Fall Board Meeting Sept 29-Oct 2, 2016 It’s not too late to join us in Duluth for our Fall Board Meeting. We are staying at the historic Fitgers Inn on the lakefront of Superior. Fitgers has four restaurants, two nightclubs and shopping all on site. http://fitgers.com/hotel.php. Fly yourself or airline into KDLH, home of Cirrus aircraft, our official airport. Monaco Air is the only FBO on the field. Arrivals on Friday, September 30th. Fitgers will provide transportation to and from the airport for early arrivals and late departures. Tara and I will be there on Thursday for early arrivals. Duluth is Outside Magazine's "Best Town Ever" With 6,834 acres of city parkland, 178 miles of wooded trails, 16 designated trout streams, plus Lake Superior, there's not much you can't do when you are outside in Duluth. Spend a day on the water with a harbor cruise, charter fishing, sailing, or kayaking - be it on the big lake, the bay or the St. Louis River. Experience nature while hiking trails, exploring parks or strolling the LakeWalk. Rent a car or fly low level over the lake up the north shore. Take a fall colors tour on a historic train up the North Shore or into the St. Louis River wilderness. There are also maritime and railroad museums and the Lake Superior aquarium. With so much to see and do, you should come early and/or stay late. http:// www.visitduluth.com

PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Like most of you, I fly for fun. It is a lifestyle. It allows us to broaden our adventures in ways that “car people”, as Tara would put it, would never understand. I have been flying for 48 years. During that time I have had my share of incidents, experiences that left me saying to myself, I’ll never do that again! I’ve also had some mechanical failures that got my attention and one dead stick landing. At this point I feel at the top of my piloting game with confidence in my decision making and my ability to handle emergencies. The plane has been running flawlessly, with a new engine and propeller.

sudden a since of foreboding overcame me. I couldn’t explain it. I decided to check the weather again. I planned a couple of doglegs but realized I was incapable of making a decision, any decision. I have been way over-scheduled this year; a lot of fun, work and an upcoming medical procedure. I had worked 6 hours that day without a break so we could leave early. I also hadn’t eaten anything yet that day. (Tara always warns me about not eating.) I had hit my personal wall. Even though the plane was ready, the pilot was not.

A couple of weeks ago Tara and I were going to make a 3.5 hour flight to a friend’s lake home. The host and most of the guests are FDA members. It’s a weekend filled with great friends, food and conversation at a beautiful lake home. It has become an annual event for us, and we were really looking forward to it.

We all know as pilot in command, canceling a flight is not easy. I was going to disappoint myself, Tara and possibly my friends. I had to make that call saying I was canceling. Would they think I didn’t want to come? Would they think less of me as a pilot? Would they try to encourage me to make a flight I felt I shouldn’t?

The Mooney was fueled and ready to go. The weather was going to be challenging with a couple of broken lines of thunderstorms developing. It was going to be a mental challenge, but doable. We got to the airport and started untying the plane and all of a

A few days later while I was still wondering how my friends felt about my canceling, our host called and said they supported my decision and could tell there was something more going on. More than even I knew at the time.

Fortunately, we all have great friends in the FDA. We are all pilots and they knew how hard it was for me to cancel. This is one of the things I love about the FDA. We share in the excitement, adventures, and lifestyle that comes with aviation. We also share in the pitfalls and danger it can bring. We understand each other like no “car people” ever can. FLYING Salina, KS Recap - Smoky Hill Bomb Range YOU MISSED a GREAT weekend!!!! (P.S. This note is not directed to Andy, Terry, Brian Beau, Ray, Henry, Ric, Stevo, Bart, Kate, Marianne, Jennifer, ect!!!) Yep, this is directed to those folks that did not elect to come to Salina. Friday a little private tour of the Smoky Hill Bomb Range (45 Minute Tour turned into a FIRST CLASS three hour tour!!!) Then off to Salina’s Air National Guard Hangar to play with the night Vision Goggles and see up close a $22 Million dollar NEW Black Hawk Helicopter. But we were not done yet, it was off to the Kansas Army Indoor Shooting Range to try out the Air Driven 50 cal. Machine guns, 9mm pistols and other very life like shooting machines. The evening dinner at Fly Boys Brewery in Sylvan Grove, KS was an evening not to forget. Are you getting a clear picture this was a “NOT TO MISS” weekend and we have not even got to the MAIN EVENT. The Smoky Hill Bomb Range Open House, was just a short 9 mile drive from you home away from home the Salina Holiday Inn. Saturday morning the FDA did not want to miss out so we were up early and off to the range. Had to get the CE in while we waited a few hours to see the F16s buzzing over our heads. Well, with weather holding up the F16s in Tulsa the A10 Warthogs open the show and man they did not disappoint!!!

Top Hill looking over little copied Iraq city.

If you want to know any information of the A10’s you need to sit down with Henry Hahn and have him bring you up to speed! Yes, the United States Air Guard did show their stuff. A10 Warthogs, F16s out of Tulsa after the weather cleared, and the Bombers B52 and B1s. The temperatures were perfect and with the cloud cover absolutely perfect and no raining on the National Guard Parade. So next time you need to come to the show. Although, I do not feel this weekend will ever be repeated like it was the first weekend of AUGUST 2016!!! Hope you enjoy the photos attached. Brought to you by Bart, Kate, Brian and Jennifer your Salina, KS Tour Guides. (More pictures on p.6)

FLYING Cuba - March 25-31, 2017 We are extremely fortunate to have the world's expert in flying our own planes to Cuba in Jim Parker from Caribbean Flying Adventures. For those of you that don't know Jim, we have been using his services for over 10 years now on all these Island trips and he is THE EXPERT on flying into Cuba. He has, to date, personally escorted in excess of 200 (you read that right) two hundred of us GA types aircraft into the forbidden land of Cuba. He has all the contacts, knows all the idiosyncrasies, all the people to talk to, all the procedures, all the everything needed for this trip. It is that strange an animal so rest assured, we are in the best hands possible. He has seen it all by now so anybody that is on the fence due to insecurity issues, put them to bed and trust Jim and get on board. Insurance for your plane. This question has come up several times and this is an email that Jim Parker sent to me:

INSURANCE -  I am not aware of any underwriters who are now (August 2016) not willing to recognize Cuba as one of the island of the Caribbean (for coverage purposes) or to add Cuba specifically in their policy coverage area.  If the broker or underwriter refuses, my suggestion would be to switch underwriters because anyone that out of touch with reality may not be reliable or

trustworthy with other key issues regarding future claims.   I am always happy to contact brokers or underwriters directly to share the latest with them.  Many times in the past, that has led to an acceptable resolution.  Just yesterday, one of the Flying Physicians called to say his insurance company immediately recognized my name and OKed the additional coverage because I was organizing the trip.  Not the best reason for providing the coverage but it works for the time being. Jim

Bottom line here, call your company now while there is time to hammer out solutions and get them to allow you coverage on the off chance they still are not up to speed. It may cost a bit of $ to add a rider but it can be done!! Insurance is a highly fluid and things are changing rapidly, in our favor, as time has gone forward. Do not be bullied by your insurance company. Let them know that they are in the small minority of companies that are not responsive to change and you will change companies if they don't adjust to the new environment.

For those of you that have been to Cuba in the last year or two, I know what you paid and this is less than any other service that has been used PLUS Jim can take each of us by the hand PLUS we get to fly our planes there PLUS we get to write the trip off for CE PLUS we get to do it together!! There have been questions on can people fly Commercial. At first the answer was yes, now unsure of the wisdom of this as hotel space is going to be the limiting factor. We will have a minimum of 25 rooms but are hopeful for at least twice that. Brenda, Stacy, Jim and I only want good accommodations (there are plenty of sketchy ones) so at this point Brenda and I have decided to limit this to just FDA planes so that we have rooms in Cuba. If we get the green light for more rooms we will open it up to airline arrivals. What this means is that if you don't have a plane, hitch a ride with one of us that do. (Continued on p. 8)

Trip Cost:

$2,900 per person, double occupancy $2,400 per person for additional couples in the aircraft $4,300 for a single pilot. includes hotels, airport fees ($1,000), all meals with at least one beverage, all transportation, full-time escort pilot, guides and activity/ event fees. Does not include accommodations Saturday night March 25 for the room at Naples. This is a once in a life time deal for many of us. We will take care of all the hard stuff, all you have to do is show up with a smile!! Final pricing will be lower or slightly higher depending on possible changes to the schedule by the Cuban Tourism office. These are fixed prices for a very similar October 2016 trip for the Flying Physicians. 531Three Mile Knob Road, Pisgah Forest, North Carolina 28768 Phone 727-391-1750 • cell 727-479-5235 Stacy Hufziger• [email protected] • www.flyingdentists.org

FLYING Cuba Trip (Con’t from p.6) A side effect of the above is that this will have to be a first come first served deal to make it fair. I have had oodles and poodles of you that have called me and said "Steve put me on the list". Historically I have done this with pleasure but this time, with possible room limits, we have decided to make

it known to you all the moment we know for sure about exact cost and #s of rooms and then Jim will be the gatekeeper for the first served deal. He gets the money, you get to come. I don't know any other way to do this fairly. I am really hoping for at least 50

rooms when all is said and done but just don't know yet. If you have questions let em fly, we may not know the answer yet but chances are Jim will know if we don't. This will be an epic trip!!!!!!! Cap'n Steve

FLYING FDA Regional News Eastern District The Lodge at Crow Hill is full and the Sudderth's and Willises' are looking forward to a week-end of CE, sightseeing, and fellowship with our FDA friends. There is no need for a rental car unless your are extending your stay. We will provide transportation to and from the airport and all events. Your registration covers meals at the Lodge, wine, beer and mixers for your preferred cocktails. You bring the bottle. You will be landing at Michael Smith Airport; the identifier is KMRH. My cell phone number is 828-443-7648 and Alex’s is 910-330-1234. We look forward to a wonderful week-end with friends on the North Carolina coast. Steve Sudderth

Western District A giant misconception of mine has been that as we mature, OK I really mean get older, that things are going to slow down some. Boy is that thought ever proving to be wrong. The FDA national meeting in Cody, WY was at the end of June. It seems like I got home from Cody, un-packed and then re-packed for the FDA Eagle Nest fishing trip in July. As long as I was flying that far, I took a detour to Oshkosh before heading home. While at OSH, even being as large as that event is, I managed to run into a few other FDA members. Terry Bass, who was also at Eagle Nest, Kevin and Bill D’Angelo, and also Glen Doyan from Arizona were all in attendance. It’s always great to catch up with other members of the FDA family. Speaking of that, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention (again) just how much of a family the FDA can be. I have to say a special thanks to our President and First Lady, Steve and Tara Schell, for helping me pick up my daughter, Cari, who flew in commercially to Minneapolis from Boston just for the Eagle Nest trip. They put us up the night before we left for Canada and then met us after the Eagle Nest trip to get Cari back to the airport to fly home. Thanks also goes out to Ned and Molly Markey for putting me up the night before I continued on to Oshkosh. As another infamous FDA member has said in the past, “you guys rock!”. At this years’ National meeting we had 30% of our west coast members in attendance. It would have been an even higher percentage but a couple of members were grounded by weather. Always better to be safe than sorry. I hope everyone has had a great summer. Mine has been busy and with fall just around the corner, I don’t see things slowing down anytime soon. Next thing you know it will be winter and then in the spring we can start it all over again. Until then, fly safe.

FLYING FDA Annual Ski Trip February 24-27, 2017 Skiers, September is THE time to plan to join the FDA at Snowmass, Colorado next winter. February 24-27, 2017 are the dates for the Dental CE courses with arrivals anytime the week before. Plenty of time now to mark your time out of the office, get the kids schedules arranged, get some airline tickets, and get ready to ski. Yes, we all leave our planes behind for this one. Most fly into Aspen, Eagle, or Denver. A few of us Midwesterners drive. 122 people attended last year and 11 condos are already booked for this year’s trip. The Crestwood is a ski-in ski-out resort with the ski rental shop on the property…EASY! With our generous FDA returning group discount and group ski ticket package and you get a lot of bang for the buck. Check them out at www.thecrestwood.com. Each day also has a sizable group of non skiers in our group doing other Snowmass/Aspen activities. Checking out Aspen, snowmobiling, going to the dog sled facility to see the dogs, gondola to the top for lunch with skiers, strolling the shops and restaurants of Snowmass Village, or just kicking back at the heated pool or 3 hot tubs with a good book.

Plan ahead to get out of the office and on the slopes with the FDA. President Steve and his handpicked crew will be the burger/ hot dog chefs for this year’s FDA Potluck Picnic on Saturday night….a gastronomic delight. With all the crazy weather across the nation this summer, wildfires out west, rain and flooding across the other two thirds of the country, it is time to Think Snow. FLYING Member’s Mailbox

S NEW ".....Approach.........6787R........" Is the epitaph engraved on Ron Jacobus' internment vault. Ron Jacobus was called home by the Lord on Saturday July 30 this year when he fell at home. Ron's injury proved fatal that same day. Ron's generosity and charm will be sorely missed. Next to his family, Ron loved flying the most. "Approach......6787R..... "Was heard from Ron's 210 thousands of times over 40 years of flying. On a typical FDA arrival day, a flat of bright Washington state Bing and Rainier cherries would greet you, held by the strong hands of Ron Jacobus, with Ruthie at his side. Offering a share of their cherry harvest was a regular example of their hospitality. Ron and Ruth often enjoyed FDA gatherings with their grandchildren, as many do. I can remember these impressive girls when they were just 7 & 8 as participants in the FDA children's program, just as charismatic as their grandparents. Find Ron's obituary at www.telfordschapel.com or ObitsforLife.com. Ron's life exemplified a man of service to others, through his community, church, and career. An electrical engineer before becoming a dentist, Ron pursued flying with a passion to detail. To rebuild the Miss Veedol with his Spirit of Wenatchee group was a years-in-theconstructing dream come true, completed in 2003. Ron also built a fiberglass amphib plane with an auto's engine, as Ruth recalled. A modified Bellanca named Miss Veedol, in 1931 made the first nonstop trans-Pacific flight between Japan and the U.S.A. , a singleengine wood airplane of the time. "There's not a piece of that airplane Ron's hands did not touch " ,Ruth quotes their friend saying. The rebuilt Miss Veedol is in honor of that flight

from Misawa, Japan to final landing in Wenatchee, WA, Ron's home. The stories of this flight, this plane, are astounding. Pilots Panghorn and Herndon realized in flight that ditching the landing gear would gain them 15 mph and 600 miles in range. Wing-walking to unpin the struts was nothing for barn stormer Panghorn. And now comes the morning of the final landing in Washington state: no landing gear! They bellied Miss Veedol in and walked away from the cloud of dust. Greater feats than Lindbergh, minus the press. Back in Japan, at one of their fueling stops, Miss Veedol was mired in the sand and mud. Japan thought them to be spies, flying low, and jailed the pilots. After clarifying just who they were, the pilots succeeded with their "one chance to get it off the ground". These stories are preserved in books Ruth noted, such as "Upside-Down Panghorn" and "One chance for glory". Thank you, sweet Ruth, for sharing these marvelous stories with FDA. I think it would be ok with Ruth to send thoughts to her email [email protected], I believe she would like to hear from their FDA friends Kathy Rhoades

S W NE National Convention Cody 2016 On Saturday morning during our recent National Meeting, Senator Alan Simpson agreed to speak to us. What a wonderful morning we had, listening to his stories of Washington, and his life. We offered Senator Simpson an honorarium but he refused. So in good old fashion FDA way we found out he loved the Buffalo Bill Cody museum, so we made a donation in his name. The FDA loves giving back!

At the 2017 National FDA convention Catherine (Cathe') Fish has taught more Flight Instructor Revalidation Clinics and Flying Companions Courses than anyone alive. Flying since 1973, she is a CFII, MEI with 6,000 hours; flying for a commuter airline, flying as a USDA contract pilot and teaching 300 students. An Av Tech Instructor at Cochise College for

five years and an AOPA Air Safety Foundation lead instructor since 1983, she is known for her upbeat, fun, information-packed motivating seminars. Her unusual and hilarious aviation stories are sure to make you laugh with Flying Fish's Wild, Wacky & Outrageous Pilot Whoppers.
