home with individualized printed fabrics to incorporate in your quilts. For those of you who missed seeing Kathie's quilts using this technique, samples will be on display at the workshop sign up table in January. The cost of the workshop will be $15 for members and $25 for non-members. The workshop fee must be paid at the time of registration and is nonrefundable unless you find someone to take your place in the class. Guild members will have first preference with sign ups beginning at the January business meeting. The class limit is 20. If there are still openings by the March meeting, the workshop will be opened up to non-members. Contact Patti Muselbeck with any questions. A WORD FROM THE NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE

As many of you know, we will be looking to fill three positions to start in July, 2012. The new slate of officers/board members will be presented to the membership at the May meeting and will be voted on at the June meeting so the committee is beginning our search now. We need a Vice President to replace Linda Naple who will be moving up to be our new President. Mary Jo Brady will complete her years as our treasurer and Patti Muselbeck will finish her time on the Board. We are very appreciative of the time and effort all these ladies have given to the Guild and want to find replacements that will be able to ―fill their shoes‖. The Vice President will need to be someone who can ―play well‖ with the president and learn the job before moving into the President’s position at the end of the year as VP. The Vice President will also be the Program Chairperson, working closely with one of the Board members. Our new treasurer will be responsible for collecting money, writing checks, balancing the checkbook and making financial reports (approximately twice per year) to the Guild. The Board position will be a 3 year commitment of time and energy. All three positions offer great opportunities to help our Guild flourish and continue to welcome and share with newcomers (and older members) our love of quilting. We ask every member of SBQG to carefully consider if they would be a ―good fit‖ for one of these positions, and if you are interested, please speak to one of the Nominating Committee members- Mary Jo Brady, Nancy Frank, or Barbara Nigro.

4 SERVICE PROJECTS Hi everyone! As you are reading this, I have already made two trips to The QuiltBug in Esperence. The owner, Chris, has been gracious enough to act as our distributor for your lovely creations for the flood victims. She knows all the locations of the shelters (yes, they still are full of those who aren't in housing yet) and the Churches who are in close touch with those finally getting back in their homes with such a lot still to be done. We have finished and returned 15 quilts from tops that Chris gave us, along with your bags (and I mean lots of bags!) of fabric for quilters who lost their stash, and a few additional quilts, lots of pillowcases, and lots of personal supplies (shampoo, deodorants, etc.). Chris and the lovely ladies who help at her store are just in awe of your generosity. Thanks everyone! We also donated several large bags of new toys to the local Toys For Tots. Checks went to the Fulton Food Pantry, the Montgomery Food Pantry and Friday’s Table from the generous donations you gave at our October and November meetings. Lots of smiley faces again! And so we begin 2012! I know now that the long winter is setting in, you will be looking for things to keep you busy. Keep in mind our neighbors in the Schoharie Valley who are still struggling to get their lives in order and would appreciate more of our lovely quilts and pillowcases. Use up the odds and ends and scraps in your stash and make someone happy at the same time! You have until June to give me the finished projects - but if you can only do a top, I will find someone to finish - just give it to me by the April meeting. Remember to visit our Freebie Table for possible backings - and ask if you need batting - I have a little of donated batting left. I also have a few very easy patterns if you need hints to get started. Happy stitching! Jean Quick 518-762-1013 or [email protected]

SBQG Spring Retreat The SBQG annual retreat will be held on March 30th and 31st at the Shirley Luck Senior Center on East Main Street in Johnstown. We will arrive at 5pm on Friday and have our usual pizza/salad/dessert at 6pm. Hopefully, we will also have a quick show-and-tell. The work session ends at 9pm. On Saturday we will arrive at 9am with continental breakfast courtesy of the guild. Lunch is on your own whenever you wish. Some quilters order out and have lunch delivered. We will have our optional ―demo‖ at 1pm. More on that later. We end the day at 5pm. The entire weekend is only $15.00. I need your payment to assure you a space. Ladies– there are only 3 spots left! Contact me anytime at 883-8099 or [email protected]. Should be fun and you may just get some sewing done!! Carol Cownie

The Block of the Month group is moving forward into the New Year. We have September, October, November and soon December under our belt. This year’s theme has been "different techniques". What a creative bunch we are!! Each monthly block is more creative than the last and has piqued a lot of interest. Everyone is excited to see what the new BOM team has created. Many thanks to all who have charged up our creative juices and our BOM team is excited to see what's coming next!! The completed top (not necessarily quilted) is due at the September, 2012 meeting. Wishing you and yours a wonderful 2012.

The FQ Mystery Quilt Mini Group Challenge A challenge in quilting is good. It makes us learn and grow and explore "options". This year 5 separate groups answered the SBQG Fat Quarter Challenge and have met to pick the focus fabric and set up their own guidelines. Each must use the focus fabric that they chose in all the blocks and a fat quarter given to each member of the group in a minimum of one block. Block sizes, patterns, arrangements are entirely up to the

Looking Back

Empire QuiltFest was held on October 15-16, 2011 at Shenendehowa High School East, Clifton Park. It is with great pleasure that I thank everyone who participated in any way. The show went very smoothly and a majority of comments/responses about the show have been very positive and complimentary. I would like to especially recognize Olga Amico, Nancy Frank and Trina Zimmerman for their efforts on behalf of our guild. There were 212 quilt registrations, 11 subsequent withdrawals and 201 quilts exhibited. One hundred of those quilts were submitted for judging and 67 ribbons were awarded. Sew Busy Quilt Guild was well represented with 59 quilt registrations. The following members received ribbons for their judged quilts: Nancy Frank, Patti Muselbeck, Cathy Jo Rogers, Kathleen Wells, Mary Jane White, and Petrina Zimmerman Each of the member quilt guilds contributed items for three prize baskets to be awarded as follows:  Best of Show: This distinction is awarded by the quilt judge and is chosen from all quilts submitted for judging. Heidi Merrill; Gilded Majestic Blooms, was the winner!  1st time exhibitor: The Winner of this prize is selected by a drawing of all first time exhibitor's for the current show. Jane O'Clair; Kitties Dancing with the Stars and Dan's Tats, was the winner!  Show Committee Choice for Best Theme Quilt: Each member of the QuiltFest Show Committee selects their favorite of all the theme quilts. The results are tallied. Ann Gehres; Sewing Room Quilt, was the winner! Also, the Viewers' Choice Award was "A Primitive Garden" by Susan Reed. In addition to the beautiful quilts, there were 24 vendors at the quilt show with a wide variety of beautiful merchandise. Vendors were also given the chance to choose a “Vendor's Choice” quilt. Several Sew Busy Quilt Guild members received “Vendor's Choice” awards. Financial information for the show is not yet available as expenses are still outstanding. All records to this point indicate that it was very successful financially and the member guilds will be receiving show proceeds after the next meeting in March. Ceci VanDenburgh

Everyone in the guild would like to express our deepest thanks to Ceci VanDenburgh for her tireless efforts to make Empire QuiltFest, 2011 a huge success!!

Many thanks go out to the ladies who worked on creating the beautiful baskets raffled off at Empire QuiltFest, 2011. Due to their efforts our quilt guild realized $990. Also, thanks to the ladies who ―manned‖ the quilt booth and sold tickets. Our guild also offered an extra incentive to our guild members. For each quilt that was registered and for a member who helped create a basket– ten free passes were drawn for the show. In addition– anyone who worked at the show received a free pass. Our guild paid $266 for our member passes to the show. Also, Sandi Christman created a basket that was raffled off to those members who participated in the Theme challenge and brought them finished to the September meeting. Thanks Sandi!!! Lastly, I’d like to thank Olga Amico, my ―partner in crime‖, for helping me out with anything I asked of her concerning the guild table set up and all other aspects of the raffle baskets!
