Sculpture X Regional Undergraduate Exhibition Call for Entries Whitdel Arts 1250 Hubbard, Suite B1 Detroit, MI 48209 Sponsored by the Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University, Whitdel Arts, Detroit, MI presents a call for entries to regional undergraduate sculpture students for an exhibition in conjunction with the Sculpture X Symposium hosted by the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, Wayne State University, Detroit, October 9-10, 2015. The exhibition dates are October 2 – November 14, 2015. ABOUT THE GALLERY Whitdel Arts is a volunteer group of artists and all-around creative individuals, serving the community through contemporary art exhibitions and arts-based activities and professional development. Their main home is in Southwest Detroit’s Hubbard Farms neighborhood, in the historic Whitdel building. The 1800 sq. foot professional exhibition space is run by Whitdel Arts’ volunteers and is supported by its members base of artists and general supporters. The Whitdel building is also home to Ladybug Studios and affordable housing. http://www.whitdelarts.com ABOUT THE SCULPTURE X SYMPOSIUM The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, Wayne State University, will host Sculpture X Symposium 2015: Value Added, with co-sponsorship by the Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University, the Penny Stamps School of Art and Design, University of Michigan, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. The symposium will take place October 9-10, on the campus of Wayne State University, with exhibitions on and off campus. SculptureX is a teaching and networking resource and promotional platform formed to catalyze collaborations among teaching arts institutions in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and western New York. It was founded in 2010 by faculty and administrators at two regional institutions in Ohio: The Sculpture Center (Ann Albano) and Cleveland Institute of Art (Saul Ostrow, Charles Tucker, Lane Cooper) - and – at two institutions in Pennsylvania: Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (Lisa Austin, Dietrich Wegner) and the Erie Art Museum (John Vanco). Today, Ann Albano and her staff at The Sculpture Center manage SculptureX, with assistance from both founding and participating institutions. The SculptureX Symposiums have been organized and funded by host institutions: Cleveland Institute of Art (2010, 2011, 2012), Columbus College of Art and Design (2013, 2014), and the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History at Wayne State University (2015). http://sculpturex.art.wayne.edu ELIGIBILITY Open to undergraduate sculptors and installation and expanded media students from institutions located within a 300 mile radius of Detroit, Michigan. ACCEPTED WORKS Submissions will be juried and selected by a committee from Whitdel Arts. Selections will be based on quality, presentation, and proper application format. Selected works can be hand delivered or shipped. Instructions will be included in a notification e-mail letter. The artist entrant will be responsible for transporting their work to and from the gallery. Every precaution will be taken to handle artwork with the utmost care. However, Whitdel Arts will not be responsible for damage or loss from any cause. All artists are responsible for insurance of their work while is it at Whitdel Arts between the drop off date and the day it is picked up/returned. NOTIFICATION Notification of accepted and non-accepted works will be sent via email no later than August 31, 2015. AWARDS The Whitdel Arts Board of Directors will select exhibiting artists for a solo or group show at Whitdel Arts during its 2016 exhibition season. CONDITIONS Students can submit a maximum of two artworks. Artwork must be original. Copies of published photos are not acceptable. Applicants are encouraged, but not required to submit work with a maximum size of 48” in any direction. Works must fit through a 6’ by 8’ door and weigh less than 70 pounds. Artists may not substitute another work for an accepted work, alter a work after submission, nor withdraw a work after it has been accepted. Whitdel Arts reserves the right to refuse any entry which does not match the images submitted or meet the criteria. The gallery reserves the right to refuse work that is not appropriate for the space. ENTRY PROCEDURE All entries must be submitted via email. No mailed in entries, slides or CDs will be accepted. Entries must be submitted to
[email protected]. Each artist can submit up to 2 works, with one overall jpg image for each work and one detail image for each work, if necessary. Submissions of images must be received by no later than August 25, 2015. Images must be in: • • • • •
jpeg format 72 dpi resolution No more than 2 mb Longest dimension should be at 1000 pixels (maximum) Name each image as follows: lastname_firstname_entrynumber.jpg (example: king_jamie_01.jpg, king_jamie_02.jpg) OR lastname_firstname_entrynumber_detail.jpg
In addition, a corresponding slide list must be sent with submission. On the slide list, please include: • •
Entry number, Artist’s name, Title, Medium, Date, Dimensions, Price (Example: 01 – Jamie King, Self-Portrait, serigraph, 2011, 18” x 24”, $200.00) If work is not for sale, please indicate NFS. If no price is labeled for an artwork, it will be presumed NFS.
Also, please include a brief artist’s statement, no more than 200 words. Artists will be notified of jurying results no later than August 31, 2015 via email.
