Read Matthew 28:19-20. What were Jesus’ last orders to the disciples? What does this indicate about their importance?

When a person becomes a Christian, he is baptized with the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:11, John 3:5, Rom. 8:9, Gal. 3:24). This baptism is a one-time, complete action occurring at conversion (1 Cor. 12:13, Eph. 4:5). Since the Holy Spirit lives within the believer we are to continually be controlled by the Holy Spirit so we can live the kind of life that honors God. However, the Bible talk also about a baptism of water that is to show others that we have entered into a new way of life. Peter said, “Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water?” They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Acts 10:47

1. What is baptism with water? Read Romans 6:3-4, Colossians 2:12
It is a symbol of death to an old way of life and resurrection to a new way of life. It also represents Jesus’ death and resurrection. Just as a wedding ring signifies commitment to a spouse, baptism demonstrates you are a follower of Jesus Christ.
2. Read the following verses and note the New Testament pattern regarding baptism? Acts 2:41 –
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why wouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. Acts 8:36-38
