GETTING STARTED: 1. What about the message challenged you, encouraged you or made you think more deeply?
3. Phil described a list of 6 little “g” gods that we grew up with and may have left behind. (See list from sermon notes) Is there one or more of these that describe the way you have related to God in the past or still relate to Him now? These “gods” are based on expectations we put on the true God. What unfulfilled expectations or disappointments have you experienced as a result of believing in one of these little “g” gods? 4. Read Mark 9:14-29. This story surfaces a lot of questions, but zoom in on verse 24. What did the father of the child say to Jesus? How did Jesus respond to this request? Why is that prayer still appropriate for us to pray today?
2. Where did your view of God originate? To what extent do those influences continue to shape how you view God?
DIGGING IN: (discussion) Everyone has religious doubts. Certain things about God are unsettling. Our circumstances can make God seem distant or vengeful. Science can make God seem unnecessary. Those doubts can cause us to abandon faith. But maybe our perspectives are wrong. Maybe the gods we abandon never existed to begin with. 1. What are some ideas or Bible stories that have created doubt in your mind and caused you to distance yourself from Christianity? (this isn’t meant to create debate, just an opportunity to voice a doubt or question) 2. During the message, Phil said that the choice between God and science is a false alternative and that, “If everything were explained and explainable, it would not explain away God.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
