Welcome Back ...NDA staff is ready to rock and roll! Happy September to all! We hope your first month of school is going well. Sometimes it is difficult to get back into a school routine after a relaxing summer. It can take a few weeks for students and parents to get comfortable with daily tasks and routines. Most experienced homeschool families would suggest you take a breath and have patience
knowing that as time goes by, it gets easier. This summer, the office staff did their very best to order and distribute curriculum to all families. We hope you have what you need in your hands. If orders were placed the last few weeks, please be patient as it takes a few weeks for special orders to arrive.
We are looking forward to our back to school celebrations on September 9th in Alturas and on September 26th in Redding. A great time to meet our staff and one another. I look forward to seeing you there! All the best, Laura VanAcker, NDA Director

Counselor Corner with Bob Eaton COLLEGE QUEST CQ will be held on September 22 from 5-8 at Shasta College. This is a great opportunity to explore post high school options and connect with admission representatives from the various schools. This event occurs only once a year, so please take advantage of it for you and your student. There is no charge for admission. PSATThere are two openings left for college-bound 10th and 11th grade students to sign up for this practice SAT. The cost is $14 and it will be held on Wednesday , October 15 at
National University. The PSAT is a valuable tool for those students thinking of going to a 4-year college.
More information will be given to those interested parents at the academic conferences.
ACT ASPIRE— This practice ACT test is designed to measure career and college readiness for 9th and 10th graders. Unfortunately, there are no spots open for 9th graders, but we do have 4 spots open for 10th graders. There is no cost for this test as NDA has paid for it. It too is a great opportunity to see how your student compares with other college-students. It will be given at National University on Tuesday, October 21 at National University.

[email protected] or 209-3150. Welcome back and I hope you all have a great school year. Hope to see you soon!

Literacy Coach Connection Building Phonological Awareness Skills for Reading Success Phonological awareness skills are important in order to develop good reading skills. They are the basis for reading. They include the awareness of the sounds of a language and the manipulation of those sounds. The best way for your child to acquire these skills is to "play" with sounds, words and syllables. When
you and your child engage in word play, your child learns to recognize patterns and to use this knowledge to make connections between the spoken and written language.
slip through the knot on the end of the string. Say a word and have your child string one bead for each syllable he/she hears. For example, the word 'September" would need three beads.
TRY THIS!
For more word play activities, please email me at
