RECRUITMENT BOOK 2017

COMMON CONCERNS A FRATERNITY HAS NOTHING TO OFFER ME The benefits of being in a Fraternity are a direct result of what you put into it. There are no other opportunities available to college men that offer the breadth and depth of real-life learning and leadership than that of the Fraternity experience. As you will see, if you continue on, the majority of us in Delta Sig did not want to join a fraternity when we came to college. This trait and many others have shaped the culture of our brotherhood in awesome ways, and we are interested in anyone who wants to become a better man by being a part of it.

BEING HAZED Delta Sig has zero tolerance for hazing. Anyone who hazes, or allows himself to be hazed, is not worthy of being a Delta Sig. Our mission to be a true fraternity of gentlemen starts with our commitment to create and foster respect through constructive means.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS Most Greek houses are cheaper than living on campus even after all fees are paid on top of room and board. Room and board in our new house has been priced competitively with Residential Life (page 5).

OPPOSED PARENTS Prior to finding Delta Sig, many of us, as well as our parents, were anti-fraternity. What changed our minds were the people, and what changed our parents’ minds was the visible impact this commitment made in our lives.

DECREASED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE The Chapter has minimum standards for maintaining membership, an Academic Excellence Program, and a program to reward scholastic achievement. We consistently rank among the top organizations in cumulative GPA, so don’t expect your academics to suffer.

BEING TOO OLD We believe there is always room for improvement in a man's life regardless of age. In fact, a majority of our Chapter's founding fathers were upperclassmen and we actively recruit new members who are nonfreshmen.

ASSOCIATION WITH NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES We do not want to be associated with negative fraternity stereotypes either. Delta Sig strives to distance itself from the negative reputations of Frats.

BEING TOO BUSY You would be expected to allocate a few hours a week to the Fraternity as an active member, but many of us enjoy spending more time than that trying to better Delta Sig. As a new member undergoing pledgeship, your time commitment is a bit higher, but it is still manageable with a normal class load and other commitments (organizations, friends, etc.). See page 4 for a complete breakdown.

LOSING TOUCH WITH FRIENDS We encourage our brothers to have relationships both inside and outside of the Fraternity; this is, after all, a social organization. Still, being a part of Delta Sig does not just provide you with more friends. It offers you lifelong bonds of brotherhood secured by harmony, culture, and friendship.

THE JOURNEY WHAT WE LOOK FOR

We recruit based on values and how well those values are exhibited. We have to have a reason to extend a bid card, as opposed to the absence of a reason not to. Those we invite to join are believed to strongly exhibit many of the following:  Academic success  Leadership potential  Respect for others  Initiative  Involvement  Genuine desire to serve others

THE BID CARD

A bid card is an invitation to take up pledgeship in Delta Sigma Phi, where the completion of mentioned pledgeship results in lifetime membership. When we extend a bid card to a potential new member, it is because the Chapter feels that they exhibit qualities becoming of a Delta Sig. If you have interest and want to join, you must get to know us as we get to know you since a lifelong decision should never be rushed. We strive to be genuine when meeting new people and we ask that you do the same. Ultimately, both our decision to extend a bid and your decision to sign it will be far easier and educated. Should you receive and sign a bid card, it must be returned to Delta Sig by the specified due date. All official documents and fees must also be returned prior to the Pinning Ceremony. If the bid card expires before you are ready to sign, then contact the Director of Recruitment.

PINNING CEREMONY

NEW MEMBER EDUCATION

Once you return your signed bid card, a spot is reserved for you in our Pinning Ceremony. This ceremony is a formal gathering that marks the beginning of pledgeship with Delta Sigma Phi. See page 3.

INITIATION

Initiation is the ceremony that makes you a full member of Delta Sigma Phi. It occurs after 8 weeks of new member education have passed.

MEMBERSHIP

Once initiated, you begin another journey that lasts for the rest of your life. It is a constant endeavor to improve the condition of not just your life, but of the world. Changing the world starts with being a better man. Then, by banding with men of the same mindset, you are empowered to achieve bigger and better things that will serve to make the world a better place.

NEW MEMBER EDUCATION The purpose of the New Member Education process of Delta Sigma Phi is to prepare potential new members for membership. This is accomplished in eight weeks where potential new members are educated on the fraternity’s history, values, and vision. One of the most common concerns we hear from potential new members is in regards to how much time they will be committing, so we have put together this table to break it down. This list is subject to slight change based on new member class size and time constraints. Commitment

Move-In Process

If a bed is available, you have the opportunity to move into the house, an honor others may not get. Exceptions to living out of the house your pledge semester or any semester following do occur under very special circumstances. The following steps must be completed in order before you can move in: 1. Turn in your bid card. Assuming a spot is open, we will then provide you with a lease. 2. Return the lease signed (along with a check covering the Deposit - $500) so that you may begin working with the House Manager to find a room and move your stuff in. If you are moving in from a ResHall: 3. We will contact ResLife and GreekLife to inform them of your intent to move in at which point they will email you to confirm. You may move your stuff in once Step 2 is completed but it is extremely important that you check out with ResLife as quickly as possible (after they contact you) so that you are not pro-rated more than necessary. Every day you wait to check out is a day for which you are charged. 4. S&T will issue you a refund for the money you were using to pay for housing with ResLife. We recommend setting up Direct Deposit through Joe’SS or the Cashier’s Office, otherwise the school mails a check to your home address. You will then use this money to pay for Room, Board, and other fees. Please note that all members will eventually receive an invitation to move out to other housing as more members join.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A BETTER MAN? A couple years ago, I was standing right where you are – traversing the newness of college life, and discerning exactly how I would spend my time at Missouri S&T. “Fraternities are loud. Fraternities are distracted. I’d never join one of those.” Upon exposure to college fraternities, these thoughts often crowded my mind. I felt constricted by the way fraternities tried to sell me their organizations; they talked about their accomplishments, showed off their houses, and seemed uninterested in who I was as a person. This, coupled with the negative stereotypes I had seen in the media, created a strong distaste in my mouth for all things “fraternity.” This changed one day, when I encountered a group of men wearing Delta Sigma Phi’s letters. These gentlemen were at a campus event, supporting the brothers that were participating. On the outside, they seemed like normal fraternity men, but the way they carried themselves seemed incredibly different. These men were caring, competent, and vibrant. They were experiencing life, but doing it in a way that drew me to them rather than turning me away. Long story short, I would eventually go on to join this incredible group. During my time with Delta Sig, I’ve been impacted most by that innate feeling of being “different.” These men do a fantastic job of pushing the status quo, asking the big questions, and being intentional about their actions. My brothers have walked alongside me, challenged me, and led me to a true happiness that I don’t think I could have received anywhere else. I don’t tell you this to garnish your attention, but to open you up to a group of people that have truly changed my life. If a powerful, life-changing brotherhood is something that piques your interest, look no further than Delta Sigma Phi – men who are truly redefining the fraternity experience.
