Update from the Covenant of the Blue Moon Church As the Covenant of the Blue Moon Church works toward its return to public service, scheduled for 2012, we want to share our progress with the public.

We are proud to announce the elevation of two of our members. Please welcome our newest First Degree Priestess, Branwen Rhys, and our newest Second Degree Priestess, Lanie Kozanitis. Last month, we reopened public classes. The Wheel of the Year is now accepting new students for its monthly classes. Year and a Day 101 and Year and a Day 201 classes begin January 2012. Applications are being accepted and reviewed now. As our return to public service approaches, we find that our funds are lacking. Therefore, our members have made items for us to sell to raise money. Pictures, descriptions and prices are posted throughout this issue. Please search these items out as you read the articles that follow. Please contact Lanie at [email protected] to purchase any of these items. The sales are first come, first serve; however, some of the items have more than one in stock. Until then, we will continue to keep you informed of any new developments or changes. It is our wish to keep the lines of communications open and to continue helping to meet the spiritual needs of the public. Blessings, CBMC Elders 4

When This is the Time..... ~Star Burst

When the wind blows and the trees talk, When the spirit knows and the souls walk. This is the time when love and hope can become one, When dreams can no longer be undone, Where all souls can shine like the sun! When the voices of nature speak In our dreams while we are asleep. When the caresses of the dead awaken our souls Whispering to us that we are still in control. This is the time when our own inner power can ignite, Within us and for the world be it's light, And the only hope in sight. When the shadows begin to grow stronger than ever When you balance light and darkness together. This is when all hope can be reborn once more, When we tear away the doors. Of our hearts, minds, and souls And allow us to grow. 7

Mabon ~Earthwalker

The wheel is turning to Mabon. The Wheel of the Year is a tool that not only tracks changes in the world around us, but is also a practical tool that is applicable to our lives! It has many lessons we can learn. Mabon is the Autumnal Equinox, one of two days that night and day are equal. The Lord and Lady stand as equals. The Lord prepares to depart, his strength and power fading every day. This is sad, because the days are getting shorter. It is also a happy thing for most, the days are not so hot! This is the time of the second harvest. The first harvest of the grains are in. The harvest has moved on to things like fruits, nuts and berries. This is considered the witches' Thanksgiving. There is much to celebrate, as the world provides us with her bounty. But we also know that we need to prepare for the coming darkness and cold. Even though there is more then plenty now, it will not last forever. This is a good time to focus on being prepared and giving thanks for what we have in our lives. I am going to start with the easiest one. There 8

are many ways we can give thanks. Many can be quick and easy things, some can be elaborate and take more time. I have found giving thanks for the blessings in my life helps me enjoy my life more. It also helps me focus on the positive things, and brush off the things that don't go so well. One way I like to say thanks for my blessings is to say a little thank you to the Gods after I crawl into bed. It just takes me a minute or two to get all comfortable and close my eyes. I thank the Lord and Lady for the things I feel have blessed me this day. A small blessing is to thank the Gods and all that are responsible for the food on your plate before you eat it. Say a thank you as you walk out the door in the morning. I am sure you could come up with a few ways to say thanks for what brings you happiness and joy. This is also a good time to take some time to think about being prepared. We know that there is going to be a time real soon when we will not have the abundance that we do now. What are you doing to be ready? We need to be prepared for emergencies, like loss of power from earthquake or wind. Do you have some water and food stashed away? Do you have an aid kit to take care of those small emergencies? Do you have an emergency contact that is long distance? Then there are even harder things to prepare for. Are you saving for your future? Do you have your Will in order? What about tissue and organ donation; do you want to do that? For those of us with kids, is everything in order if something happens to us? Mabon is a time of balance. That balance is very short lived. This is a good time to think about our future. A time to think about the fact that the wheel will keep on turning. We know that soon the wheel will turn to Samhain, the wheel is ever turning! I think it would be great to have people post about ways they give thinks for the blessings in your life. What do you do that connects you with the gifts in your life? Please take a moment and post something to our Yahoo Group or on our Facebook Page. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bluemooncoven2/ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Covenant-of-the-Blue-Moon/289687570606

So, you think you want to join a coven? ~Lark

http://www.tangledmoon.org/ Perhaps you have just learned about Wicca and want the experience found in a group, or perhaps you have been practicing as a solitary and feel the need for some company. Belonging to a coven can be a wonderful experience, or it can be a terrible mistake. Before you go looking for a group to join, you should do some careful thinking about just what kind of group you would feel comfortable with. Here's some thing you might want to consider. What kind of tradition or flavor of Wicca appeals to you? This may involve some careful reading and research on your part to find out how the traditions differ. Are you in to a more set ritual structure with a hierarchical flavor, if so one of the Gardnerian groups might fit your needs? If you are more laid back and don't want a group with a rigid class system, they some of the more eclectic groups would be better. Would you prefer to be in a women-only group, then perhaps a Diana tradition would be better. What is your feeling being naked in front of others, even others of the opposite sex? Many if not most Gardnerian groups practice "skyclad". If this makes you uncomfortable, this might not be the best choice. There are some groups which practice a symbolic Great Rite (representative of the sexual union between the God and the Goddess which brings fertility to the Earth), while others may practice an actual rite. The actual rite may be done apart from the circle or in the circle itself. Some traditions require the Great Rite between student and initiator as part of the initiation process. How do you feel about this?

10

Do you prefer a small group of like-minded people in someone's living room, or are you happy to be part of a larger group that is more open and may even hold public rituals? So, now you may have found a group that you think might be the ticket for you. Here are some more questions to start asking before you decide to join. When does the group hold circles? Some covens gather on the specific night of the full moon or holiday, while others acknowledge the concerns of the mundane world by holding their celebrations on the weekends closest to the event. How does your work or school schedule match up. If work keeps you from going to rituals, you might as well not go with this group. What are the groups' feelings on the use of mind altering substances, be it alcohol or other perhaps illegal drugs? Are they used in circle? Do you have the right to refuse to use them without pressure from the rest of the group? If they are used in circle, could being present when drugs are used jeopardize your job? How do members of the group you’re considering treat each other outside of circle? Is the group simply a Go-To-Sabbat bunch of folks who go their own way during the rest of the week? Or are they friends outside of circle who are always available to each other in times of need? Ideally a coven functions as a clan or extended family. What is the position of the High Pries/ess in relationship to the rest of the circle? Are they the kind of leader who dictates to everyone what they will do and how they will act? Or do they listen to the concerns of others in the group? Are they someone who is respected for their knowledge and spirituality but equal with the rest in the site of the Gods? Remember that one of the signs of a cult is an all-powerful and all-knowing leader. Does the HP/HPS have enough knowledge of what it is that they are doing to facilitate the functions of the group and to safely lead a magical working? If the rest of the group is just learning, it is very helpful to have at least one fully trained individual to lead the way. Do you feel welcome and safe in the group? When you stand in circle you bear with you the passwords, Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. If you cannot feel that way about those around you, especially in circle, you will eventually be unhappy with your choice. Being part of a close-knit coven can be a marvelous experience. I am closer to some of my fellow coven members than I am to my blood kin. This is the way it is supposed to feel. Sometimes it is just luck to find a group like this, but careful preparation in advance can help the odds in finding one. Remember it is better to continue as a solitary that to join with a group which does not help you meet your spiritual needs.

Solitary Mabon Ritual ~by Lanie Kozanitis

Here is a list of supplies you will need for this ritual: standard altar items (athame, candles, lighter, element representations, etc) Small cutting board and knife Apple libation bowl (necessary only for indoor rituals) Begin your ritual by preparing your body (bathe), mind (review your ritual making sure you have all your supplies) and spirit (ground and center) to enter ritual space. Set up your altar in your usual way. Cast your circle and call the quarters to guard it. Welcome Spirit to your circle and then call the Lord and Lady to join you. You may call the Lord and Lady in your own words, or use these: “Great Lord and Lady! I call to you and invite you to witness and bless our rite. Hail and Welcome.” The purpose of this ritual is to celebrate Mabon: the balance of the darkness and the light. Mabon is the fall equinox, a time of balance. Day and Night are equal. It is the second of the 3 great harvests (Lughnassadh, Mabon and Samhain). Mabon is also the last large and abundant harvest, which means you can now see just how well you've done and plan for the winter. It is a time of thanksgiving for the abundance. 13

Day and night are equal, but soon, darkness will conquer the light, taking us into the dark half of the year, a time to reflect on those passed over, and on those yet to come. A time to reflect on the seeds we have sewn over the year, and upon the harvest we now reap. The apple is a symbol of the harvest season, of the Crone Goddess, and of the life force, which animates deity. Look at your apple. You see a fruit that gives life, but you also see a fruit whose seeds give death. As it was and ever shall be, two halves of a whole, beginnings and endings – all are one. Place your apple on the cutting board so that the bottom of the apple faces to your left and the top of the apple faces to your right. Now cut the apple in half to separate the top from the bottom. Now separate the two halves and look inside. When you cut an apple, you see our most sacred symbol. The five pointed star representing the five elements. You also see a circle surrounding it representing the wheel of life, death and rebirth. It is the season to mourn the loss of life and light. But just as the apple gives both life and death, so do our beloved deities. The same seeds that give death, will also bring new life, when planted in the mother's soil. This apple represents our great bounty. It is time to give thanks and charge your apple with that energy to serve as a reminder of the many blessings we have in our lives. Hold half the apple in your hands. Think about its meaning and then speak out loud to deity. Give verbal thanks to the Lord and Lady for the great abundance in your life. Ask them to continue blessing your life and loved ones as they have. Chant: “We are the flow, we are the ebb, we are the weavers and we are the web”. You can listen to the chant at this web address: http://www.en-chant-ment.ca/FlowA.mp3 When finished chanting, say “This apple has now been charged. As I eat, I bring this energy into my body.” Libate a piece of the apple to the Gods and then eat some. When finished, thank the Lord and Lady for joining your celebration, and then release your circle in your usual manner. With this ritual, you can easily invite a friend or two. I hope you enjoy your Mabon celebration!

The Circle Garden By Marcie Griffin

September 2011 September in the garden is a time of balance. The sun is still warm but the night time brings the chill of autumn. The days have gotten shorter and the nights have gotten longer until they have reached the balance that we recognize as fall. There is a balance of work and pleasure. We can still enjoy the lush growth as the colors begin to turn, but it is also harvest time and there is work to be done. It is time to gather seeds from spent flower heads and store them away for next spring planting. We can still plant quick growing crops like leaf lettuce, radishes, winter cabbage and mustard greens as we harvest the longer growing crops of summer like tomatoes and peppers. Herbs should be gathered and hung to dry for winter use as well. Always show honor and respect to the plants in the garden as it is their sacrifice that sustains us and aids us on our spiritual path. When I plan to work magic I like to meditate with specific plants in the garden and communicate to it on a spiritual level my magical intentions. I ask the plant if it would like to attune its energies to assist me in this way and if the plant agrees I give it some time to attune before I harvest. (If the plant does not agree, re-evaluate your magical intentions.) In this way, not only am I 16

drawing on the plants own energetic attributes, but the plant is attuning itself to my specific needs. Such an advocate deserves our honor and respect at all times, but especially at harvest time when their sacrifice is greatest. For herbs, I have a 5 foot long 1x1 piece of lumber with nails spaced about every 6 inches. It is mounted on the wall in the laundry room where I hang bunches of herbs from the nails to dry. Other herbs that can’t be hung, like rose hips, chamomile and calendula flowers are laid out on paper towels on top of a drying rack (one of the 2 oven racks… never use more than one at a time anyway.) on a shelf in the kitchen.

Other garden tasks at this time include a bit of late season fertilizer for perennials, trees and shrubs. Use an organic fertilizer with the middle number higher than the others. The numbers represent the ratios of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium in the fertilizer. Phosphorus, in the middle, helps the plant grow strong roots that will help it survive through the winter, which is what Harvest time is all about. Enjoy the Mothers Bounty.

Gem of the Month for September ~Karahkat

For our beautiful September babies, the gem of the month is a Sapphire. The glowing gem comes in many colors however is most renowned for the deep blues. Sapphires do grade with a hardness of 9, and are second only to diamonds in durability, making the Sapphire a perfect alternative to the traditional diamond wedding ring. Sapphire is the gemstone variety of the mineral corundum Al2O3 – sapphire can be any colour except red. Gem-quality red corundum is called ruby – gems falling outside the relatively narrow spectrum of colour defined by ruby are pink sapphires. Corundum in its pure state is colourless but naturally formed specimens are usually coloured very dark blue, green or brown and almost opaque. The transparent gem varieties show a wide range of colours; titanium causes the typical blue colour of sapphire while varying amounts of iron and chromium result in yellow, green, pink or orange sapphires. Some sapphires contain unusual tiny needle-like inclusions, and are cut in a cabochon shape to display a six-rayed white star. 19

The sapphire is often given at the 5th ,23rd and 45th years of Marriage. Most sapphires have been heated to enhance color, but a large variety of more exotic treatments exist in the marketplace. Ancient priests and sorcerers honored the Sapphire above all gems. They believed the stone enabled them to see and foretell the future. Sapphires are found primarily in Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, Australia and East Africa. Major sources of sapphire include Thailand, Sri Lanka, Australia, USA (Montana), China and Madagascar. The most desirable source for fine sapphire is Kashmir. Kashmir sapphire has a rich velvety color that is quite unique but due to extreme rarity, is very expensive and hard to find. Until the late 1980′s Australia produced over 70% of the worlds commercial grade sapphire – much of this from the Queensland Gemfields resource. This has resulted in Australian sapphire developing a reputation for being over dark and of low quality. Even though most commercial grade sapphire now comes from other resources such as China, this reputation has persisted. The Sapphire is said to relieve mental depression, promote peace and happiness, and stimulate motivation and goal orientation. It is also believed that sapphires had magical healing powers and were used as a poison antidote, to stop bleeding, and to cure eye problems and other ailments.

Autism in the Community by Katharine Squires

Last month, my son, Marcus, and I went on a camping trip with the Blue Moon Coven. The first day was amazing. He did extremely well with the other children, but the next two days were a different matter. He hit sensory overload and wouldn’t come out of the tent. I would try to get him to come out and he would have a meltdown in terror. When he was a bit younger, it was easy to forget he was autistic. We spend most of our time at home alone together, where all is familiar and routine for him. So when these times hit, and I am faced with the reality of it all, it’s easy to feel alone. People try to be supportive and some have even learned about working with special needs children, yet they still don't quite understand. It’s not the same when you live with the child and see all the struggles they have not only with their environment, but with themselves. Recently, though, I had the opportunity to visit with a friend from high school and her 8 year old daughter who is also on the Autism Spectrum. It was amazing being able to reconnect with her and to meet her daughter. Her daughter is a beautiful sweetheart and has many of the same behaviors as Marcus. We were able to swap stories and really talk. For the first time in a while, I felt a connection. 21

I do still have big concerns about his future. As he gets older (even at three) I’m noticing more and more traits coming out. I see him flapping his hands. He lacks certain motor functions (he still has a really hard time hopping or jumping). He still doesn’t indicate to us that he needs a fresh diaper, even when it’s really full, etc. I see on TV adults with autism and they are living in halfway houses or group homes, even some more functioning than Marcus. It terrifies me that he could end up that way. Ideally, I will take care of him for as long as he needs it. I can hope that one day doctors will find a way to help him function better on his own. But what if something happens to his dad and I? Not a lovely thought, I realize, but a discussion every parent should have on behalf of their child. My first concern is to make sure I have someone in mind to take care of him should anything happen. Mike and I discussed it and chose his sister Lynette. We spoke to her about it and she said yes. Now we have to set up an official Last Will providing instructions for him. The hardest part is finances. We have such a hard time with our finances as it is, to try to plan for the future is even harder. He will continue to collect Social Security, but it doesn't covers much. My hope is to reach a point where we can start a trust fund for him. In the mean time, I focus my time on him. He is starting school soon and I do as well. Since we can’t afford the therapy he so desperately needs and since I have always had an interest in psychology, I’ve decided to go to school to become a therapist. I’ve decided that I’m going to become the therapist he needs and possibly do some sliding scale work with other children. Every child with autism deserves the opportunity to get the help they need. I’ve heard too many stories of parents selling their homes and going into severe debt just to pay the therapist. Our children deserve better than that. In closing I will impart on you what I have learned from my children, love the people who touch your lives, laugh as much as possible, and be patient, even if you don’t understand.
