Safety Tips Use the stairs. NEVER use an elevator. Even if it appears to be working, it could shut down at any time with you inside. Know two ways out of your building.

Fire Prevention Safety 1. Do not smoke or burn candles or incense in your room. 2. Do not use halogen bulbs or lamps. 3. Do not leave cooking unattended. (Cook only in designated areas.)

Test doorknobs and spaces around the door with your hand. If the door is warm, try another escape route. If it is cool, open it slowly. Slam it shut if smoke comes in.

4. Do not cover or disable smoke detectors.

If you have a guest staying with you, familiarize him/her with escape routes and assembly points. Remember, you are responsible for your guest’s safety.

6. Do not block or hang anything from sprinkler heads and pipes.

If you know someone needs help evacuating and, if you are able, help him/her to a stairwell and notify the Fire Department that a person needs help immediately. False alarms are dangerous and illegal. Tell an Officer or your RA anyone you know who is responsible for reporting a false alarm.

First, pull the Fire Alarm! ??? Are you trained on how to use a

fire extinguisher and know what it can be used for? ??? Is the fire small or just starting? ??? Can you fight it safely without

endangering yourself or others?

NO?

THEN GET OUT!!!

Did you know that…? Fire can engulf a room within 3 minutes if the windows or doors are open.

Evacuation

ALWAYS evacuate when you hear a fire alarm. GRAB your room keys. (If the exits are blocked you may need to go back to your room.) WEAR shoes and grab a coat or blanket. CLOSE your room door. ALERT others by banging on doors as you leave. GO to nearest exit. CRAWL on floor if you encounter smoke or heat. GO to nearest “blue light” and check in with RA/RD. (Do not leave the area unless told to do so.) ADVISE the RA/RD if you think someone is missing or needs help. DO NOT re-enter building until instructed to do so.

Helpful tips to remember when calling Campus Safety or 9-911

Keuka College conducts timed and unannounced fire drills each semester. Planning ahead can save precious time and, in a real emergency lives.  Know the location of the nearest fire alarm pull station.  Know the nearest exit to your room and other exits for the building.  Know your designated assembly point outside the building.  Check with your RA or Campus Safety if you do not have this information.

What if I get trapped or have to return to my room? If you cannot exit your room or all escape routes are blocked along the way, return to your room, if able; otherwise enter the next closest room. • Dial 9-911 and tell them what room you are in. • Seal the door with towels or clothing.

• Remain calm and explain exactly what the problem is.

• Open windows slightly at top and bottom. (Close if smoke comes in.)

• Give your name and exact location.

• Wave or hang a towel or sheet out the window for attention. (Clear a path to prepare for exiting out the window.)  Consider exiting via a first floor window if it is safe to do so.

• Provide a callback number. • If necessary, stay on phone until help arrives.

Be Prepared
