Aldridge Library Mission Statement The mission of the Aldridge Elementary Library is to facilitate learning through information literacy, develop 21st century learners, and promote life life-long readers.

Ocelot Library Happenings Mrs. Henderson/ Library Media Specialist/ [email protected]/ Books are a uniquely portable magic!

Welcome to the Aldridge Library Media Center Welcome back to a new school year!! I am so happy to be here and I look forward to working with each of you! With our world quickly moving towards digitization, students must be technology proficient in their learning and research. The school librarian has the opportunity to guide students so they are aware of the available tools and understand how to properly use them. I will support every reader by promoting a comfortable space and maintaining and extensive collection of books, periodicals, and resources in a variety of interests and abilities. I have many things planned for this year and can’t wait to get started!

Each class has a regularly scheduled library class time. Check-Out Kinder & 1st = 1 book 2nd & 3rd = 2 books 4th & 5th = 3 books Please have a safe spot to keep books out of reach from younger siblings and pets. Removing spine labels or barcodes are considered damaging the book and fees will be assessed. Fines are NOT charged for overdue books. Replacement fees ARE charged for damaged or lost books. Please help your child search for lost and missing books. We are always happy to welcome back our missing friends! All books are due TWO weeks from checkout. Books are available for renewal. Please bring the books to the library to renew them. Aldridge library has a “Hold” policy. Students who forget their books on the day of their regularly scheduled day may choose a book to be held overnight. The book is held and should be checked out the next morning.

Why Read 20 Minutes a Day?

Young Scholar’s Book Club Do you have a 5th grade student that enjoys reading? If so, Young Scholar’s Book Club is the perfect opportunity for your Ocelot to think, reflect, share, and READ! Promoting a life-long love of reading is the overall goal for our Aldridge family. Students will be exposed to different types of literature and encouraged to share and discuss their different perspectives. The book club will meet the first Monday of each month in the library during 5th grade lunch at 11:45am-12:15pm.

Let’s face it…parents (and kids) are busy! It is difficult to “fit in” all that needs to be done in a day. We are often faced with having to make choices about what stays and what goes in our schedules. So, why is it so critical to include 20 minutes of reading in your child’s daily schedule? There is a wealth of research supporting daily reading with your child especially prior to and during the period when s/he is learning to read. Here are a few of the ways reading with your child for 20 (or more) minutes a day benefits him or her.  Reading is “brain food”  Reading improves listening skills  Practice makes perfect  Reading improves academic performance  Reading improves relationships

Students must: 1. Come prepared with a lunch. 2. Be ready to discuss the book. 3. Be respectful of our friends. 4. Be good listeners. 5. Ask questions. 6. Have fun!! If you are interested in joining our Young Scholar’s Lunch Bunch stop by the Aldridge Library for an invitation!

Library Helpers 4th and 5th graders Would you like to help out in the library? No experience is required. Students selected to be Library Helpers will be taught how to shelve correctly. Each Library Helper is assigned a section of shelves that he or she will take “ownership” of. This includes keeping the shelves neat and clean, keeping books in order, and shelving books that are on the cart. Occasionally there will be additional jobs you may be asked to help with. We ask that you commit to coming in three times a week to check on your shelves. If other students are in the library and need help, our helpers are welcome to assist them, as we know our helpers truly “know” their library! Library Helpers will be coming in while there are other students using the library, good behavior is expected. Our Library Helpers are models of behavior for the other students, and will be asked to be consistent, courteous, respectful, and helpful. When helpers come in to work, they will sign in and check the cart for “their” books without an excessive amount of visiting with other helpers. When their duties are complete, they are expected to join their class at recess. Interested students stop by the library and ask Mrs. Henderson for an application and schedule time for an interview!
