WHEELER SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS BE SAFE, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE AND A PROBLEM SOLVER
MESSAGE FROM MRS. LOGAN Last Saturday morning I followed my normal fall routine of putting on my red shirt and planning my day around watching the Husker Football Game. However, last Saturday when the tunnel walk began, the questions and thoughts that went through my mind were different than that of past game days. Excitement and anticipation were replaced with concern and worry. I began to reflect on the players and their own thinking. The Huskers are leading the nation in the most interceptions. This Husker season is only the second time in the the last fifty-seven years that the season has started with a negative record of 1 win and 2 losses. With that level of defeat in their mind, how did the players find that internal drive to walk through that tunnel, on to the field and continue to fight the fight? Persistence is defined as the firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty of opposition. Persistence is a valuable skill that all humans need for success. A paper from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology stated that the ability for children to persevere may be as essential as talent or IQ in success. Persistence is a trait that can be taught and learned. Daily, students at Wheeler experience challenges; difficult math problems, peer struggles at recess, the stamina to get through a long book or learning a new skill in physical education class. As caring adults, it is our natural instinct to want to rescue them. However, we know that true internal pride is only achieved through overcoming productive struggles. We remind children of their successes, help craft their mindset to a “Not Yet” thinking, and become their greatest cheerleader. Persistence is essential to reaching “The cjha Best of Me”! This Friday night the Huskers will return to the field again and I will wear my red. Even after a Rutgers win, the struggle will remain. While the Husker persistence to show up and strive to the best version of themselves may not lead to Heisman Trophies or National Championships, each of those players will ultimately benefit from their opportunity to persist through a challenge!
