Regional Commissioner’s Report It is very encouraging to see excellent representation of our Region members at recent major Region and State events. Although I didn’t attend either the 100 years of Cub Scout celebrations at Government House in Sydney or Fort Scratchley in Newcastle, the feedback has been extremely position. Congratulations to all concerned and equally I hear our Region was well represented at the State Scout Rally and I am informed that our Wangi/Rathmines Patrol were placed 2nd overall in the State and 1st in the Region. Well done to all. This brings me to reminding all about our major events coming up in the Region such as the Region Venturer to be held 2- 4 December in Sydney and the Scout Corroboree to be held at our Lostock Camp in January. Generally speaking, the groups that participate in these events, the Scout Corroboree in particular due to the age of the youth, are groups with the leaders are attending and are enthusiastic in their approach to have others participate opposed to those where the leaders cannot attend for work, personal reasons, family etc. Whilst I understand due to varying circumstances, some leaders cannot attend Region events and that is fully appreciated, it is important you still give your youth members the opportunity to participate. This can be achieved by effective communication with other groups in your District who are attending or for that matter another District. I would suggest in terms of communication it would be best to facilitate this through your GL/LIC or District leader. If all else fails contact our Region Office and we can advise you details of group participation and leader contact details. You will be aware, of course that in consultation with your DC’s and GL’s/LIC’s Region set number targets in terms of membership growth to be strived for by the 15/4/17. It is paramount to note these are targets not set by myself and were set with full consultation and transparency. How is your Group going? Even a cursory analysis would clearly indicate that some groups “are there” already and most groups are in “reasonable range” and some groups may struggle to meet their targets. Struggle is Ok – we all struggle at times but I firmly believe if you aim at nothing you will hit it every time. Numbers are included in this Bulletin for your information. These numbers are forwarded regularly to your DC. I read very recently that the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Mr Brendan Watson, who is a dynamic leader by the way, writes to every group in his State personally if they have not grown in membership and asks why and more importantly how can he help. I am always happy to help groups in their membership growth endeavours; so if you need help please ask. I will guarantee you will get a response and at least an experienced leader to talk to. Keep up the great work please. We have welcomed a new Chief Commissioner to NSW Mr Neville Tomkins OAM. Neville has been previously Australian International Commissioner and Chief Commissioner ACT Branch. We welcome him in H & C Region to his challenging role. He will meet the Region team in the first instance on 24th September. He has also indicated his intention to attend our Scout Corroboree at Lostock in January. He has made it very clear one of his highest priorities is to grow our numbers and in his words will be ‘relentless’ in this objective. I, which will be no news to anyone that has read my many articles including this one, couldn’t agree with him more. Let’s work together to support our new Chief Commissioner with his endeavour.

Joey Scout Report Hello Joey Leaders The months are flying by and another year is almost over. I’d like to ask all your leaders how you think your year in Joeys has gone. Have you had some of the wonderful promise challenges that the Region has produced? Has your Mob done a stack of outdoor activities? Have your Joeys been super keen to come back every week? Take a moment and reflect on your successes and your failures. Did you do an amazing craft? Did you have an awesome outdoor and venture planned that got washed out? Have your Joeys had a chance to experience everything that Joey Scouts has to offer? If the answer is no, then there is and easy fix: 4th Term. The weather is warming up, which means we can spend heaps of time outside. Has your Mob gone adventuring somewhere new lately? Have you participated in a District event, such as a camp, or activity (every District has at least one event coming up) Jumping back to the badge work note; there’s heaps of scope for delivering an exciting adventurous and fulfilling program to Mobs of all shapes and sizes. As mentioned in previous months Joey Scout Passbooks are available from the Region office, these books are as much a guide for parents to the world of Scouting as they are a badge work record for the Joeys, so make sure that your Mob uses them, as common questions have since disappeared in Mobs that are using them. State Konara is also coming up next year. By now you should have received an email regarding a survey about the content that will be presented. I’d highly recommend the event as it should be a blast! Pencil in the 27th & 28th May 2017 as a leaders networking, relaxation and learning weekend. Next month’s Bulletin article will have heaps of information and contain a draft calendar for Regional Joey events so make sure that you keep checking your inbox for more information.

Cub Scout Report “Centennial badge” The sale of the Centennial Badge segments is still available for those who would like extra badges for their group. All pieces of the badge cost $2 each. Please arrange through your DCSL or directly from me. The badges will also be on sale at the Regional Cuboree. “Centennial Picnic Day” It was great to see Cub Scouts plus their Parents and Leaders at Fort Scratchley. The cupcakes went down a treat with all those that attended; I hope you all enjoyed the cupcakes and a big thanks to Kerry for arranging them. The firing of the guns was something that was special for the Cub Section and the firing had to be conducted by persons over 18yrs. Thank you to those who represented the Cub Section and Region. “Travel Bag” We received an update this week and the bags will arrive in the country by the end of August then go into customs. This is the best information that I have so far. I will advise your DCSL as information comes to hand. “Region Cuboree” The Regional Cuboree is full steam ahead. The planned activities for the Cuboree should be one of the best that we have delivered for our Cub Scouts. The Districts will be setting up on the Friday after 9.30 and need to be finished by 5.00pm, as the Cub Scouts will be arriving after 5.00pm and the Magician at 7.00pm. Please follow your DCSL instruction prior to the Cuboree. See you all at the Cuboree. “State Cuborees” The placement of H&C personnel into Packs and other roles will be completed by the end of August and the Pack coordinators will be advised of their charges for the Cuboree. Please have all paper applications to the office or me by the 30th August. The application system will still be open for few more months but I cannot guarantee late applications will be with their Packs. Our base at the State Cuboree has the theme of Celtic. We will need to set up early to achieve a great base for the Cub Scouts. The team will need to arrive on two dates eg 30th December and 3 January. Regional Events: • Regional Cuboree – September 10/11, Morisset Show Ground • State Cuboree – 3 – 7 January 2017, Cataract Scout Park

Venturer Scout Report continues Queen’s Scout Presentations I have had a number of Leaders and Venturers ask me on how they should structure their Queen’s Scout presentation and who organises it. I would suggest that all Leaders and Venturers take time to read the current Queen’s Scout Award Policy Handbook that is found on the State website and will soon be found on our Hunter and Coastal Venturer website. This should answer if not all, most of your questions. The most important thing to remember and is set out on page 16 and 17 of the abovementioned policy is “ ... the ceremony belongs to the Venturer, the recipient of the Award. Accordingly, it is up to the Venturer to decide on the type, timing and location of the ceremony.” “Who organises it? The Unit Council and the Group Committee should find out what the Venturer wants, and organise invitations, venue, catering, seating, programmes and so on to suit. ... “ I hope the above has answered some of your questions and once you read the policy that should clarify the process for you. I have had the pleasure over the last number of weeks in attending the following: • Queen Scout Presentation for Tonia Brooks of 1st Avoca Beach Venturer Unit on the 7th August 2016 • Queen Scout Presentation for both Dana Gill and Michaela Harnett of 1st Byattunga Venturer Unit on the 14th August 2016 • Queen Scout Presentation at Government House Sydney on the 13th August 2016. This presentation was the 130th presentation and had 21 Venturers and 2 Baden- Powell Scout Awardees. Out of the 21 Venturers the Hunter and Coastal Region had 4 Venturers: ŠŠ Tonia Brooks- 1st Avoca Beach ŠŠ Dana Gill- 1st Byattunga ŠŠ Michaela Harnett- 1st Byattunga ŠŠ Angus Mitchell- 1st Warners Bay The Venturers were presented their ‘Royal Certificate’ by Chief Scout and Governor of New South Wales His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales. Following the presentation all the Venturers/ Rovers, family and friends had refreshments that were served on the Colonnade of Government House.
