MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | SEPTEMBER 2016 ACTIVITIES CHANGE FAST! REMEMBER TO WATCH BULLETINS FOR UPDATES! From the Pastor: Home and coming home are themes woven throughout our Old and New Testaments. Abraham and Sarah journeyed in covenant with God to a promised land they would call home. Joshua led God’s people after years in the wilderness across the Jordan River into their new home. Jesus shares the parable of the Prodigal Child and our leaving and returning home, as well as, Jesus’ promise that in God’s home there are many rooms, and he goes to prepare a place for us. Our search and need of a home is part of our walk with God. I often refer to church as a “place we can call home, and a people we can call family.” As a “preachers kid” I grew up in the church. To paraphrase the Apostle Paul in church I lived and breathed and had my very being. I was baptized at church in Wichita, Kansas. At church in Northridge, CA I played hide and go seek in the sanctuary and loved our adopted Grandma Mary. At church in Denver, CO I went to the Dillon High Country Center summer camp and climbed a 14,264 foot peak. At church in Winter Park, FL I played basketball in Youth Fellowship and worked at the Florida Conference Print Shop. Even when I did not feel very close to God, in church I knew that God was always close to me. Continued to page 2

At its very best church will always be that place we can call home. At our very best church will always be those people we can call family. We need to ponder those words and take them to heart. Together we can be and become the home and family God has called us to be. Remember with God all things are possible. Welcome home this Homecoming Sunday, and welcome to our beloved Mt. Zion UCC home and family throughout the church year. As a good friend of mine once said, “Be gentle with yourself and be nice to one another.”

Faithfully, Mark

Mount Zion UCC Preschool News! Greetings to the congregation from the halls of preschool! We have filled ALL of our classrooms this year. We have 105 happy and smiling children and a full parking lot! Our staff of eleven are dedicated, creative, caring ladies with whom it is a pleasure to work with! We are sorry to say that Mrs. Angela Jordan and Mrs. Mary Jane Measmer left us right before the school year began. Both ladies will be missed! We have hired Mrs. Sharon Corriher Gunther, daughter of Henry and Ellen Corriher. She will be teaching 4’s this year. Her hard work and dedication are amazing! Our new assistant is Mrs. India Bearce, a preschool mom from last year. Creative and sweet, we are so fortunate to have her! Our Pampered Chef fundraiser is now going on will run through October 14th. This year, we do have to add sales tax and shipping. The preschool receives 20% of all sales, thanks to our consultant, Jennifer DeNicholas, who is also a preschool parent. Watch for catalogs and order forms in the library. If purchasing, please make checks to Jennifer DeNicholas. A huge thanks to Frank Corriher who spent hours repairing and repainting our preschool walls. They look brand new! Special thanks to Brenda Bassinger, Ann Bullard, Wanda Corriher, Sandee Carrigan, Kay Kluttz and Betty Corriher who served as greeters at our open house and first day festivities. Our Fall Festival will be held on Monday and Tuesday, October 24 and 25 in the Fellowship Hall at 9 am. If you are available to run a station for several children at a time, please let me know. We would love to have a few church volunteers to interact with our preschoolers. The men’s fellowship will be helping to top off our mulch on Saturday, October 8th, beginning at 8 am. We plan to invite any “Preschool Dads” willing to help. Thanks so much to all of you who will come to help. We appreciate you! Thanks for all of your support! Emily Bancroft, Director Mt. Be A Hero And Donate Sunday, October 2 1:00-6:00 PM Mark your calendar for the next Blood Drive, sponsored by the Outreach Committee, in the Church Hut. Please note: It has to be eight (8) weeks since the last time you have given before you can at this Drive. Volunteers are needed to help us meet our goal of usable units of blood for our community. We wish to “thank” everyone for his or her continued support as we hope to make each Drive better and better, for there is always a great need for “precious blood”.

October 9, 2015 First United Methodist Church in China Grove. Registration opens at 2:00 pm and the walk will start at 3:00 As you take each step in the CROP Hunger Walk, imagine that you’re in Kenya, walking to get water that you’ll carry back home in a 5-gallon jerry can balanced on your head. Your family needs this water for drinking, bathing, preparing meals or watering the garden or livestock. Whatever the reason, 5 gallons of water weighs about 42 pounds, and you may have to walk miles to get it. Having to use so much of your valuable time to carry water keeps you from growing more vegetables, raising more livestock or developing a business. There is only so much time in a day. There’s a solution, and you can be part of it. CROP Hunger Walks help Church World Service work with communities to determine the best solution to their challenges. It could be a sand dam to help provide water. Micronutrient packets to feed children. Or tools and seeds to help keep a family fed and healthy.
