The Saranac Lake Central School District is within the Village of Saranac Lake, N.Y. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,406. The village is named after Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes, which are nearby. The Village of Saranac Lake covers parts of three towns (Harrietstown, St. Armand and North Elba) and two counties, Franklin and Essex. The Village lies within the boundaries of the Adirondack Park, about seven miles from Lake Placid. These two villages, along with nearby Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes Region. Saranac Lake was named the best small town in New York State and ranked 11th in the United States in The 100 Best Small Towns in America. In 1998, The National Civic League named Saranac Lake an All-America City and in 2006, the Village was named one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Saranac Lake Schools The High School was built in 1968 and presently houses grades 9-12, with approximately 450 students. Our school district also includes one 6th – 8th grade middle school and two kindergarten – 5th grade elementary schools.

To meet graduation requirement, students must earn a minimum of 22 units of credit, including the following: 4 units of English 4 units of Social Studies 1 unit of Art or Music 3 units of Mathematics 1 unit of a Foreign Language 3 units of Science 2 units of Physical Education ½ unit of Health 3 units of Elective Courses Students must also successfully pass New York State Regents Examinations in Comprehensive English, Global History and Geography, US History and Government, Integrated Algebra and a laboratory science. Check with the Guidance Department for Regents and Advanced Regents diploma requirements. Juniors and seniors have an opportunity to attend the Adirondack Educational Center for half of the school day. Career & Technical Education courses include: Automotive Technology, Building Trades/Carpentry, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Health Occupations, Natural Resource Conservation and New Vision Health Program. If demand warrants, Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English, US History, Physics, Biology, Calculus, Spanish and French are offered at SLHS. In addition, college-credit courses are offered in cooperation with area colleges: AP Calculus (MAT241 PSC), Wellness (HED101 NCCC), Economics (ECO102 NCCC), American Government (POS102 NCCC), French 5 (FRE202 NCCC), Introduction to the Organization of American States (LAS110 SUNY Plattsburgh), US History (HIS151 & HIS152 NCCC), Pre-Calculus (MAT180 PSC), Spanish 4/5 (SPA201 NCCC), New Vision Program (NCCC) and Digital Photography (ART1245 NCCC) Class Period: 38 minutes in length, meeting five times weekly In addition to the daily class period, Regents science courses have a laboratory period either once or twice weekly.
