What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Current Status –

“To Be” •

What do you need in order to double the amount of organics collected by January 2015? – – – –

Expand collection program via partnerships with existing haulers Separate foodwaste from greenwaste at curbside source Better SSO quality – less contamination Packaging that can be handled and processed by AD system

What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Needs –

In order to significantly increase foodwaste diversion and beneficial use (compost, renewable natural gas), drilling into the waste stream to provide more efficient and “doable” source separation is needed. Regarding composting, we need compostable cutlery that will compost effectively.

“IWIK”I Wish I Knew •

IWIK how to get haulers to provide this service for us instead of us having to be a collector. IWIK how to get generators to do a better job of keeping non-compostable products out of stream IWIK how to level the playing field regarding compost production and marketing related to permitting, finished product certification, etc.

Anything Else You Want to Say About Barriers to Success –

“As Is” •

Current Status –

– – –

Boulder County’s current diversion rate of 35% includes both recycling and compost. A 2010 analysis indicated that more than 90,000 tons of compostable material are going to disposal from the county each year. Current regulations require compost collection service be available to residential customers in much of the unincorporated area. Boulder County reaches out to back yard composters with classes and bin sales each year Boulder County strives to buy locally manufactured finished compost for use on county property. No statistics are easily available to document the amount of compost so purchased. The County is seeking to improve compost drop-off opportunities in rural areas.

What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Current Status –

Compost will play a key role as Boulder County seeks to achieve “Zero Waste or darn near” by 2020

“To Be” •

What do you need in order to double the amount of organics collected by January 2015? – – – –

We need adequate local compost processing capacity We need strong markets for finished compost We need more households composting in their back yards and a way to measure that diversion We need better participation in / subscription to existing residential and commercial compost collection services

What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Needs –

Composting of yard debris differs from composting of food scraps and compostable plastics / food service ware. We need clear, friendly messaging to help our residents see composing as convenient, rather than challenging.

“IWIK”I Wish I Knew •

Discuss your barriers to success in the format, I Wish I Knew….. – – – –

IWIK where our programs are having the most success and how to transfer that success to other areas IWIK how to prevent wildlife from rummaging in organics bins IWIK how to clearly message what can be composted and what cannot IWIK how to keep local residents from contaminating compost collection containers

Anything Else You Want to Say About Barriers to Success –

The addition of compostable plastics to organics streams complicates messaging far beyond the old basics of “compost your food scraps and yard debris.” This brave new world might be more than our residents can comprehend.

(’09-’12) – Single game-high diversion rate of 88% (Oregon, 2011) • All campus game day tailgate lots have recycling for cans & bottles. – Fans helped to recycle over 48% of the waste generated by the Franklin Field tailgate • Folsom Field participated in the USEPA’s National Game Day Challenge in 2011 (Oregon game, 10/22/11), taking 1st place in 2 (of the 5) categories in the NCAA Div I-FBS division. What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Current Status – – –

On-going global R&D initiatives to increase product offerings and product performance – including strengthening liners and increasing heat tolerance for cutlery. Looking into manufacturing Natur-Ware cutlery in USA “Raise the Awareness Bar” - on-going efforts to “add to” and improve stakeholder and client educational tools to increase participation in organic collection programs and zero-waste initiatives

“To Be” •

What do you need in order to double the amount of organics collected by January 2015? –

– –

More in depth engagement and collaboration with area policy makers, haulers, and processors to ensure needs and concerns are addressed allowing for more effective communication to local distribution partners and other market stakeholders. Develop optimized and cost effective offerings and solutions based on local and regional inputs and considerations (bins being used, pick up rates, regulations, etc.). More participation and added support of local zero-waste initiatives (for example, Sustainable Game Days at University of Colorado)

What Else Do You Want to Say About Your Needs – – –

Increase retail presence in local retailers (grocery, hardware, etc.) Product supply and availability will not be an issue for double market demand as a result of 2 x organic collection and land fill diversion. Drive Participation in Recycling and Organic Collection Programs (“Put it in Perspective”) • • • • • •

Energy usage - cars represent 15-20%, of our energy usage, house heating and cooling represents 20-25% Landfill considerations – 80-85% of what is in a landfill can be diverted to recycling and compost streams. Landfills are mankind's largest producers of methane (CH4) gas which is 23 times MORE dangerous as a GHG than carbon dioxide (CO2) Capital and operational costs - Prius cost $20k, FasTracks $4.3k / HH, Energy efficient HAVOC $10k /HH, organic collection program is between $0-$500/HH and costs an average of $2-3 /HH/week to operate Value in recycling – requires up to 75% LESS energy than using virgin materials Value in hummus – nutrient rich hummus reduces the need of water and fertilizer usage representing 1/3 to 2/3 of energy used in agriculture. Implementation considerations – Every Other Week collection (EOW) to help drive residential participation •

Special Thanks to Rod Muir from Sur-Close for above information
