ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Principal’s Comments Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Southview! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new families and new staff members to the “Southview Family.” The mission at Southview is “Southview… a caring community where leaders and learners are ONE!” It was great to see so many of you at our August Assessment Days and Grade Level Curriculum Nights. Many Curriculum Nights are still coming up over the next few weeks. Frequent and open communication between home and school is important. Please look for the SOUTHVIEW newsletter at the beginning of each month. It will include a variety of information as well as dates for upcoming activities during the month. Also watch for the SOUTHVIEW SCOOP on your email for news and upcoming events. We also post pictures and news on the Southview Elementary Facebook and Twitter pages. Please follow us! Every one of us—students, parents and teachers, are full of hope and possibilities for the new school year. Your partnership with the school is essential in building a successful year for your child. As we begin a new school year, remember that you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Think about your hopes and dreams for your child’s education, and share them with him/her. Make time for your child to read each night, and encourage his/her natural curiosity about the world we live in. When you need help or have a question, know that teachers at Southview are here to assist you. I am so grateful for the support Southview parents provide for students and staff. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The families at Southview are my priority and my door is always open to you. Respectfully,

Christine Heilman Principal, Southview Elementary

Visitors to Southview We have an adult greeter at a Welcome Desk in our entryway each day during the student contact day. If you need to walk your child to class, please sign in at the Welcome Desk and get a visitor name tag before entering the instructional areas. If you need to talk to the teacher, please call, email, or arrange a time to meet that is conducive to both of you. It is important that teachers are able to greet students at 8:25 and get them started on their daily learning adventures promptly at 8:40. If your child is arriving late or being picked up early, you will go to the office.     

If you are here to volunteer, you will sign in, receive a visitor badge and proceed to the classroom. If you are here to have lunch with your child, sign in, receive a visitor tag and proceed to the lunchroom to meet your child for lunch. If you need to deliver something to your child, please bring it to the office. Your child will be called to come to the office to retrieve the item. If you are here for a special performance during the day, sign in, receive a badge, and go to the performance area. At the conclusion of your visit, please sign out at the Welcome Desk and return the visitor’s tag.

Behavioral Expectations at Southview Elementary At Southview, we provide a safe and nurturing environment so we can keep our focus on student learning and achievement. Students learn best when they feel safe and secure among their classmates and throughout the school environment. All of us want to be assured that our children are safe and well cared for at school. Therefore, behavioral expectations and logical consequences need to be clearly communicated to students, parents, and staff. Time will be spent throughout the year teaching students what behavior is expected. Positive behavior will be encouraged with acknowledgement. When problems do occur, the classroom teacher will work with the student to resolve the problem. If inappropriate behavior continues, the teacher will notify the parent. The student may also be removed from the situation or lose privileges. Instances of severe, prolonged, or frequent misbehavior will be referred to the principal or assistant administrator. Consequences for serious behavior violations are dictated by Independent School District 196 policy. This policy is outlined in The Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook that was mailed to you in August. Please review these expectations with your child (ren).

Video cameras are used on some school buses in our district and are intended to decrease student misbehavior and allow safe bus operation for

Drop– off and Pick-up Procedures at Southview Drop-off and Pick-up Location: The Gardenview Drive parking lot located on the east side of the building is the designated pick-up and drop-off area for car riders. All drivers should enter and exit on Gardenview Drive for both morning and afternoon pick- up and drop-off. The main driveway in front of Southview on Whitney Drive is designated for buses only during these times. Due to safety concerns with car and bus traffic mixing together, cars will not be allowed in the main driveway from 8:15-8:40 AM and 2:40-3:10 PM. We will block this area off during these times. Morning Drop-Off Procedures: Have your child prepared to go before you reach the parking lot (backpacks ready, coats zipped and goodbyes said). When you reach the drop-off area, pull forward to the front so that cars behind you can move into the area. Pull forward and fill in empty space so we can keep our line moving smoothly. Have your child exit the car on the curb side. As soon as he/she is safely on the sidewalk, move out of the drop-off area. Do not get out of your vehicle. If your child needs help, staff will be there to support him/her. Please do not wait for them to walk to the building. This backs up the line of cars behind you. We will provide supervision for students walking to the front doors of the school. Remain in the line until you are ready to exit the parking lot. When exiting the parking lot, please observe the right turn sign. If you are parking your car and walking your child into the building, please park on Whitney Drive, then walk on the sidewalks and follow directions for crossing if crossing Whitney Dr. is necessary. If you are dropping your child off on Whitney, please pull down by the playground fields to drop him/her off, so he/ she does not need to cross the parking lot. Do not drop your child in front of the school and have him/her cut through the front lot. Afternoon Pick-Up Procedures: At afternoon dismissal time, students will wait in grade level lines in the drop-off area. They will be dismissed by an adult as you pull up to the area. Please display your pick up tag with your child(ren)’s name listed in the passenger side window. Your child’s name will be called once you reach our pick up part of the line. Do not get out of your car to retrieve your child. Please observe the “No Left Turn” sign as you exit the parking lot. If you want to park and walk to pick up your child, park in the Valley Middle School lot and walk over. If you park in our lot, it creates congestion and chaos with the pick up line. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION, SUPPORT, AND PARTNERSHIP WITH THESE PROCEDURES. We all want Southview to be a safe place for your family!
