FLYING DENTISTS ASSOCIATION

Fall Board Meeting New Orleans Oct. 9-10, 2015 So Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton will have visited New Orleans by the time the FDA will be present to enjoy what the city has to offer. Now, I cannot promise there will be no TFRs due to the 16 or so Republicans or the hand full of Democrats flying over the country to win over your vote. On the weekend of Oct 9 and 10 there will be no political talk amongst the Flying Dentists! So that we can all enjoy the BIG EASY. It has been 10 years since the great hurricane Katrina hit the region with all her furry and yes you will see a few left over damaged buildings but the city is up and running at its full capacity. (Note: The reason for the above political types having placed themselves in the spotlight of New Orleans) Remember last month’s list of what not to do. If you

have a little lapse in memory you can look back at last month’s newsletter. We will be landing at KNEW (New Orleans Lakefront airport) with Flightline First as our guest FBO! Check your AFD and see that the FBO is right next to the old terminal building at the south end of the field. Please make sure Stacy has your N-numbers so that we can follow you on flight aware and have transportation ready to take you to your home away from home, Sheraton on Canal Street. If you have not made your reservations to hold your room, GET RIGHT ON THAT! (888-827-7033) As you know this hotel will be FULL of like minded flying dentists ready to enjoy the sites of New Orleans. F LY I N G New Orleans (Con’t from p.1) If you are heading to the Big Easy commercially you will be going into Louis Armstrong International. As I have stated before I am NOT going to make any arraignments for what to do in the city. The hotel have qualified concierge people to help with your every want and need to get the full experience of the city. There is the WWII Museum which is incredible if that is your thing. (The National WWII Museum is an unforgettable way to experience World War II—from industrial efforts on the home front to the combat experience of the American soldier abroad—and honor the generation that sacrificed so much to secure our freedom). A stroll down Bourbon Street to enjoy a Hurricane Drink and Gater Bites at Pat O’Brien’s. Standing in line to get into Acme Oyster House to have your fill of barbecued Oysters. No not KC style Dr Rhoades! A stroll to Cafe Beignet to enjoy a few of New Orleans type flat donuts called Beignets. (Take a walk down the south side of the building and watch the little delights being prepared before you own eyes through the powder and grease covered windows.)

For you adventurous types schedule an Air Boat Swamp Tour or a Ghost Tour of the area. A fun event that can be scheduled is a cooking class at the New Orleans School of Cooking for those that want to learn the fine art of New Orleans cajun cooking. There will be a welcome gathering at the hotel on Friday night with light hor-d’oervres and a cash bar. This will be a great time to get with people to see what everyone wants to do or just go on your own and explore the BIG Easy. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the city built below sea level!!!! Boy will those normally aspirated airplanes just perform like rocket ships! This flat lander will not know what to do with all that extra power. See you soon. Bart Bycroft Fearless Leader & Anti-Tour Guide!

PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Hello All, I am off to another meeting after returning from a Kansas Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery meeting. Yes, all of us are a part of a lot of different organizations. A few of mine are as follows: ADA, AAOMS, KDA, KSOMS, MWOMS and Salina Dental Society. I pay a large amount of money to belong to those groups but the BEST value for my money is the money I spend flying to meet my favorite group, the Flying Dentist Association. This is a FAMILY. I go to other meetings but they are gatherings of like minded individuals not Family! Do not get me wrong, I have a good time at those other group functions but it is NOT the FDA family. Now, how can we get more people involved with the flying dentists? I know there are more than our members that are dental types that fly in the general aviation community, so lets get the word out. Our very own, Amy Hahn, Ned Markey and Steve Mowery, are starting to embark on a new membership endeavor over the internet, social media, etc. I must admit I am a tech illiterate but these three individuals have what is necessary to get this accomplished,

(i.e.: they know a guy that knows a guy….you know what I mean!!!) Time will only tell how this works out but it is a great new idea to further investigate. Now, you can do your part helping get the personal information out to any dentist who enjoys flying, that is willing to listen.

turn to me and say, “Hey Bycroft, where is the next long cross country trip you have planned and where the heck were you last weekend?” My response is, “Well the Flying Dentists are off to (fill in the destination)”. These hangar buddies of mine fly with me every trip I take following me on flight aware. They would say, “That was quite a trip I should do that someday!” All I can say back is, “I really enjoy getting together with the Flying Dentists." Hope this letter gets your attention to pull that plane of yours out of the hangar and join your family at the next FDA adventure. PS: The next one is the Big Easy in October!! Remember, Keep the Oily Side Down and the Wheels Extended to Land!

Bring someone with you to our next meeting for great continuing education and places to fly that they would never have an opportunity to visit. See if they agree that this is a great organization.

See you in New Orleans! Bart and Kate Bycroft

Every Saturday morning in Salina a group of Pilots get together to hangar fly. Now, I miss quite a few of these coffee drinking opportunities due to my love of the FDA. Every week that I am there someone in the group will

take the ferry over and stay at the Mooring base hotel for the night. Stacy can help with any of your air, hotel and transfer needs.

There has been a lot of excitement for this “bucket list” trip! So far we have 12 yachts booked. There is an update on our departure time. Some have you have chosen to board your yachts at 12pm others have chosen 6pm on Saturday the 5th for a morning departure on the 6th. Because of this we are planning our first CE cession on Saturday morning. Then, shopping to provision your yacht, pre sail briefing, and dinner that evening. Because of all this business, it is still better to arrive Thursday or Friday night to catch the ferry from St. Thomas. Plus, you may want to spend some time on St. Thomas or Tortola before we leave. Some of us are planning a refresher dive on Friday. (Details to follow) If you can make it in Saturday by 3pm into St. Thomas you will be able to catch the ferry over to Tortola and board your yacht at 6pm. Keep in mind that the 4:14pm ferry (last one of the day), is very crowded. If you cannot be there you will need to arrive on Friday the 4th. You can spend the night in St. Thomas and head over to Tortola on Saturday to board the yacht or you can fly into St. Thomas early on Friday,

The mooring's offers round trip transfers from St. Thomas to Yacht base for $100.00 per person. The Mariner Inn Friday Night room rates are: Garden view room $220.00 + tax Marina View room $265.00 + tax Ocean View room $395.00 + tax On 3/12/16 everyone will return to our Tortola Moorings base by noon and disembark for home. Our last morning anchorage will be a short sail. If booking your own air, please book your flight after 1pm so you will not have to rush off the yacht and catch the ferry then catch a cab to the airport. If you would like to go but don’t have a captain or feel qualified to sail yourself or just want to share expenses, there is a yacht with one or two extra rooms. Let Stacy know and she will put you in touch. For any questions or to make travel arrangements contact Stacy Hufziger 727-391-1750 [email protected]

FLYING 2016 Annual Meeting Cody, Wyoming - June 24-27 What is BBCOW? And why is it one of the premiere tourist destinations in Cody? The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is a museum about not only Buffalo Bill Cody but of the culture of the wild west. History, wildlife, Indian art and the largest gun collection you will ever see are just a few of its attractions. So large your ticket is a 2 day pass. Our agenda that long weekend will leave you plenty of time to see it and many other Cody attractions:

determined by him and the outfitter the week of our arrival. Lots of options also for wild, mild, or easy floats on this river as it leaves Yellowstone and flows down the mountain to Cody. Fly your LSA or Homebuilt. Gary Stewart has been getting in touch with any of you that we know who have these lovely birds. We hope you can fly them to Cody and show off your planes. (Mama may want to airline it, we know). A couple of you I know are using this as your incentive to get your bird finished this winter….we are anxious to see your work. FDA Kid Reunion: We are getting a tremendous response from your kids. Many of you dads have already emailed me your adult kid’s emails so we may send them these newsletters and reach out to them. Many of them plan to return to an FDA Annual Meeting with their own families and kids. All of you young adults who attended in the past as kids are welcome.

6PM - Gun fight in the street in front of the Irma Hotel Mon.-Sat. 8PM - Rodeo every night Country music shows nightly Cody Trolley tours from our hotel daily Buffalo Bill Dam (world’s largest in 1910) Dude Ranches before or after our meeting? Drive 52 miles West of Cody and you are in Yellowstone. We have left Sunday open for everyone to see the park. Suggested routes for your day trips will be provided and you can see it at your leisure. Lunch beside Old Faithful??? We’ll see. Float the Shoshone. Lynn Keener is chairing this Tuesday afternoon trip and the details and location of our float will be

Steve Combs has our CE all lined up for Saturday and Monday. Jim Stockhouse and Steve Mowery are talking to potential airplane exhibitors from the West. Cirrus is returning with 2 planes next summer. Save the Dates, Finish your homebuilt, Tell your adult kids Ray & Kathy Rhoades

Attention Homebuilt and Light Sport Owners The 2016 National Meeting is putting the spotlight on a segment of our fleet that we don’t always see. Since the vast majority of our members will be able to access Cody, WY without having to climb over big mountains it is a chance to gather some of the smaller (but not lesser) aircraft for additional fun and flying. Some of you own multiple aircraft and this is to encourage you to possibly bring a different one than you might normally pick to fly. Whether it is an Experimental /Homebuilt, Light Sport, Ultralight, Gyrocopter or a Vintage we want to see them at Cody. There will be some prizes for such things as the longest distance traveled divided by the horsepower. It’ll be fun for everyone to see the aircraft and even more fun to fly them in such a beautiful setting. Remember the trick to hauling lots of baggage to Cody even if your aircraft has a limited useful load. Mooney pilots have been using this technique for years. It is called Unlimited Packing Strategies and is usually referred to as UPS. FLYING FDA Regional News Western District

Central District

Greetings from the Western District. Currently there is not much in the way of FDA news or events from this part of the country to report. In late July/early August, I attended the Canada fishing trip with my 25 year old daughter, Cari. It was a great trip being at Eagles’ Nest Lodge with friends and I got to spend some quality time with my daughter. Our trip home had a few moments of excitement but that sometimes goes with cross country flying.

As I sat down next to Steve Sudderth at our last board meeting in Boyne, little did I know then that we would hatch a great idea before the meeting had ended…

I am still looking at the possibility of doing a breakfast gettogether in Northern California just to meet other west coast FDA’ers. However, with my October/November schedule, that may have to wait until next spring. The national meeting will be in Cody, WY this next summer. I hope we can have some more western district members attend. This is as close as a national meeting will be for a while and it’s looking to be a great program so far. I hope everyone has had a great summer and I look forward to catching up with all of my FDA friends and colleagues at the next Flying Dentists function.

I’d been scouting locations to plan our Central District fly-in, and was leaning toward Nashville… only to find out when I was talking to Steve that he was looking at the same spot for his fly-in. Why not join another district to plan our fly-in?? Say, Central and Eastern, for example! The more, the merrier tends to be true at events such as these, and always so with the Flying Dentists. Details will soon follow on specifics for the meeting, as Steve heals his heart and we finalize hotel arrangements. Get your head geared toward considering making this trip, have fun, with friends and enjoy all of this: • Billy Forbess, whom is in and out of Nashville frequently, suggested KJWN John Tune airport, which has a good FBO he uses. • Lots to do and see: Country Music Hall of Fame, RCA Studio B and Music Row, The Grand Ole Opry, Ryman theater, singer/songwriter nights featured at The Listening Café, art galleries, and excellent restaurants.

Safe flying until then.

• Rich American History: Three U.S. Presidents called Tennessee home – Andrew Jackson, James Polk, and Andrew Johnson all have history in and around Nashville for you to visit and see.

Bill Holmes

Look forward to seeing you on Honky Tonk Highway! Amy Hahn

Eastern District Hello from the Eastern District. Im still recouping from a successful surgery. Thank you for you prayers. I’ll catch you next month. Steve Sudderth

FLYING RE-CAP FDA CANADA FISHING TRIP FDA ANGLING TEAM 2015 Clear skies and cool nights were the rule this year for our annual trek to Manitoba. Eagle Nest Lodge on the Winnipeg River was home for 3 days of Dental CE and fishing for 19 FDA Fishermen and women. Yes, 7 spouses were on the trip and Anne Hubbard led after fish Yoga classes each evening at the hot tub deck.....yea, we really roughed it. Although fishing for Walleye and Northern Pike we caught an amazing number of Smallmouth Bass for late July were hooked too. I witnessed Kathy Rhoades land a 16 1/2 inch and Mike Schell land two 19 inch Smallmouth in one morning.

Big Walleye winner was Bruce Bachman with a 26" one and Paul Mowery caught the big pike, 44". Paul also fished the longest and hardest of anyone on the trip, he deserved his win. We plan to return again next year instead of waiting 2 years and will publish the dates this winter. The camp holds 30 and they will hold it exclusively for our group. Hope to see you in New Orleans, Ray Rhoades

FLYING Dr. Paul Spenadel

S W NE

This summer the Dental Department at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (Long Island, NY) celebrated a milestone by graduating its 40th residency class. The department began the residency program in 1970's; an era known for many facets of change. Since then graduates from the program have gone on to become leaders in the industry, serving as deans at dental schools, presidents of dental associations and practicing dentists at Jamaica Hospital. One of the dentist that has remained with Jamaica Hospital since his graduation in the 1970's, is Dr. Paul Spenadel.

Today, Paul is a spry 90 years old and is still practicing-without missing a beat. Dr. Senadel is know as the "The Godfather" to the Dental Department because of his many years of dedication and commitment. Article from the Medisys Health Network

Sending a great big FDA hug, love and prayers for Devon Weinreich! Devon just completed her last radiation treatment in San Diego for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. To follow Devons journey and story, go to: http://posthope.org/devons-journey/ about. The Weinreich's live in Fountain Hills, AZ, so I am sure they are all glad to be back together at home.
