School of International Studies Publish & Flourish Workshop Series Facilitators: A/Prof Matt Fitzpatrick & Prof Susanne Schech Place:
Room 014 Social Sciences South
Time:
14:00 – 15:50
This series offers practical information, guidance and cooperation to SIS postgraduate students and early career researchers on publishing their research. It consists of four workshops in which you will work through critical stages in the process of developing a manuscript: preparing a preliminary abstract; journal selection; submission; and responding to the reviewers’ assessment. Participants should be able to commit to all four workshops and aim to have a publication ready for submission at the end of the series (i.e. within 3 months). This workshop series is best suited to those who have a thesis chapter, seminar presentation or conference paper which they want to turn into a journal publication. A limited number of places are available so please register by Tuesday 11 March by sending a 200 word abstract of your planned article to
[email protected]
Workshop dates:
Session 1: Friday 14 March 2014 Session 2: Friday 28 March 2014 Session 3: Friday 9 May 2014 Session 4: Friday 6 June 2014
You are strongly encouraged to also make use of other opportunities to share your research and build academic skills in the School of International Studies: participate in the weekly History Seminar Series, the Graduate Colloquium with the Fulbright Chair in American Studies, or in the SIS RHD conference (usually held in November). Check the SIS website or with the School Office for details.
Session 1: Friday 14 March 2014 at 14:00 – 15:50 pm Topic: Abstracts
Publishing Projects: Considering Structures and Writing
Set Task for Session 1: Write a short abstract (200 words) of the publication you are planning. Participants should bring along to the first session a draft of a written piece of work they are planning to publish, or an outline of something they hope to write – be it an article, a chapter or a conference paper. It can also be good to bring along a ‘failed’ or ‘rejected’ manuscript from which it would be good to learn for the future. Please send your abstract to
[email protected] by Tuesday 11 March at the latest. Session 1 Content: • Participants will present their short abstract (200 words) of their ‘publication’ to the group for comment and discussion. • The group will critically evaluate the use of language, clarity of argument, structure, content proposed, and likely outlet for publication.
One of the written pieces of work you bring to the session will form the basis of the second session which is concerned with choosing the most suitable outlet for your journal article.
Session 2: Friday 28 March 2014 at 14:00 – 15:50 pm Topic:
Making a Choice/ Evaluation of Excellence in Publishing
Set Tasks for Session 2: 1) Library based or on-line (eg. ISI Web of Knowledge) research identifying likely journals for your presented ‘abstract and outline’. The journals (no more than 3 or 4) should be ranked along a range of criteria: scholarly reputation; subject specialism; ease/difficulty of acceptance; other personal/political reasons for ranking.
2) Reading and reviewing an article provided by the facilitators: what makes it an excellent example of its type?
Session 2 Content: • Discussions of ‘journal research’ and ranking decisions • Decision about the journal to select • Dissection of the ‘excellent’ article – what can we learn?
Session 3: Friday 9 May 2014 at 14:00 – 15:50 pm Topic:
Reviewing and Positive Critical Engagement
Set Task for Session 3: Those who have papers that are a reasonable stage for submission will put their paper in the First Draft Drop Box on FLO SIS RHD by Monday 5 May and will be allocated one of the convenors who will act as a gentle reviewer. The reader will write about 1 page of feedback notes. These will form the basis of Session 3. Session 3 Content:
• Initial feedback on the ‘circulated’ papers will be presented and reviewers and authors will have the chance for a positive engagement about their articles. • The facilitators will draw out common features of critical reviews so we can all learn from the range of reviews.
(Those who don’t feel they have an article they want to submit at this stage may withdraw from the workshop – please let Susanne Schech know. You can perhaps join again next year!)
Session 4: Friday 6 June 2014 at 14:00 – 15:50 pm Topic:
Getting Your Research into Journals: The Review Process
Set Task for Session 4: Re-writing articles in the light of ‘review’ process and re-circulation of revised papers for second review and commentary. Your article will be distributed to one convenor and one peer from this group for comment before the workshop session. You must be prepared to read a draft from one of your peers within 5 days and bring your peer feedback notes on it to the session. Please submit your draft to SECOND DRAFT BOX on FLO SIS RHD by Friday 30 May. Session 4 Content: • • • •
Review of choice of journal and checking on appropriateness Planning for actual submission Receiving the reviewers’ reports Responding to the Editor
