TJACE Program FAQ
Why are the classes called Core College and Career Readiness Skills (CCR)? CCR classes are designed to help students reach academic and career goals. Whether the next step is college or work, students learn the tools needed to be successful. In addition to academic skills-‐reading, writing and math, classes integrate digital literacy and valuable workplace skills including problem-‐solving, teamwork, and effective communication.
My English is not great. Can I take these classes? It depends. You would need to take an assessment. If the assessment indicates a 5th grade reading level or higher, you can enroll in a class. If your reading score is lower, you would be referred to an ESL class. ESL Classes are located in Charlottesville, Albemarle, and Greene counties. Once you improving your reading, you would be able to enter an academic class. A transition class at the Adult Learning Center is designed to support students who are transitioning from ESL to academic classes.
What if I already have a GED® or high school diploma? CCR Classes are available to anyone who scores less than a 12th grade reading or math level on the assessment regardless of their prior years of schooling (i.e., high school graduate). Most students enter in the 5-‐8th grade academic range for reading and math. Referrals are made to volunteer literacy organizations when additional reading or math support is needed.
Where can I study for the GED® test? All CCR classes will continue to help students prepare for the GED® high school equivalency test. But, in addition, students will be prepared to succeed in college placement and/or a career path.
How do I register for the GED® Test? Go to www.ged.com to sign up for MyGED®. Click on Schedule Test. Once you complete scheduling questions, you will be directed to choose your language (Spanish or English), subject, and the day and time to test. You can schedule one test at a time to make sure you are prepared every time. If you do not have Internet access, call 1-‐877-‐392-‐6433. TJACE can help adults take a practice test to see if they are ready.
Where can I take the GED® test? Local Pearson-‐Vue GED® Testing Centers are the Adult Learning Center, Charlottesville and Louisa Alternative Education Center. Other locations include Fishersville, and Amherst.
Is there another path to get a high school credential? Looking for an alternative route to earn a high school diploma? The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) could be the answer. This web-‐based program for adults offers flexibility to earn a high school diploma even if employed full time. Work at home, the library or wherever you have a computer. Use the skills you’ve gained from life and work experience to demonstrate reading, writing and math high school level skills. Testing is by appointment. Contact Carol P: 434-‐245-‐2823, email:
