JOIN THE 2017 CHRISTMAS FAIRE PLANNING TEAM

Please bring your favorite side dish, salad or dessert to share. Volunteer opportunities are available for adults and CCD students. Sign-up sheets are at the back of the Church or use our link at

The Christmas Faire is only a couple months away and the planning team will be meeting on Wednesday, September 20, at 7:00 pm in the Parish Activity Center for its first planning meeting. The Christmas Faire is a 25-plus year tradition at St. Athanasius. Over the 25 years it has grown into an amazing two-day community event — a showcase of teamwork and a wonderful way to support the life of the parish. Over the years we have heard from people who have come as far as Beverly eagerly awaiting our Christmas Faire. As seasoned volunteers retire we are always looking for new volunteers to help this well planned event continue. We would love to have you on our team! This year’s Faire is Friday, November 17, 5-9 pm and Saturday, November 18, 10 am-2 pm.

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b44aaa723a3fe3-parish When signing up please fill in what you will bring to share. The Link will be sent as an email too. Questions or comments? Contact Dana Percy @[email protected] or 781-956-2810.

To the St. Athanasius Parish Community WOW! Where did the summer go? The kids are back to school, the air is cooler, and it’s apple-picking time. By the time you read this, half of the month of September will be gone. Dare I say, Thanksgiving and Christmas are not that far away and ONLY 2 months until the St. Athanasius Christmas Faire. As in past years, parishioners have generously donated items for the Knitting Corner and my hope is that this year will be no exception. The Prayer Shawl group has been busy all year making hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, baby blankets and more for the Faire. Thank you for your continued support.

Besides the weekend of the Faire, there are volunteer opportunities throughout the month of November, particularly the week leading up to the Faire. If you are interested in being a part of the Christmas Faire planning team please come to the planning meeting this Wednesday. If you have any questions or would like to help but can’t make the meeting, please contact our Christmas Faire Co-Chairs, Joanne Fitzpatrick or Michele Barrette at [email protected]

More notably, we also knit shawls, lap blankets, preemie hats, chemo caps, and baby blankets for those in need in Hospice and Hospitals. If there is someone you know who is homebound, elderly, or sick who would benefit from receiving a shawl or lap blanket (along with the prayers and blessings of the Parish Community), please stop by the Parish Office. The staff is always ready to assist you in making your selection from a wide variety of colors and designs. Please note, the Prayer Shawl Group meets on the 2nd & 4th Monday of each month after the 9:00 am Mass in the Parish Center. We welcome new members; stop in anytime.

24 Sunday in Ordinary Time Sheila, our fifth grade teacher’s 8-year old daughter, wanted a puppy and she was begging at every opportunity and promising to take care of it. Knowing full well it would end up being her responsibility, the teacher made arrangements with her brother to dog-sit for a week while he was on vacation. The first few days went pretty well, but by the fourth day ‘doggy fatigue’ was setting in. It seems that the young dog enthusiast failed to account for multiple daily walks, feedings, bathing, playtime and ‘cleaning up’. At the end of the week, Sheila informed her mom that she had changed her mind and would prefer a goldfish instead. Faith is a commitment to a way of life, not just a set of intellectual beliefs. More than just accepting the idea that Jesus is the Savior, faith means that we continue to forgive so that we live by God’s standards, even when it is demanding, inconvenient or difficult. Forgiveness and reconciliation are the basis of the Christian life and if we compromise them, we compromise our life, both temporal and eternal. We live our faith when we follow the teaching and example of Jesus, when we reach out to those who have hurt us and offer forgiveness over and over and over. We have the Church, the sacraments and the example of the saints—all of which are part of our community of faith that strengthens and supports our baptismal commitment to follow the Lord. There can be no ‘faith fatigue’. Our God sets the example; our faith is renewed and strengthened when we put it into practice. ~James Gaffney, St. George Publishing, [email protected]
