Interview with Ms. Audrey Do you think that being a teacher is more difficult than being a headmistress? Both roles are not easy and they both have different demands. Being a head is being a leader and a motivator of a team of people who work very hard. What do you prefer being a teacher or a head mistress? I can’t say because I used to love being a teacher and I am still a teacher at heart. Do you have any hobbies? I used to play the piano but unfortunately because of the demands of my job I don’t practice any more. I love reading too. I read before I sleep. Do you like watching any sport? Yes. I love ice skating. I am a fan of an Italian team.

Have you always wanted to become a teacher? Initially I wanted to become a doctor. Then I wanted to become a teacher. How long have you been working at San Andrea? 11 to 12 years. Have you worked in other schools? Yes, two government schools. Do you have any relatives who work as teachers or were teachers? Yes, My father and his side of the family (all) What is most difficult about your position (being a head)? Taking decisions which might not be liked by everybody but which I have to take because I would believe that they are for the best of the school.

What did you feel when you became the head? Honoured and very aware of the huge responsibility I was entrusted with. What is most rewarding about your job? When I hear students saying how happy they are at school. Students who have left saying that they miss the school and how well prepared they were for their post-secondary schools. I also feel very proud of students who take their work very seriously and achieve very high standards. The most important in school is that students work hard to fulfill their potential.

A deeper look (3) – The book of nature and the book of Sacred Scripture 1. Stephen Hawking meets the Pope? During the last few weeks the venue for mass changed as the same space was being used for the Stephen Hawking Science & Technology Project, an interesting initiative where scientific principles are applied on a practical level to everyday life. This sharing of a common space made me think about questions related to science and faith. Are the two approaches to life contrary to each other? Is science contrary to faith? Is faith an obstacle to scientific research? I found the answer that Pope Benedict XVI gave to a group of young people quite interesting. He refers to the “great Galileo” who was convinced that God has given us two books: the book of Sacred Scripture and the book of nature. According to Galileo, the language of nature is mathematics: “so it is the language of God, a language of the Creator”. The Pope expresses his admiration for mathematics as a marvellous invention of the human spirit that enables us to have access to the nature of the universe and makes it possible for us to use it. For example, we can identify laws that govern the universe in such a way that can help us to use alternative sources of energy and address the problem of pollution. For the Pope the fact that the laws present in nature and the laws invented by human beings coincide, points to an underlying “Reason” who is the author of both. We cannot prove this as in an experiment, but this option gives technology its reliability. (He states that theories of chaos are limited, “because if chaos had the upper

when Scriptures are being read in Church, it is the Word of God that I am listening to.” If these echoes speak of opportunities, there is one that hints at a possible risk. When doubts are repeated again and again but not addressed appropriately, they risk being accepted as facts. I would disagree with the view that all opinions have the same value. The search for truth, not only in school, but in life, is essential for us to be human. 3. Towards Summer

hand, all technology would become impossible. Only because our mathematics is reliable, is technology reliable”). 2. Da Vinci’s echoes It is only natural that I take some interest in the echoes of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code in San Andrea. For a number of students and teachers it was an opportunity to put the principles learnt in literature or history into practice. For example, one cannot expect a book of fiction to be a source of historical truth.. For others it proved to be an opportunity to voice their questions and doubts in matters relating to the Sacred Scripture and Christianity. This can challenge Christians to study how the Gospels were written and grow towards a more mature faith. One of the teachers told me how he appreciated the value of the Gospels anew. It can also help non-Christians appreciate how believers value Scriptures: not as a history book, even less as a fiction, but as sacred, offering a faith dimension to life. As a young person affirmed: “I realized that

Finally, some raise questions about the Church. Are believers hiding the truth about Jesus Christ in order to keep their power? As I reflected on this I thought about Summer. For three weeks I will be giving a number of talks in Egypt to a group of young nuns of the Missionaries of Charity (also know as Mother Teresa sisters) who dedicate their life to work with the poorest of the poor. I believe that their faith in Jesus Christ risen from the dead is not a way how to gain more money or keep their power but a source of joy and love that knows no boundaries. I rejoice in that faith.

From the Head Now that the year is almost over, we can think back and evaluate the year. We have accomplished so much. The students, together with their teachers, have achieved outstanding reults even when competing with other schools. The students of French have won the Francofete competition organised by the education division a competition which was also open to state and church schools. In sports we have won most inter-schools tournaments or else we placed in high positions. In athletics the students are excelling when competing with athletes from different clubs some even breaking national records. Throughout the year, the school provided the students with so many unique opportunities. Different events were organised by the different departments: Jum Nicolo Isouard for Maltese, Maths Olympiads, Sports Days, Stephen Hawking Science and Technology Project, the drama production based on Mulan, the many presentations organised by the English Department, Question pour un Champion, Campionissimo, a number of Spiritual Activities including Eucharistic Days, an a flambeaux procession and a Fun Day. Other activities include the camps, field trips, educational visits locally and abroad and so many others. We have participated in a Cyberfair competition and placed first in our category. Throughout the year, parents had the opportunity to attend many seminars organised by the PSHE teachers and other meetings. During the day, students may actively participate in a number of break time clubs.

Ms Audrey Galea days you have until the exam by the number of subjects and topics you need to revise. The school has provided you with detailed revision lists of the topics you need to revise. At the same time go through your notes and check that your notes are in order. Think about topics that will need more revision time -perhaps they are more detailed or you found them more difficult when studying them.

Regular breaks are important if you’re going to stay alert while revising. A five-minute break every half-hour for you to stretch your legs is better than a 30 minute break after five hours’ revision. Get up, make a drink, tidy your room,– you’ll come back refreshed and ready to carry on. These breaks will also help you absorb the information and avoid overload.

Make a revision plan

Include a leisure activity in your revision plan once or twice times a week in order to take your mind off things.

When you know how many days you need to revise each topic, (calculate between now and mid-June), you’ll be able to make revision part of your daily routine. However, you need to be realistic about the time you have: ~ mark on the plan those things you need to do, such as being at school and other activities ~ split the remaining time into half-hourly slots ~ break each topic on your revision checklist down into smaller pieces that can be revised in 30 minutes and fill your slots with these pieces Remember – give more time overall to difficult or detailed topics, but don’t plan the unachievable. You won’t be able to revise a whole topic in one slot, for instance. Reading your revision notes

My only wish is that the students and their parents truly appreciate all the hard work entailed in organising such high standard activities as listed on our year chronicle. Our main goal is one: that all our students get the quality education they deserve.

From your notes, teacher’s booklets and books, write down your own notes. The school will also make available last year’s examinations papers. When looking at your notes, keep in mind why you’re reading them.

Revision tips for all students : getting organized By making a plan and organising your time you can divide your revision into manageable chunks. This will increase your chances of remembering the important facts and avoiding last-minute stress, both of which will lead to better exam performance.

~ reading for detail is when you need to gain a good understanding of the text read it at a slower pace than normal and ask questions while reading, or even read it aloud

Find out what you need to know

~ skimming is useful for getting the general idea of a large piece of text - read each paragraph quickly and identify the main ideas in each one

Make your revision plan as early as possible. This will allow you to work out how much time to spend revising each day and, just as importantly, when to take break.

~ scanning is used when you are looking for a specific piece of information - move your eyes quickly over the text, homing in on, for example, sub-headings, names, numbers, dates and quotes

Write a revision checklist Start by dividing the number of

Whilst studying remove all distractions !

Look after yourself

A healthy mind needs a healthy body so look after yourself while revising. Lots of sleep and regular exercise will help you stay alert. Your body needs fuel, so eat plenty of easily digestible foods - fresh vegetables and fruit will help keep your energy levels up. Getting support If you are experiencing emotional problems, such as issues with family or friends, or bullying, your revision might be affected and you may need to seek outside help. Try to get support before your revision suffers. Few tips Managing time ~ you need to gain the maximum benefit from your time. ~ find more time, make more time, and use it efficiently. ~ you will learn more from regular periods of study. Finding time ~ make a timetable and find free periods of time. ~ create realistic targets - and stick to them. ~ be prepared for changes in your lifestyle. ~ spend less time in bed, on computer or watching TV. Making time ~ spend less time socialising - or study with your friends. ~ spend less time watching television. ~ ask your family for understanding and support even when it comes to checking out what you have studied.. Using time ~ combine studying and revision with other activities. ~ listen to audio tapes whilst travelling. ~ get used to reading in your spare moments. ~ give yourself a treat after each session.

May, the month dedicated to Our Lady On Tuesday, 2nd May the San Andrea School Chaplaincy, under the guidance of Fr. Jimmy, our new school chaplain organised a number of spiritual activities.

Eucharist was present for prayers and adoration. A number of teachers took it in turns to stay vigil with the Eucharist.

During morning assembly, a simple ceremony was held. Students and teachers brought flowers and candles which were presented to Our Lady during the Crowning ceremony.

Throughout the day, the Prayer Room was kept open and Jesus in the

Try and discover which styles best accentuate your features. Magazines can be a source of inspiration, but can make anyone feel inadequate about their looks. The media bombards us with images of super models who are often too thin and too "perfect" to be true. Keep in mind that you want to look like "you" and not like someone else. When you' re in good health and you take care of yourself on the inside, it' s bound to radiate to the outside! Start off with a great looking smile. It is often the first thing that people will notice about you and it is an easy thing to maintain if you take proper care of your teeth and gums. Nothing is more attractive than natural beauty. In the afternoon, the Eucharist was taken to the Gym and kept there till 6pm when the Ursuline sisters from Tarxien and Gwardamangia accompanied by a number of children from the two homes joined the head of school, Ms. Audrey, a number of teachers, parents and students for prayers. Fr.Jimmy led us in prayer. The day came to a close with a simple aux flambeau procession in the sports grounds. In the background the Ave Maria was playing, teachers recited the rosary in different languages whilst students carried the statue of Our Lady followed in procession by all those who attended.

Students from the early grades at Senior School joined together to form a choir for the event and hymns were sung.

Makeup should be used to enhance your best features. makeup should not show. It is easy to over do it and it takes lots of practice to precise your techniques. Skincare: for the boys and girls Proper skin care is very important. Start by cleansing, toning, and moisturizing your skin. Such daily routine should be on top of anyone’s priority list. The prime cause of pimples and blackheads is usually the cleansing routine. If you do not keep the skin clear of make-up and debris you cannot have a smooth looking

complexion. Repeat the cleansing routine in the morning and in the evening. Before bedtime it is important to remove all traces of makeup. Never be tempted to go to sleep without cleansing your face. This will prevent your pores from becoming clogged which enable bacteria to grow. Daily beauty care is not sufficient to cleanse the epidermis (skin) from impurities that produce a dull complexion. The skin has to be deeply cleansed at least once a week. Using a suitable facial mask will give your complexion a beautiful glow. Always use products recommendable for your skin type. If your skin is oily, you have a greasy skin type. If you are oily in the T zone and dry on the cheeks, you are probably a combination skin. If you are moderately to extremely dry, go for products suitable for a dry skin. Last but not least, check that the product has been dermatologically approved and preferably not tested on animals. GIFT OF THE GAB (2) In the second issue of ‘The Insider’ I invited readers to identify three idiomatic expressions which I had included in my piece. I had hinted that the first meaningful word in each expression began with an ‘l’. Well, readers, the guessing time is over and, as promised, the answers are here written down in the sequence that they appear in the article. The first one is ‘[to be at a] loss for words’. In this case the person does not know what to do or say. They certainly do not have the gift of the gab but probably watch or stare with their mouths agape, utterly gobsmacked, unable to string two words together. The next idiom is ‘[have the] last word’, which is clearly the opposite of the previous one. The person is not the type to bite their tongues or eat their words. On the contrary, they make sure to put in a final statement that sees them as definite winners in an argument. The last expression is ‘[the]

Ms Simone Zammit long and short of it’, which may come in handy when a person wishes to sidetrack too much or unnecessary detail. Instead, they neatly sum up and fast forward to a conclusion, avoiding the risk of being too long-winded. Alright, I can take a hint when it comes my way! I will move on to exploring the origin of more words, phrases and expressions. The first one is ‘Mufti Day’. This is very popular with young teenagers in Britain, and I think that it will likewise be a seller at our school. The idea is that on ‘Mufti Day’ school children come to school in their own choice of clothes, rather than in school uniform. My guess is that designer pairs of jeans and trainers, teamed with crop tops and pink zippers for the girls and chunky sweaters for the boys, would be the garb of the day. Sounds stupendous, doesn’t it? ‘Mufti Day’ originates in the Middle East where British officers would relax in dressing gowns, smoking caps and slippers. This appearance was similar

Fashion world Get a head start on the new season. Spring/summer 2006 is going to be fresh and simple. First and foremost white is VERY important and is a must have in your wardrobe! Colours for this season go more on the softer and neutral side but with shimmer and glimmer, chocolate brown, navy blue, red and turquoise are in as well. White, golden tones and flesh tones are especially important. Blush is a strong colour for spring clothes. Stripes will still be fashionable checks and floral patters are important as well. Think dresses, The dress is back, baby doll dresses, wrap dresses, gentle puffball skirt dresses, slip dresses, dropped waist dresses, Exotic print wrap dresses are all fashionable. Other main styles are baggy cropped trousers, cropped turn back cuff

to that of a costume worn by Muslim legal experts, called ‘muftis’. This military phrase was taken back to Britain by returning British officers and soon passed into everyday use. Many companies, in fact, have a ‘mufti day’ and allow employees to dress casually for a small donation to charity. Now there’s a thought! The next expression brings to mind Ted Hughes. The grade 10s are at present studying one of his poems. They may think that I have been inspired by him, and they may well be right. The phrase is ‘[being] tarred with the same brush’, which means to be part of a group considered as having the same flaws and weaknesses. The expression is an old farming term, which comes from the practice of treating the sores of an entire flock of sheep. The sores could be coated by a brush dipped in tar. All of the infected sheep would be ‘tarred with the same brush’, but this brush would never be used on a healthy animal for fear of contamination.

Thea Vella, Jenna Azzopardi and Julia Arrigo jeans, and tailored knee shorts. Skirts are going to be fuller. Studs are everywhere on both accessories and now on clothes. Shoes

Platform shoes, wedge heels both high and low, bamboo cut out wedge heels, ballet pumps, Roman sandals, strap pumps, buckles and flowers are a feature of footwear. Bags

Bags grow larger and larger. This is the season of the oversized bag and any tone of metallic bag. Tan leather bags, white leather bags and deep dyed straw or raffia bags are also in the line-up for summer fashion trends.

COCO CHANEL Not just a designer, not just big name, but also an icon in the fashion industry. Coco Chanel was born in 1883 as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel and was raised in a French orphanage. In 1912 she was helped out by a wealthy aristocrat, Arthur Capel, who helped her open her first shop in 1913 - a milliners (hat shop). However it wasn' t until the 1920s that she started gaining popularity. It was during the Great Depression that Chanel opened her now historically famous shop at 31 rue Cambon. A few years later, around the mid 1920s, Chanel' s designs grew in popularity and the word was getting around to those who could afford it. Sadly, in 1971, Coco Chanel died. Karl Lagerfeld has kept the Chanel label after her death and has kept the name going.

How to Do Homework without Throwing Up

Ms Clare Padovani

(adapted from ‘How to do Homework Without Throwing Up’ by Trevor Romain) Everybody who goes to school does homework. You are not alone. And they feel just as sick as you do when they have to do it. You cannot escape homework. It will follow you wherever you go. Even to the North Pole. Get to your homework before it gets to you. NO! Your teacher will not believe the toilet ate your homework.

WARNING! Homework has serious side effects. You might become smart and successful if you do all your homework!

2. “I don’t understand it.” (Ask your teacher for help before the school day is over. Do all the parts you can do, then figure out where you’re stuck. At home, do not be afraid to ask an adult or your older brother or sister to help you.)

5. “I forget to bring my books home.” (Remind yourself each day before you leave school to do a “Backpack Check.” Do you have everything you need? Write little reminders to yourself on your notebooks, in your locker, on your hand – whatever works for you.)

3. “I can’t ever finish it.” (Find out why. Are you distracted? Are you having trouble in a certain subject? Ask your teacher or a parent for some advice about managing your time.)

The nicest thing about doing your homework is the feeling you get when it’s DONE!

PLAYSTATION GAMES REVIEW Tomb Raider: Legend When the original Tomb Raider came out, the PSone became the world’s most favourite piece of hardware. Tomb Raider was so successful that it spawned five sequels. However, when the sixth instalment came out on PS2, it was a disaster. Now that Lara is back, what’s the result? It’s back to classic tomb raiding with this one. This time around, however, Lara has her own personal support team back at Croft Manor. As the game progresses they give you useful information over your headset. Also, there is a storyline flowing through the game: one of the artefacts is linked to Lara’s family past. There are many changes in Lara’s latest. The guns now have limited ammo, which make the game more realistic. Her movement is more graceful; she now jumps with an outstretched

hand, making a fall more and more unlikely. Even if you do miss, a quick tab of the triangle button will save you, and Lara’s turn around on the spot style is gone (thankfully). Combat and exploring is spread out evenly, making the game more enjoyable. The lack of challenge is clearly evident, and the game’s too short. This is a certainly outstanding game, only marred down by its lack of challenge and short lifespan. Fans of the originals will love this, but if you never thought the originals were good games, don’t bother playing this. Fahrenheit As far as I can remember, games always had only one pattern: kill bad guys, find bomb, impress lady, win game. Ever wondered what it would be like to play a depressing, psychological murder thriller where you are the

Philip Attard murderer? When Lucas Kane kills a man in the restroom of a diner, he finds himself confused on why he killed the man in the first place. As he sets out to find the reason why he killed the man, he is also on the run from the investigators in charge of the case; Carla and Tyler. What follows is a series of events concerning possession, AIs (aliens) and the Indigo Child (a gifted child). Playing as the three main characters, the actions are all carried out only by a slight twitch of the right analog stick. However, some action scenes are done by moving both sticks at the same time. It is a rather slow game, but if you want to play something really different, you’ll like it. The main speciality of the game is that whatever you do affects the rest of the game and results in a series of consequential endings. Apart from the slowness, it’s an overall very good game. Playing this game is something very worthwhile and it’s really easy, but it’s not too easy either. The plot is really vast and playing the game over and over again really helps you to appreciate all the endings. Nearly everyone will fall in love with this game as it’s outstanding.

MULAN

Ms Daphne Said and Karl Bonello

Click, click, click click click, By the doorway Mulan weaves . . . . . These were the first lines that kicked off the drama production put up by the Senior school students at San Andrea. It was the corroborative effort of a group of 180 students together with their teachers who worked extremely hard throughout the 2nd term in order to create such a fantastic experience for their audience. The Disney story of Mulan is a well-known classic story of a young woman who goes through great lengths to help her father and her country. The main roles were taken up by Grade 10, 11 and 12 students who are studying drama for their O’Level, an opportunity which San Andrea School gives to its students. Rachel DeMartino & Chris Zahra both captured the audience with their remarkable voices when they sang, Reflection & I’ll Make A Man Out Of You respectively. Mushu, played exceptionally well by Gerth Bajada kept the audience highly entertained with all his humorous comments. The colourful scenery painted by the Art teacher Ms. Nadine Briffa and the numerous amounts of props all helped to turn the school’s amphitheatre into another world. However one cannot express the satisfaction that could be seen on the eyes of all parents and teachers when all the 180 students congregated on stage for the final number of True to Your Heart. It was a memorable experience for all, one that will remain imprinted in the minds of all present that night. MS DAPHNE SAID ———————————————————— After long days of preparation, the day arrived for the school ‘Annual Production’. The school play was called ‘Mulan’. As the play was outdoors, the weather confounded the teachers, especially Ms.Daphne, our Drama teacher, but after all we just made it. We missed many lessons for rehearsals so everyone was excited. At half-past six, I arrived at school, meeting two friends of mine. We talked and hoped that the play would be a success. As time passed we changed to our first-scene costumes and the teachers applied make-up. Then the play started, we were watching everything from the waiting room. Children were on stand-by and after their performance they rushed to the make-up room and then straight to the bathrooms to change. There were sound and light technicians and also people in charge of changing scenes. Many props were needed. Some of the children were very good actors and audience cheered when a song or action was over. From the top of the amphitheatre, Ms.Daphne was viewing everything carefully, holding a script in her hands and instructing the technicians which light or music to use. All in all everyone had fun and the play was a success. At quarter-past nine the play was over and the audience clapped and cheered. Ms.Audrey and Ms.Daphne’s faces were beaming with satisfaction. Everyone packed, left for home and had a good night’s sleep! KARL BONELLO Issue 3

SAN ANDREA STUDENT COUNCIL 2005-2006 Mr. Trevor Francis Templeman and Timothy Bartolo

Evaluation of the operation of San Andrea Student Council (SASC) Year 2005/2006 Dear Parents and students, First and foremost, I would like to remind you that the Student Council was the first ever at San Andrea. Needless to say that being so, the Student Council took some time to start working effectively. In fact it was during the second week of the second term that the school council was up and running. I have trained the members of the Student Council to acquire several skills including, knowing how to take minutes, writing agendas, holding discussions, reporting back to class, and eventually representing their fellow students which in turns has helped them to communicate and co-operate with school staff and making suggestions about improving school facilities. Regarding the performance of the StuLink Person dent Council members I feel that it was their first year and so they could not perform at a hundred percent. However, I believe that a bit more effort could have been put forth by every one, so as to improve on the efficiency, with which we worked and also perhaps improve on the professionalism of our work. Moreover, I feel that we did not get the feedback we expected from students many of which seemed to think that the council has done nothing! Unfortunately this is an untrue and an unfair assumption as we have strived to do our best in their interests! Mr Trevor

The SASC came up with a system so as to process the suggestions put forward by you, the students. First we decided on an issue to be tackled during a particular week. We chose particular issues based on the amount Timmy Bartolo Chairperson of complaints we were receiving about it. After deciding the issue for the week informed you the students and you could come during your specific time and day of the week so as to suggest solutions on how to solve the issue. On Friday, when the general meeting was held we filtered your suggestions and edited them. The Student Council then wrote a letter to Ms. Audrey with our complaint and all the solutions proposed. This was done for the following issues; Canteen, Tests, Bathrooms and Camp.

The Canteen was by far the most seriously taken issue tackled. A meeting was held with board representatives in which many illuminating facts were brought to light. For example, the canteen was not supplying many of the food items agreed in the contract with the school. The meeting focused on providing a healthy menu with a few exceptions such as ice creams (which have been introduced) and one or two sweets (which have also been introduced). The board representatives promised to hold a meeting with the canteen contractor so as to correct all the instances where he

I would like to express a very big well done to all Student Council members who I feel have tried with all their might to follow the system and provide you the students with the solutions to your complaints and succeeded 99.9% of the time. A thanks is in order to Ms. Audrey who has believed in us and taken us seriously throughout the year. I would also like to extend the biggest thanks possible to Mr. Trevor, without whom the Student Council would have broken down in a matter of days, as he provided us with our training as well as guided us every step of the way. I truly feel reassured when I remember that our Super School, and its students, are being looked after by such a dedicated team of Students and Teachers alike!

Timmy Bartolo (SASC Chairperson)

Mr. Trevor

Regarding tests, bathrooms and camp, letters were sent to Ms. Audrey and she promised a meeting, which is now set for the 4th of May, so as to discuss the actual proposals and eventually set them in motion. The student council has also been asked to organise a fundraising, which is currently its top priority and is working fervently on.

Yours truly,

Yours sincerely,

was not complying with the negotiated contract. The representatives also promised to get back. to us as a follow up meeting and to send us a copy of the contract both of which were not done due to unknown circumstances.

Keeping fit I always enjoy writing articles on fitness. In my previous articles I emphasized on weight loss through endurance training and also on building general strength. Summer is approaching, at this time of the year I always notice a high increase in people joining gyms with the sole intention of doing crash courses in weight loss or muscle building. The ‘panic alarm’ is on and I view the response from most people as very unlogical and unhealthy. This is time for practising outdoors and enjoying the beautiful (if not unique) weather that our island can offer. I cannot understand why only a low percentage of people join swimming classes or get on a bike for an hour of easy cycling. This time of the year is also great for easy jogging or fast walking in places

Mr Kevin Zammit

Just the way I see it! such as the Sliema front, Qawra seafront or any other place that offers a nice and safe environment. I believe that the gym sessions should get less time in summer and more in winter. Right now we shall be concentrating more on enjoying our physical activities and appreciating nice sceneries at the same time. I always notice that people from other countries are very aware of the importance of being healthy and when abroad I always remain impressed with the high amount of people of all ages doing physical activities such as power walking or jogging.

FRIENDSHIP

Everybody needs friends. We can feel very sad and lonely if we have no friends to be around with. Here are some friendship skills you can work on to start and keep a friendship going: •

TALK – try to be interesting, keep up with what is going on around you eg. TV, sports, music, shared interests – so that you have something to talk about

LISTEN to what your friends are saying and ask questions about it

PRAISE your friends when they do something well

USE YOUR MANNERS – say please and thank you. Friends like to be pleasant to each other

BE HELPFUL – do things for your friends without keeping a Issue 3

In the past few years I’ve noticed a big improvement in Malta and I’m convinced that people are now more knowledgeable about health and fitness, but we still need to change our mentality and increase our activity. Proven Statistics: Maltese children are the most obese in the world. Maltese men are the second shortest in Europe. Maltese women are the shortest in Europe. But wait… The Maltese people are one of the happiest in the world.

score on who has done the most favours •

RETURN things you have borrowed or used from each other

BE AWARE of others’ feelings – think before you speak. (Sometimes it’s a good idea to

PRAISE your friends when they do something well.

SHARE the conversation, so that you each get a chance to be listeners and talkers

On the contrary in Malta we hardly see anyone power walking, and if we do, we might get to think that there is something wrong with that person!

keep your thoughts to yourself rather than upset people’s feelings). •

HANDLE CONFLICT – by being clear about what you want and how you will compromise

SHARE your time with other friends

BE HONEST about your feelings, eg. “I don’t think it’s a good idea

because…..” Don’t always try to be the leader – try out other people’s ideas too •

TRY TO understand people by thinking about things from their point of view

DON”T ARGUE and get upset if your friend doesn’t agree with you about something. She or he has the right to an opinion .

Friendship is like a seed that you have found. If you nurture it well it might flourish into a beautiful plant. Page 11

TO SAN ANDREA WITH LOVE …. I’ve been at San Andrea School since grade 2 and it has become my second home. I would like to say thanks to my friends and teachers who have always helped me whenever I needed anything. Although it will be difficult leaving the school which I grew up in and not seeing the same faces every morning, life goes on and changes happen whether I like it or not! I will miss the assemblies, crosscountries, walkathons, sports-days, Issue 3

music speech poetry and drama evenings, tournaments, colourblobs and all the laughs we have in class! I wish everybody the best of luck for the future. To my friends, you know you will always have a special place in my heart and I’ll never forget you. Lent 2006 Lent is more than just making sacrifices and listening to talks. During the Lenten season there is always the opportunity to stop and reflect on the meaning of one’s life. This is exactly the reason why all the students, from Grade 9 to Grade 12, are given the opportunity to participate in Lenten talks. Grade 8 and 9. Grade 8 and 9 students were led by Fr Jimmy and Ms. Nicky this year. The time spent together was split into various activities. Audio and visual aids were used and guest speakers were invited over to give a personal testimony and speak about the difference Jesus made in their lives. Becky Vella Muskat from Acts and Robert Galea, a seminarian shared their experiences and Robert also wrote a song for the students to encourage them to pray. The students were allowed to ask questions and discuss any queries they may have. The sessions were concluded with a short time of prayer and reflection. Grade 10. Fr. Alex Cordina was one of the two guest

Ms Nicky Azzopardi and Mr Chris Mallia

speakers invited over for our Grade 10 students. Fr. Alex is the spiritual director of the youth community at San Blas, Zebbug. This centre specializes in helping young men and women fight drug addiction and reintegrate themselves in society. This community houses between 25 and 30 youth and Fr. Alex has been living with them for the past 15 years. In order to strengthen his talk with first hand experience, Fr. Alex invited one of the exmembers of the community to narrate his own experience regarding drugs. The speaker narrated how his life was negatively affected through drug abuse and how he managed to fight the problem with the help of the San Blas community and Jesus Christ in his life. The Lenten Talks were concluded with a Eucharistic adoration. During this moment of adoration students had the opportunity to go for Confession or have a personal chat with Fr. Jimmy the school spiritual director or Fr. Alex. These are some of the thoughts shared by the students afterwards: “The thing that touched me most is that he told us his story even though we were strangers to him. He helped us not to make the same mistake he did.”

“I was very impressed at the way he managed to find God again in his life with the help of Fr. Alex. I hope I will not take up drugs or drinking in future.” “My impression of yesterday’s talk was that it came from the heart and the people who were speaking really did want us to learn from their mistakes. The speaker did this so that we do not repeat his mistakes and learn from them and be exposed to what temptation is and how to deal with it during this time of reflection.” Grade 11 and 12. For Grade 11 and 12 students, ACTS were invited to spend a whole morning with the students. ACTS stands for ‘announcing Christ through schools’ and it is composed of 23 youths who took time-out from work or University to dedicate a year to Christ through their evangelization in schools. Through their songs, music, audio and visual aids, mime and personal experiences they succeeded in winning over the Grade 11 and 12 students. It was the right mix and a very positive experience for our students who felt comfortable listening and speaking to these youths who had so much to share.

SELF-DIRECTION Great minds have purposes, Others have wishes. (Washington Irving) Dear students, Exams are just DIRECTIONS round the corner! All of you will be undertaking these upcoming exams. I trust that all o f you want to win, all of you w a n t to succeed. In view of this, I would like to share with you some essential tips. If you want to succeed, you need to develop an important trait, which is self-direction. Self-direction is setting Page 20

a well-defined goal and working toward it. Thus, you direct all your efforts to achieving satisfactory marks. This inner commitment makes achievement happen. How do you go about it? 1.

2.

You need to set daily goals. Make a study plan. List on paper tasks that need to be done. Check off tasks as you accomplish them. Carry over to the following day’s plan the tasks not completed and add new ones. Remember that you are behind the helm. Plan your work and do it. As the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Be focused on what you want to achieve.

3.

Time. You can waste it or use it! Time management is an important part of reaching your goals.

4.

Desire to achieve good marks. You need to take responsibility for your desire and own it. You must want the reward in order to be motivated to study hard.

5.

Eat well. Rest well. Make healthy choices. Take care of yourself physically. Your body needs good food and adequate rest. When you take good care of yourself, it is easier for you to deal with this stressful period.

I believe you can do it. I wish you well.

For the teachers, chocolate is good for you (a scientifically proven fact) and remember, you never step in the same river twice, which means every second you waste will never come back. U2 – Bono: Rocker, Activist, Christian The fact that U2 is the biggest rock band in the world is not nearly debated as much as the faith of the band itself. Hailing from Dublin in the early eighties with celebratory anthems of faith, they were a band the Christian world immediately embraced. But over time, the band experienced a wider world and broadened their vision both musically and lyrically. A quarter century ago, any rock ' n' roller using the G-word was courting either commercial suicide or a one-way ticket to the Christian-rock ghetto. During that post-punk era, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison were still singing about spiritualIssue 3

ity, but nobody hip was listening. When the now-rechristened U2 announced its presence with the insistent guitar phrase that ushered in "I Will Follow" -- the opening track on its first album, the group was laying the groundwork for a very non-rock challenge: love me, love my God. If you look at their album and ticket sales, you might argue that the fans accepted those terms. Bono finishes rock concerts by asking God to ' take this heart and make it break.'It' s an upside-down look at rock music. Some may say that the 1987 hit "I Still Haven' t Found What I' m Looking For" shows that the groups’ faith is weak. But if you listen to that song at all you may see otherwise – “You broke the bonds and you loosed the chains / Carried the cross of my shame / You know I believe it” -there' s really nothing there that' s ambiguous. This is the theology of the

passion and the atonement of Christ at No. 1 on the U.S. charts for four weeks! In a Rolling Stone interview Bono once said "I don' t use the label (Christian), because it is so very hard to live up to. I feel like I' m the worst example of it, so I just kinda keep my mouth shut." However Bono didn’t keep his mouth shut when it came to helping the less fortunate. He was heavily involved in the Jubilee 2000 campaign which was an international coalition movement in over 40 countries calling for cancellation of unpayable third world debt by the year 2000. His work was recognised by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan who praised his efforts to cancel Third World debt. Mr Annan said “Bono as an artist, activist, and advocate for the poor, you have made a real difference, crossed boundaries and broken taboos.” Page 21

THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING PSHE Project (May 2006) ~ Ryan Camilleri TAR Cigarettes contain tar. This can cause cancer. Tar is a sticky brown substance which collects in the lungs of smokers. It stains the fingers, teeth and tongue as well. It coats everything it touches, especially the body’s air passages. NICOTINE Nicotine is another chemical we find in cigarettes. Nicotine takes only 7 seconds to reach the brain; it can change your moods. It affects blood pressure and nerves – often making people feel dizzy. It is a colorless very poisonous chemical which affects the heart, blood vessels, and nervous system. Nicotine is an addictive substance. This means that people who start to smoke cigarettes can find it very difficult to stop. Many people do manage to stop smoking – there are about 11 million exex-smokers in Britain. CARBON MONOXIDE The third chemical we find in cigarettes is carbon monoxide. This is a deadly gas which has no smell. You cannot smoke without getting it into your blood. The more Carbon Monoxide in the blood, the less room there is for oxygen which the body needs to stay alive & well. In regular smokers, carbon monoxide interferes with the working of their hearts & blood vessels. This gas is found in car exhaust fumes. fumes. Many cars are now fitted with a device to get rid of carbon monoxide. This helps to ensure that the air is not polluted. Someone who smokes a cigarette is fitting him/herself with a device which ensures that his/her body is being polluted ! Does this make any sense ?! PASSIVE SMOKING When people breathe in smoke from other people’s cigarettes this is called “Passive Smoking”. Smoking”. Passive smoking can make people cough, cause their eyes to burn & sting, make their clothes and hair smell. Children who have to spend time around

Issue 3

grownups who smoke get more chest illnesses than those who breathe clean air. Breathing in adults’ cigarette smoke can also give children headaches and ear infections. Lung cancer can be the result for those adults who have been exposed to the pollution of cigarette smoke for most of their lives. It is thought that there may be several hundred deaths a year of nonnonsmokers from lung cancer due to passive smoking.

Healthy Lung

Damaged Lung

Smoking can reduce your appetite – but because of all the damage it does it can never be a good way to control weight. A better way to control weight is to take care about what you eat and to take regular exercise. People who continue to smoke as they grow older are putting their health at serious risk. They can develop lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis, damaged lungs, problems with breathing, damaged blood vessels which can The Heart make it necessary to amputate limbs. In addition smoking causes or contributes to: - cancers of the lip, throat, bladder and other cancers – cancer of the neck of the womb.

WHAT DOES SMOKING DO TO YOUR BODY? Lung cancer causes the cells in the lung to divide very quickly. When this happens the tissue can grow big enough to block a main branch of a bronchus, stop the air flowing properly and cause bleeding from a blood vessel. It can lead to cancer in other parts of the body. It is very difficult to cure. 9/10 people with lung cancer are dead within 5 years of the disease being discovered. Young people who smoke even a few cigarettes a week are more likely to suffer from coughs, chest illness and shortness of breath. The smoke from just one cigarette has an effect on your lungs – it makes it more difficult for them to work properly. Smoking also effects people’s sense of taste and smell. Perhaps it’s just as well that they cannot smell themselves properly – their breath, clothes and hair often stink from tobacco smoke! Even young people can become addicted to the nicotine very easily. Giving up requires willpower.

A LOOK AT THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY. Tobacco companies spend over £110 million each year on advertising. They try to convince you that smoking can give you style friends and confidence. One method they use is to show smokers as intelligent, sporty and attractive people. Is this the whole truth? Cigarette advertising is allowed in newspapers, magazines and on poster sites but not allowed in cinemas on the radio or television. Posters are not supposed to be on display near schools or children’s playplay-grounds. !

Sports Day 2006 Mr Kevin Mamo (Sports Co-ordinator) For the fourth time, the San Andrea Sports Day was held here at our school, now that we can make use of our excellent facilities. Sports Day in senior school has been divided into two sections: The first for students of grade 10, 11 and 12 and another for grade 8 and 9 students. This is to ensure that each student can participate in at least four events.

Sports Day was a memorable day for all the children whether they were successful or not. What was important is that the students participated and gave their utmost. By doing so, they should be proud of themselves. Participation in sport develops a strong character, a sense of loyalty, concern for social contribution, and a sense of individual achievement and success.

The pupils have actually chosen the events they wanted to take part in. Each and every child was involved in a maximum of four events, two field and two track events. The field events included the shot put, the long jump and for the first time the high jump, whilst the track events included the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and for the first time the 50m hurdle race.

This year’s Sports Day was won by the House of Provence for the fourth consecutive time having won the track events cup and the overall Sports Day Mamo Cup. House of Castile won the Field event cup and finished as runners up this year. Below are all the present records till 2006.

GOSSIP … Celebrity Babies! BABY SEAN FALLS & FRACTURES HIS SKULL, BRITNEY IN TEARS! On April 7, when Britney Spears and Kevin Federline realized that their baby, Sean Preston, had been sleeping more than usual, panic bells went off. Just six days earlier on 1st April, the 7-month-old had taken a major fall from his high chair, a tumble that had his parents worried that he might have been critically injured. They had every right to fret. After rushing Sean to a nearby hospital, they discovered he had a minor skull fracture (sometimes called a "scalp fracture" in babies), and a blood clot. And the doctors weren' t the only ones to take notice! This incident happened while baby Sean was eating only to fall from his high-chair, banging his head hard on the floor. It was reported that the nanny was in the room at this time and the whereabouts of Kevin and Britney are unknown. The next day, the Department of Children and Family Services began looking into the incident. On April 8, L.A. sheriff' s deputies arrived at Britney' s Malibu home to investigate a child-abuse claim against Britney and Kevin in relation to the head injury. Such an investigation isn' t unusual. According to California law, whenever a baby is brought into the hospital with a serious injury, the Department of Children and Family Services is alerted but no charges were pressed on Britney and Kevin. Issue 3

Paula Gauci and Fabrizia Cassar TomKat welcome baby girl! Actress Katie Holmes (27) gave birth on Tuesday (April 18) to hers and fiance Tom Cruise' s (43) first biological child. Although it is the first biological child for Tom Cruise he already has two adopted children from his first marriage with Nicole Kidman. The child weighed seven pounds, seven ounces and was 20 inches in length. The couple had a baby girl who they called Suri. The n a m e Suri is a n a m e with Hebrew and Persian origins meaning ' princess'in Hebrew and ' red rose'in Persian. In Japanese however, the name Suri has a less flattering meaning, it means ‘pickpocket.'Although the press and the world were waiting eagerly for the arrival of the new baby the couple were able to leave their house in Beverly Hills to get to the hospital, and come back home without anyone knowing, Details about the birth weren' t disclosed, but it had been planned to take place as a silent procedure under the tenants of the Church of Scientology, to which both Cruise and Holmes belong. Scientologists believe words spoken during times of pain are recorded by the "reactive mind" and can cause potential problems for both mother and child. —————————————

says she must, as she believes these types of shows “wear out their welcome”. The star says she has her sites set firmly on Hollywood and wants to concentrate on making movies rather than sticking to the American series for all her life. However, she is not the only star who seems to be quitting a series. Mischa Barton, who plays Marissa Cooper on the series The O.C is also rumoured to be leaving the set! Furious Angelina! Angelina Jolie has reportedly lashed out at Jennifer Aniston and her remarks on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Angelina is furious about how Oprah, a famous American talk-show host, and almost everybody else feels sorry for Jennifer Aniston after her divorce from husband, Brad Pitt. The Tomb Raider star says she feels sick about the way the audience took in every word Jennifer was saying and is even angrier about how all the Hollywood stars seem to be on her side, even Brad’s mother! Maybe she should have thought of that before she helped to break up the happily married couple!

Eva Longoria says, “No More!” Eva Longoria, who plays Gabrielle Solis on the hit American TV series Desperate Housewives, says she won’t film more than her contract Page 27

Funday with a Humanitarian objective Sunday 9th April was a special day at San Andrea Senior School. In October 2005 Mr.Johann from Early School came up with the idea of organising a Fun Day at school to raise funds for the children of the crèche at St.Rita Home in Tarxien. The idea was shared with Ms. Audrey, head of senior school who gave her full support in bringing the idea to fruition. The day was set and Mr.Mark from Senior school took the initiative of co-ordinating the event. Mr.Johann organised the outside games whilst Mr.Mark took care of the various stalls in the canteen and the car wash which was held in the car park. In the afternoon, a parent offered his services as a hairdresser and was kept busy till the end.

The car wash was taken care of by the House Masters. A number of students came to school according to a time table. A early school parent also helped out with this event.

The beauty of such an experience is that it brought a large number of teachers from early, middle and senior schools together w h o gave up a Sunday to give a helping hand in making such an event a guaranteed success. The sum of Lm1,060 was raised and presented to the home. I would like to thank all those teachers,

Mr Peter Pace O’Shea parents and students who worked hard and contributed to make this new project a successful one. I would also like to thank all the parents and teachers of San Andrea and our sponsors who were so generous with the children at St Rita Home. Our sponsors were: Chain Supermarket, Carter Supermarket, Ta’ Natu Supermarket, Copyquick, C&S Ltd., Zammit Trading Ltd., A. Abela AutoXS, Mezzan Confectionary, PJ Sutters, Farsons, Golden Harvest, Sparkle Image, Global Capital Insurance Ltd. and Flower Power. Sometimes it’s a good thing to stop, listen and open our hearts to the needs of those close to us who are silently suffering. Many children at St.Rita Home will benefit and plans are already underway to hold this event next year. This event is now part of the San Andrea Humanitarian Experience, Our Children Too. Our school humanitarian experience follows in the footsteps of Our Lord Jesus Christ when he said ‘ whatever you do the least one of you, you do it to me.’

I would like to thank all the students and teachers who have worked hard on this issue. Whoever wants to join in the action is welcome! I’d like to encourage you to participate in the competitions. May I remind you that there are wonderful prizes to be won for our competitions. The title of the next one is: “Fifa World Cup: Germany 2006”. Send pictures, poems, essays and interesting information at [email protected]. Unfortunately none of the Old San Andreans who promised me an article met the deadline; I hope to include articles of our old students in the next issues. I promise to include all those articles which have not been published yet in the coming issues. Thank you for reading us and hope you enjoy it! The Editor
