September 16, 2011 Dear Appalachian State University Fraternity and Sorority Community, On September 7, 2011 Appalachian State University suspended the local chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha and Pi Kappa Phi fraternities for one year each for failing to meet the minimum requirements outlined in the Fraternity and Sorority Community’s Standards of Excellence program. The Standards of Excellence (SOE) program defines campus expectations for the Fraternity/Sorority Community and is based on a set of shared values and expectations that are rooted in intellectual and social development. Both organizations have been non-compliant with the SOE program for four or more semesters. During the term of suspension both chapters are no longer recognized by the University as a student organization and have lost all privileges afforded to registered student organizations. Following the completion of suspension both organizations may request to be recognized by the University and the Interfraternity Council at the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester. The University has been in communication with representatives from both Inter/National organizations regarding the suspension of their respective chapters. Greek-letter organizations are a valued part of Appalachian State’s campus life and a fraternity can provide Appalachian State University students valuable leadership training, friendships that can last a lifetime, and an important connection to campus when they graduate and become Appalachian State alumni. Members of our fraternities and sororities are dedicated to helping others, and annually provide thousands of hours of community service while also raising funds in support of various philanthropies. Our Greek-letter organizations also sponsor numerous activities that enhance social life on campus while offering a variety of avenues through which students develop their leadership abilities. These opportunities greatly enhance the Appalachian State learning experience and benefit our students in the years following graduation. A strong and vibrant fraternity and sorority community will continue to be an essential component of the Appalachian State experience, and the University will maintain its commitment to working with our fraternities and sororities to help them prepare well-rounded men and women committed to the highest values, ideals and standards.
