A.J. Brendel Mission Statement At Brendel Elementary our mission is to provide the highest quality education in a safe, caring and challenging community that allows for individual differences and learning styles.

The Brendel Annual Dash and Bash October 14th! Pledge envelopes/money are due October 10th.

Principal’s Corner: Unbelievably, we have completed our third week of school! It is amazing how fast the time goes, and at the same time, how much is accomplished in that short span of time. Our students are well on their way as learners, as well as developing good habits socially and organizationally. Interestingly, research is showing that it is not just how smart people are that matters, but even more, their work habits and ability to “self-regulate” that makes for a successful life. That is exactly the goal of our classrooms and school; learn the academics and develop thinking and problem solving skills, at the same time developing independence, organization and social-emotional skills. It is essential that our children learn that making mistakes and struggling a bit is normal and that we learn from every experience; that is the nature of school and also of learning how to get along with others. We are supporting them to gradually become more independent and you see such pride in them when they begin to take ownership of their learning and their relationships with others. Parents and school do this work together. These first years are foundational to all that will come later! We can help by giving them lots of encouragement, clear boundaries (explaining why those boundaries are important, and not just to have rules), and lots of opportunities to try new things out with as much independence as possible! After thirty plus years in education, I can attest to the importance of “letting go,” and “letting kids” do what they can independently. So let them walk into school and start their day on their own. Ask them at the end of the day what they learned, what problems they solved, what they enjoyed, what they are curious about. They will flourish by our supportive interest and belief in their growing abilities as learners and people! Doris Goetz
