Reading Trainings

 Course: Foundational Reading Skills Grades k-3 Dates: July 26 & 27 and Oct. 11 Time: 8:00-5:00 p.m. (central time) Location: Ft. Pierre, Drifters Event Center

Audience: k-3 educators, reading specialists, instructional coaches, para-educators, special education, title, and elementary administrators. 3 Day Training Focus The Foundational Reading skills training will focus on the five main literacy skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. The training will include both a research-informed knowledge base and practical sample lesson models. The training skills and materials can be used for implementation into teaching practices during the school year. The first two days of training will be held in the summer to introduce the big 5 skills with a third day of training during the fall. The third date allows teachers to share with their colleagues how the implementation of the big 5 worked with their students and to model activities/lessons created. 2 Day Training Focus: This training will focus on foundational reading skills known as the big 5 (fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, phonics). These literacy skills are needed to help struggling readers at the upper elementary and middle school levels. The training will include both a research-informed knowledge base and practical sample lesson models. The training skills and materials can be used for implementation into teaching practices during the school year. This training will incorporate reading skills along with other literacy skills in the area of critical thinking and writing. These skills all connect to fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension needed for success at the upper levels. There will be texts referenced in this training; however they will not be required.
