This is great resource to access when you are absent or have lost something. Bookmark this site on your home computer. EVERYTHING needed for class is uploaded here. Google Blogger: tolisanoperiod_____.blogspot.com (insert period number after the word “period”) First Response Post (Due Tuesday, midnight) A solid response begins with a well-formed opinion on the argument. You need to support your stance by referencing the text using MLA format, PLUS further explain the importance, maybe including your own experiences as additional support.  Grammar, spelling, and mechanics count  Self-check your post for clarity of thought  Keep in 3rd person  Avoid repeating the same information Follow Up Response Post (Due Thursday, midnight) Select another student’s post and begin with whether or not you agree or disagree with their side. Extend the discussion with a new idea; don’t just repeat or summarize what the other person already posted.

Short Story Annotation Tools: Highlighter (yellow), Pen, Text 1.

Making Observations: While you read, highlight key observations. Don’t mark too much – otherwise, nothing will stand out. Just highlighting the text is NOT annotating.

2.

Finding Patterns: Use the margin area to make comments that don’t label, BUT go beyond the obvious. This might include comments on the following:  External Conflicts – Major action/changes in plot?  Internal Conflicts – Beliefs, values, motivation, thoughts, etc.?  Characterization – What do their actions/reactions/consequences of their actions tell you about the characters?  Author’s Purpose – Why did an action occur?  Predictions, Questions, Confusions?

3.

Drawing Conclusions: After finishing the story draw conclusions at the end of the document. What are some bigger ideas (subjective)? How does it tie back to the essential question?

Characterization - STEAL S (Speech) – What do the characters say? How is it said? (word choice & tone) T (Thoughts) – Private thoughts, motivation, values, beliefs (internal conflict) E (Effect) – Character reaction to others ; others reaction to the character A (Actions) – Behavior (external conflict)? Consequences? L (looks) – Physical attributes

FATt Sentence (Similar to TAGS) F: FOCUS Include these three points:  Subject – What is main focus of the text? (literal)  Active Verb – Use present tense.  Impact – What influence does it have on the reader? (Subjective) A: AUTHOR’S NAME Always use the author’s full name the first time you mention him/her. T: TITLE OF THE WORK Check the mechanics of your title. Books are underlined or italicized—NEVER BOTH. Articles, poems, and essays use quotation marks. t: text type Clarify for the reader what kind of text it is; for example, and article, editorial, memoir, blog, etc.

Do I have to write in the sentence in the order above? The above elements of a FATt sentence can appear in a variety of orders. Editing your sentence – keep the following in mind.  Consider typing a RD; this allows you to edit to make it right  Tense – present only  3rd person only – the reader, the audience  1 sentence only, watch sentence construction to avoid creating a run on sentence  Watch spelling, mechanics, capitalization and punctuation  Read ALOUD for clarity Use Strong Active Verbs: expresses, discusses, states, disputes, persuades, suggest, advocates, challenges, focuses, supports, presents, emphasizes, provides, argues, claims, attacks, reflects, comments, describes, distinguishes, reveals, implies, refers, displays
