I would like to welcome our new grade 9 students, returning students and new students to our school. I am looking forward to a terrific year and to continue the Lockview High School great tradition of academic and extracurricular excellence. I would like to welcome back returning staff. I would also like to extend a welcome to our new staff members, Vicki Caines (Youth Health Centre), Michael Chiasson, Karen Dobbin, Janet Hattie, Jennifer MacIsaac-Williams, Charles Morash, Megan McArther, Kassia Murphy, James MacDonald, Stephen Pelham, and Joey Williams. We would also like to welcome Cathy Burton as our new Vice Principal. I want to thank Vice Principals Lauren Emanuel and Lori MacDonald for their service and dedication to Lockview High School this past year. Both gave of their time and talents in efforts to improve student achievement of all students under their care. Mrs. Emanuel has taken a new position as Vice Principal of Millwood High and Ms. MacDonald returns as Department Head of English at LHS. This newsletter and subsequent newsletters again this year will be

posted on our website’s front page for one month. It will then be archived. Some hard copies will be available at the main office. If you wish to receive one ask your son/ daughter to pick one up. You can sign-up for an automatic copy of our newsletters subscribing through our school website. PowerSchool continues to be the key communication tool for students and families to access information about school progress and attendance. If you need an account set-up please contact your child’s Vice Principal. The automated School Messenger service will make phone calls about student attendance and school information. Attendance calls are made daily. Please discuss attendance issues with your child. Absence from school directly affects success. The school website will again be used to communicate newsletter information, calendars, contact information, and upcoming events. We will also be continuing to use our School App this year as a tool for organization and communication. This application will work on the web, I-phones, and android phones. It takes the place of a traditional school handbook. The school handbook is posted on our school website.

Lockview has enrolled as a mentor school in implementing Google apps for education (GAFE) in the classroom. Many teachers have received professional development over the last school year and will continue to fully implement the google classroom platform this school year. Each student has a google login where material can be stored, submitted to staff and provide opportunities for more efficient feedback from their teachers. This is exciting for us as we work with our students to improve student engagement and ultimately student achievement. Our Curriculum Night will be Thursday, September 22nd at 6:30pm. Parents/guardians will be asked to attend an opening information session in the Cafétorium. Parents/guardians will then follow their son/daughter’s class schedule and meet their respective teachers. I look forward to meeting you on the 22nd. If you are interested in volunteering at the school please call the school at 902860-6000. Our first SAC meeting will be held Tuesday October 11 th, 2016 at 6:00pm in the library. New members are always welcomed. I want to wish all our students success in your academic endeavours this year. I would also like to extend an invitation to all students to get involved in extracurricular activities offered by our school to further enhance your school experience. Yours in Education,

Bernie MacEachern

Students are NOT permitted to sign themselves out. Parents/Guardians are responsible for contacting the school if your student will be absent for any part of the day. Following is a list of 3 options for reporting attendance for students: 

Parents/Guardians may call our Attendance Line at any time and leave a voicemail. The phone number is 902-860-6000, simply choose option 1 and record your message. Please include: your name, both the first and last name of the student, what grade they are in, the date(s) of the absence, and if they are only missing part of the day, please specify which classes that they will miss. If they are coming to school and have to leave for any reason, please indicate the time that they are leaving, and if they are returning, please indicate their expected return time. They will also need a note to show the classroom teacher to indicate that they have permission to leave.

The most efficient way to sign-out students who are leaving school during the day is to send a note with the student. Please include both the first and last name of the student, what time they are leaving, and if they are returning, please indicate the expected return time. The student should then show the note to the classroom teacher who they are with when they have to leave. Once the note has been shown to the classroom teacher, the student should drop the note off at either the Students’ Services office or the main office so that the excused absence can be entered into Power School.

Parents/Guardians (and only Emergency Contacts listed in Power School) can come into the Main Office at any time to pick-up their students. The Administrative Assistant will record the excused absence into Power School and page their classroom to have to them sent to the Main Office.

Students in grades 10 to 12 may request to be exempt from no more than one final assessment/examination per semester provided the student has completed all major assessment components and meets the requirements as listed:      

No more than 6 excused absences in any course in which the student is enrolled within any one semester. No more than 4 lates in any course in which the student is enrolled within any one semester. Zero unexcused absences in any class. Student must be in “Good academic standing” in every class (“Good Standing” meaning that the student has completed all major assignments and tests. Most English and Math courses are not exempt (please check with your teacher). Exam Exemptions do not apply to Grade 9 students.

Students are responsible for monitoring their attendance using Power-School. At the end of each month a “potential” exam exemption list will be posted on the windows of the students services office.. Students with attendance concerns are to see their respective Vice Principal to review their concerns. One week after the list is posted students can no longer provide notice of absence reasons except for Special Circumstance notices. This will reduce issues at the end of each semester in regards to the exemption list.

Thursday, September 15th, 2016 is HRSB-wide Stand Up Against Bullying “Pink Day”. Pink Day is celebrated at the beginning of the school year to encourage youth and staff to commit to making and keeping a safe and positive school community school, free of bullying. We have marked Pink Day along with other schools in HRSB in a variety of ways, but the most significant and visual way is by everyone wearing Pink to school on September 15th. Wearing Pink is a simple way to show support for and commit to a positive school environment and we are encouraging youth and staff to wear Pink on this day.

Announcements will be made daily at the start of 2nd period (10:42 each day). In addition, announcements are posted on the front page of our school website each day so that students, parents, guardians, and staff can read them each day as well. A paper copy of the announcements is also posted on the windows of the main office each day.

The Social Studies Department would like to welcome back all of our students, as we look forward to another great year at Lockview. On the second day of school, teacher Colin MacEachern hosted 15 students for a live interactive Climate Change Summit in Merida, Mexico. Via the Internet, our students were able to ask questions of our Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna and her American and Mexican counterparts. Student, Ian Van Oosten asked them about the role public transit can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to the wonderful students who participated in this early year activity with one day's notice. Thanks also to administration and IT specialist Jason Fraser for making this event possible.

We would like to welcome Mr. Tony Bucci back this year and we would also like to welcome two new teachers to the French Department: Ms. Karen Dobbin who is teaching Sciences 10 et Sciences Humaines 9 and Ms. Megan MacArthur, who will join us in Semester 2. We are working hard to welcome our grade 9's and to establish routines for them and all of our returning students in grades 10, 11 and 12. We are continuing to focus on the importance of uninterrupted engagement in all classes and consistent use of the French language in all courses. It's so important for the students to consistently speak French in order to increase their competency in the language. They should all be working towards being successful in writing the international DELF exam in grade 12.

Become a 5 Star Student! This year we will be keeping track of student’s getting involved at LHS. The more events you attend or help organize, the more points you receive. To get points all you need to do is get your student ID scanned by a Students’ Council representative at the particular event. There will be different level of prizes for those getting involved. If there are any business’ that would like to help contribute to this project or for more information, please contact the Students’ Council advisor Phil Goora. ([email protected])

The math department would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back from what was hopefully a restful July and August. With this new year comes a few changes to the math department. We say goodbye to Mrs. Kennedy who moved onto Dartmouth High. Although she was only here one year she became an exceptional colleague and mentor. Both teachers and students will miss her. Everyone wishes her the best in her new position. We also need to say goodbye to Mrs. Smith. As a valued member of the math department since LHS opened, her kind nature and experience will be missed. Thankfully she is only moving down the hall to the English department so she remains a part of the LHS family. We also need to welcome two new teachers to our department. Mr. Pelham and Mrs. MacIsaac-WillIams are joining the team. Both bring a great deal of experience to the school. Mr. Pelham was a valued math and science teacher at Ellenvale Junior High for the last 8 years. Mrs. MacIsaac-Williams joins us after five years at Madeline Symonds. Their expertise in the area of mathematics will make them valuable members of the department and school. Congratulations to all of the students who successfully completed the AP Calculus program last year. Of all the students who wrote the AP Calculus exam, 60% of them achieved either a 4 or 5. This percentage far exceeds the world average. Again congratulations for all of your hard work. Peer Tutoring will be available again this year every day at lunch in room D207. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this program whenever they need some help with their math work. The math 12 pre calculus students run this program and are always eager to help students from any level. “Mathematics expresses values that reflect the cosmos, including orderliness, balance, harmony, logic, and abstract beauty.” ― Deepak Chopra

The Fine Arts department is excited to for the 20162017 school year. We will be offering many different courses. Here are a few: Art, Film & Video, Phys. Ed., Construction and Production Technology, Yoga, Drama and Fitness Leadership just to name a few. If you think your child is interested in one of these courses for the next school year, make sure to get the information from the teacher or Student Services.

Firstly, I would like to welcome several new Science teachers. Michael Chiasson comes to us after 19 years at Dartmouth High to teach Chemistry 11 and 12. Karen Dobbin is joining us after three years at Five Bridges Junior High. She is teaching both English and French language Science courses. Charles Morash has accepted a oneyear term with us teaching Science 10 and Physics. He was most recently teaching Math and Science at Halifax West. Next I would like to wish a heartfelt goodbye to Char MacDonald. One of our longestserving Lockview teachers, she has accepted a Guidance position at Halifax Central Jr. High. I want to thank her for the many valuable contributions she has made to our department over the years, and for the many ways she has had a positive impact on the education and lives of her students. Her spirit and passion will be missed. We wish her all the best. A substitute teacher will be joining us for a few days as we work through the hiring process to bring someone new on board. We are looking forward to an excellent 2016/17 school year. We continue to expand our resources for meeting diverse learning needs. New levelled reading texts are arriving to support our teachers in a variety of subjects, and we continue to find new ways to incorporate technology into our regular classroom activities. We also welcome the return of Astronomy 12 after a one year hiatus. Don’t forget that Curriculum Night is coming up very soon. We look forward to meeting all of you and sharing what will be taking place in our classrooms and labs this semester.

We are looking forward to our trip to Spain and Portugal that will take place in March, 2017. We are embarking on an international adventure of 12 days to Spain and Portugal. We currently have 29 students registered but have space for 10 more. Headed by Mr. Phil Goora and Ms. Leah Chiasson, we would be more than happy to meet with anyone who is interested on obtaining more information. We have a brief meeting on September 22nd prior to Curriculum Night for those already registered and for any newcomers who may wish to join our travelling team. Please do not hesitate to contact either Phil Goora or Leah Chiasson by email found on the school's website. It's going to be a wonderful, educational experience!

Hi everyone, my name is Vicki Caines. This is my first year as the Youth Health Centre Coordinator (YHCC) at Lockview High School. I am extremely excited to be here and continue the great work of previous YHCC’s Sheila Lane and Tara White. My health background is a Registered Nurse. I have been practicing as an RN since May of 2003 and have been working in the Youth Health Program since 2010. I have just moved from Cole Harbour District High school where I spent 5 years in the Youth Health Centre (YHC) there. Since August 2003, Youth Health Centres have been a part of Halifax Regional School Board high schools thanks to a partnership between HRSB and the Nova Scotia Health Authority – Public Health Services. The Lockview Youth Health Centre offers a safe place where youth can connect with other youth, participate in programs and have confidential conversations that impact their health and the health of the greater school community. Youth Health Centre programs help to make a positive school climate and build resiliency in youth and contribute to safe, positive schools. Additionally, the YHCC provides support and also connects youth through referral within the school and with other health partners in the community. At the heart of any Youth Health Centre are the students who volunteer their time and energy to the YHC. Students take the lead shaping the programs of the centre and the broader, all-school initiatives as well. They help ensure that the Lockview YHC is a safe space where any student is welcome to participate. All students are welcome to join any of the groups or utilize the services provided. Just stop in and say hi! The YHC is in room C122 and is located right across the hall from the main office and beside student services. This school year, I will be full-time in the YHC, although I do sometimes have Public Health responsibilities that take me away from the school. My schedule will always be on the door so students know when I will be available. On Wednesday mornings Karrie Rayne, Social Worker, is available to students. Some of the groups that are supported through the YHC include the Youth Action Team (Tuesdays at lunch), GSA (Thursdays at lunch), and the Nutrition Group (Thursday mornings). These groups could not be successful without the support of others in the school such as administration, and volunteer teachers and staff. I am very excited to work with the students, staff and greater Lockview community.

This year our English Department consists of the following staff: Ms. L. MacDonald (Department Head) Ms. G. Alecce-Harrison Ms. K. Smith Ms. A. Stuart-Gibson Ms. L. Sullivan Ms. L. Thomas Ms. E White The English Department would like to welcome back all of our students. We hope that they discovered some good books this summer and encourage them to share those titles with their teachers! We ask that those students who were assigned summer reading packages ensure they submit those packages on their assigned due dates. Throughout the year, we will continue to work on helping students discover the importance to, and pleasure that can be found in, reading. In addition to continuing to grow as readers, we hope to work students to see the benefits of, and importance in, writing. Did you know that.... Reading for just six minutes a day can reduce stress by 68% . 'Bibliotherapy' is 'the use of reading matter for therapeutic purposes'.
