Ringing In The New Year I hope everyone had a Blessed Christmas and will have a Happy New Year!

Most of us think of traditions when we end a year and make resolutions for beginning a new year. Traditions bring families together, are fairly predictable, cause stress to “do it right,” and leave us looking forward to the next gathering. There is comfort and joy in our traditions. Over time, traditions change. It is not easy, but it signals another stage of life - and the beginning of NEW traditions. How exciting that can be - a new baby in the family, a new job, a new location, a marriage, a new friend - a new SISTER. Alpha Delta Kappa has a strong foundation set by our founders: Agnes Shipman Robertson, Marie Neal, Hattie Poppino, and Marion Southall. Over the years our traditions have developed as we celebrate our founders’ vision for our organization. At all levels, we have ceremonies and procedures to celebrate new members, Omega sisters, excellence in education, membership gains, distinguished programs, and other functions. Our chapters establish plans which include programs, times for initiations, and various fund-raisers. Sometimes the chapter programs and activities, however interesting, get to be routine, comfortable. As we begin this new year, consider making Alpha Delta Kappa resolutions: try chapter ideas from submissions for the Distinguished Program Award submissions, adopt

a different altruistic project instead of/in addition to current ones,

in addition to chapter meetings— attend district, state, and regional meetings, offer for an office, committee, or special activity, and offer the honor and privilege of Alpha Delta Kappa membership to outstanding teachers

I hope all SER sisters made (it’s not too late!) the New Year’s Resolution to come to Baltimore, Maryland for the July, 2018 SER Conference!

A Message from Conway…

New Faces - New Experiences When you go out and meet people, you can come up with new ideas and be enlightened and help the country become an even better place. Marc Veasey, Fort Worth US Rep As this biennium wraps up and preparations are being made for state elections at upcoming conventions, are you going to be an involved member? Now is the time to make plans to attend your state convention this spring. At your next chapter meeting, make sure to discuss hotel reservations and travel plans. Encourage sisters to join you. First timers and those that have attended before will leave their state convention with renewed enthusiasm for Alpha Delta Kappa. Many years ago, I attended my first Virginia convention. My sponsor made sure I did not feel isolated or uncomfortable throughout the weekend. She and her long time travel partner, a member from another chapter elsewhere in our state, offered to share their room with me. Together they made certain I met other sisters, had someone to sit with at meetings and most importantly, they made sure I was enjoying myself. Once a member experiences a state convention, she comes back year after year. It was true for me and I have seen it be true for so many others, too. Being an involved member of A∆K makes it easy to talk to other excellent educators you work alongside or meet along the way. We are in the midst of our annual Membership Campaign and part of your responsibility as a member is to bring in other deserving educators. I encourage you to take five minutes to consider what you enjoy most about your membership. Is it the sisterhood you share with other members? Is it the difference we make with our altruistic and world understanding projects? Or maybe it is a scholarship you were awarded that allowed you to acquire new knowledge or skill sets. Do not keep what you love about Alpha Delta Kappa a secret; talk with potential members, invite them to your chapter meetings and share the professional and personal benefits of being an Alpha Delta Kappa sister. Recently, I shared the following information with our SER Membership Teams, which consist of our 3P’s and two Vice President Membership Consultants. I want you to know this information, because you are also needed to make a difference, if we are to continue as an international honorary organization for women educators. At every state convention, attendees will experience a thirty minute presentation, created by the International Membership Committee, entitled Membership . . . a TEAM SPORT. It is our belief that by working together, we will add members to our chapters and we will add chapters to our organization. During this session you will be given information to help you be an involved team member! Now, before time goes by, get out the registration information for your state convention. Talk to others and make your plans to attend. To paraphrase Marc Veasey, when you go out and meet people, you can come up with new ideas and be enlightened and help Alpha Delta Kappa become an even better organization for women educators.

Judy!

January 2018 Happy New Year! I am a great fan of new beginnings and second chances. Resolutions….not so much. I guess I like second chances and new beginnings because I sometimes have trouble keeping New Year resolutions, so I am generally in need of second chances! Sound familiar? If you can relate to this, let’s plan together for a new year’s resolution this year…one that we can keep! Before we start, I have a question, “Do you have a talent?” “Whoa,” you ponder, “where is she going with this?” Stay with me. Here we go! Some of you will remember Erma Bombeck and her salty wisdom. She once was quoted with this jewel, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say ‘I used everything you gave me.’” Using Erma’s wise advice, let’s think about making a resolution to use every bit of talent we have. If you are still trying to figure out just what talent you have, let me make a few suggestions: 1. If you can sing, sing with your heart like you really mean it! If you are not a great vocalist, sing anyway. It’s all about heart. 2. If you have a heart for encouraging and being a good friend and supporter, express that support as it’s needed….sometimes quietly and other times like a mama bear protecting her cubs. 3. If you have a giving spirit, give all you’ve got. I’m not talking about money; I’m talking about energy, or an expression of love meant especially for one who needs it most. 4. If you are a good listener, listen. Sometimes the best gift is simply listening…quietly and intently. No advice is needed, just someone to care enough to listen. 5. If you are an “innovator,” DO something! Don’t just talk about what could be done; get the ball rolling and there is no telling what you might accomplish! Surely you can relate to one of these ideas and you can probably keep a resolution like this if you set your mind to it! I know a lady who is quick to say she has no talents. Every time I hear her say that I have to remind her how wrong she is. You see, she carries an assortment of greeting cards and stamps everywhere she goes. When a need is mentioned, the appropriate card is selected, signed, addressed, and stamped to send a word of cheer and caring right then. A talent? Yes, and she uses it well! As you step into 2018, remember you have talents that are just waiting for you to share it with others! Don’t hide that God-given gift. Someone needs to receive the gift of your talent! And while you are at it……. go ahead and dance like no one’s watching! You’re probably a better dancer than you think! Have a wonderful year! Judy Barnhill, SER Chaplain

Distinguished Program Award

As a reminder, in each newsletter, we are going to print two (2) submissions for the Distinguished Program Award. I hope these programs will provide ideas for the rest of us to use in our chapters. To be as fair as possible, we will have the states go in alphabetical order and the chapters go in alphabetical order. When we finish with all 7 states, we will go back through the states/chapters again. The publication order of these programs is not an indication as to the finalist. This month’s submissions are from NC Lambda and SC Iota. These programs are highlighted on the next two pages. The SER Distinguished Program Award entry which was selected by the adjudicating committees will be announced in the April KAPPAN.

NORTH CAROLINA LAMBDA

Our December program was presented by Hannah's Haven - a Teen Challenge Center for Women. This organization is a faith-based recovery program for women 18 and older. Hannah's Haven seeks to provide a safe, stable, and peaceful environment for women who want to establish a lifestyle free of drugs and/or alcohol. The program began with a brief history given by Bonnie Harris the founder of this particular program. Bonnie spoke firsthand about the devastating effects of drug abuse and how she pursued a dream God gave her to open a Christ-centered home for women desiring recovery from addiction. Six young women from Hannah's Haven presented two interpretative dances for us that evening. The transformation that was taking place in each of their lives was evident as they performed. Two of the young women shared their testimonies. Their stories were filled with pain and loss. These young Moms had left everything in order to recover from their addictions. More than a few tears were shed as we listened to their stories. For our altruistic focus that evening, we collected items that are constantly needed at the home. We also provided each of the ladies with a gift - an inspirational t-shirt and a cross necklace. They were so appreciative. For most of us, it was a program that we will never forget!

SOUTH CAROLINA IOTA

The Role of Women In the Late 19th Century By Theresa Morelli In celebration of Founders Month, South Carolina Iota Chapter invited Professor Brenda Schoolfield, President of South Carolina Beta Chapter, to speak about the Founders of Alpha Delta Kappa. She discussed the roles of women in their social and historical context. Dr. Schoolfield is a history professor at Bob Jones University and holds a doctorate in history from the University of South Carolina. She spoke about women’s roles in late 19th century in and outside the home. Reformation movements such as abolition, temperance, prisons and schools expanded the woman’s sphere of influence from the home to the public domain. This increased their desire to participate in the political process and was the reason for the beginnings of the women’s rights movement. By the mid century our founders, Agnes Shipman Robertson, Marie Neal, Marion Southall and Hattie Poppino had only a few professional choices. They were limited to teaching or nursing. These women saw a real need to establish a world where women professionals could share ideas and establish a community of support for educators and the future of the profession. They built the Alpha Delta Kappa organization with three goals in mind: Educational Excellence, World Understanding, and Altruism. This presentation was well received by our membership and our guest, Ouidasue Nash, South Carolina Alpha Delta Kappa President. Joanie, an Iota member since 2009, says she was impressed by the way Brenda made the history of women come alive.
